      @akaKjell Plus Bruce realises how Shitzen American trucks are & how backwards in design they are. Mainly because Americans are Americans but they (the Americans, can't see that, not for all the wood in the trees...) that's why Bruce is lost for words in the video on the test track sessions - he knows that the Scania's are "light years" ahead in technology & drive quality - the silence confirms it - it's his mind thinking it, you can read the gesticulation.....

    Bruce, as an American living in Australia and one that used to drive trucks in the states to driving euro trucks in Australia i can tell you the scania, vovlo and mercedes trucks are so comfortable to drive verses the kenworth, western star and cat trucks. A far superior handling and ride quality.

      well, like most European transportation that was and is being built, first of all, it is the comfort, the quality, and milage, then come performance, even with the cheap ones, as on the other side the American-built machines are concerned on power, and some useless specs, I haven`t met any European driver that knows what transmission manufacturer his car has...
      and also having huge competition (compared to the almost non-existent one in the USA) on the market has its benefits... we have more Luxury car Brands than the USA has car manufacturers...

    13:00 When I was hauling tank containers in the Gothenburg harbor we had slightly longer wheelbase trailers (same overall length, just shorter overhang). This so we could load more, so instead of the regular 44 tons for a regular semi truck and semi trailer, we had a max gross weight of 50 tons. So, to make it slightly more maneuverable and to reduce tyre wear, the 3rd trailer axle would turn when going forward, but straighten out and lock when reversing. Not bad for a truck that's 18 years old and a trailer that's 12 years old.

  • @Tom-Lahaye
    @Tom-Lahaye 11 месяцев назад +25

    Amber did well driving the trucks, she kept a nice steady pace.
    The gas engine is designed to run on LNG. Gasoline is called Petrol in UK English. And if you ever going to drive a car in France, Spain or Italy, don't fill up with Gazole, Gasoléo or Gasolio, this is not gasoline but diesel!
    All the merch in the dealership just shows how Scania is a lifestyle amongst truckers.
    And the old Scania L75 is a true classic, I remember these when I was a lot younger, you would still see these until the mid 1980s.
    It's a bit surprising that you don't see that many knuckle booms in the US, they are so useful on trucks delivering building supplies or prefabricated building parts, machinery or shipping containers without having to depend on crane hire. They do cost load capacity but often that isn't a big problem in these applications.

    There are definitely trailers with steerable axles in the U.S. especially in the heavy haul market. There are several versions in the way they operate. I’ve pulled a few different types. Mostly those with remote controls giving the driver a bunch of options.

      @P-J-W-777 you have automatic braking, electric trucks, engine braking and energy recovery? Wow anyone would think American trucks are just as good as those in Europe.

    • @P-J-W-777
      @P-J-W-777 26 дней назад

      @ Automatic braking? No unless the newer trucks have it. (Glad we don’t/didn’t just another piece of equipment to break) We have trucks with engine and exhaust braking! We even have electric trucks as useless as they are. Even a few hydrogen a bunch of LP (junk). Our trucks are are built to last (or should I say use to be built) a very long time and be extremely easy to work on with as little complication as possible. But we do have ABS as it’s federally mandated. Our trucks run long distances non stop at fairly high speeds. They work for needs and have worked perfectly fine for decades. You want really nice seats with massage and heat? We have them aftermarket! You want a high quality mattress? We have them aftermarket! LOL! We even have trucks with air ride on every axle and several under the cab and sleeper.

      @ yeah, only we call it a keyed electric ignition system. Do you believe that a truck needs to become more computers and sensors than an actual truck? So much so that they’ve become so complicated and expensive that many mechanics don’t want to work on them and most drivers can’t afford them? When is enough actually enough?

    There is nothing that sounds as good as a Scania V8 under load. We have Scania's here in New Zealand, in both truck and bus. I drove buses and the Scania is the nicest to drive with a 'steer' tag axle at the rear, made sharp corners a breeze to get around. They also had the same retarder as the truck that is a 6 stage, and it was brilliant going down hills.

    28:40 Bruce! As an american you can get the VAT/Sales tax refunded at the airport when you take things with you back home. The sales tax is 25% so that means you get 20% of the purchase price back. High end retailers will be used to this, but probably not the Scania gift shop. You need to get a VAT refund form with the purchase and you go to customs with it at the airport.

  • @PropperNaughtyGeezer
    @PropperNaughtyGeezer 11 месяцев назад +37

    Nice video. Driving an unfamiliar vehicle, loaded, in this weather can make you nervous.
    The gear reduction (AP-Achse) is not to get more torque, it serves to keep the upstream components smaller because they have to transmit less torque because it is reinforced at the wheel hub. The differential of the smooth-running axles is definitely twice as large, gets warm and reduces the ground clearance. The cardan shafts are also much stronger and heavier. With the AP axes everything is much thinner and lighter. On the other hand, consumption is higher with an AP axis and they are louder.
    However, the drive shafts of both tend to shear off. We have already shredded quite a few, especially with the MAN 4x4 off-road. The beast often tears the universal joints apart and the impacting drive shaft then tends to remove components.

    • @squidcaps4308
      @squidcaps4308 11 месяцев назад +5

      Thanks, i was just wondering what benefit there would be for planetary gear hubs. Now i know. It is a bit the same with electricity, deliver power at higher voltage and use a transformer closer to the destination to convert the "torque". That allows to use MUCH thinner cables for the long distances.

    • @PropperNaughtyGeezer
      @PropperNaughtyGeezer 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@squidcaps4308 Yes, that's a good comparison. Even with the losses when transforming. Gear hubs axles also almost always have brake drums. At least I don't know of any with brake discs. They have the same braking power but not as smoothly and evenly, but they last 3-4 times as long (300,000 - 500,000 km).
      If some people then have a transfer case (for 4x4 or 6x6 drive; mine also has two gears; road and difficult terrain), the drive shaft from the manual gearbox to the transfer case (is this the engl. term?) is almost tiny. The gearbox is just as big but with a correspondingly higher gear ratio.
      Same with retarder. Former the retarders used to be huge and mounted at the back of the gearbox. Today they are so small and integrated into the gearbox. But with high rpm.
      You can also get them with different translations. For long journeys with maximum torque at 90-60 kmh and for short journeys with maximum torque at 60-40 kmh. It only has 50% braking power at high speeds, but you can brake the truck almost to 10 kmh in the city or off-road. For 90-60 you have to use Jakebrake additionally. They have them too, required by law. But it switches on automatically and not as loud as in US. You just have to downshift manually if necessary. We (at least the good drivers) use the foot brake very sparingly.

    You can quickly tell apart R and S cabs by the height of the door handle. R cab has the handle close to the fender while the S cab has it higher

    Snow? I don't see any snow! Oh wait I'm from Canada 😂😂😂😂 We drive through snowy winter conditions as if driving in July! Once we've gone through the first couple snowfalls and cold snaps, We conquer winter with pure vengeance! Your wife is a good driver, she knows to handle the winter road conditions at lower speeds and it's normal to feel nervous when lacking experience in winter driving. She kept the truck out of the cabbage (ditch)

    Bruce, my brother.. duuude, @29:44 when you pan the camera over to that old Scania-Vabis truck... don't lay low on those old ones. Those big bad beasts have a lot of history going back to WWII and beyond pre-war.

    Did they also teach you how to drive a shift stick gentle? That you don't have to be agressive, but just pull it smooth into gear, when the transmission feels smooth? Alos, did you visit Ekiri trailerbuilder? great trailers, and takes lot of load. And also visit Broshuis in the Netherlands. Special heay and long load with different stearing options. And if you go to the netherlands, try to visit Vlastuin or John van De Berg, they build the Scania Torpedo's.

    Don't know if anyone has done the weight and length conversions yet so here goes:
    74 metric tons = 163,142 lbs
    34.5 meters length = 113.2 ft
    I'm thinking that the trailer is fully supporting it's own weight in order to facilitate the pulling. The other side of that is that the roads in Sweden must have a foot or more of asphalt in order to withstand the weight! Wow! We probably haven't gone to hauling 80K + loads in the states as a norm because we still use trains for that, but facilitate where trains don't reach.

    Excellent vlogs Bruce. Thanks for posting. It's very interesting to see what an American take is on European trucks. Have you seen the extra length cabs, they would be ideal for America with your relaxed length laws. I think they are converted in Holland, I'm sure someone will know. 😎👍

    Seeing your enthusiasm on the Scania's is so wholesome. Looking across the horizon. Experiencing different perspectives. Thumbs up for Scania for being so hospitable and welcoming. Even though they don't serve the U.S. market. Other European makes should really pick up on this. An American experiencing multiple European brands would be even more cool, but that's just me reaching. I love this journey. I just love trucking across the world and everyone's dedication 💪

    In Finland we call that trailer type with log load as "full trailer" as full weight of the trailer rests on its own tires. As normal semi trailer about 50% of the weight is resting on the truck itself.
