    My manual transmission is the way to go. I've had both manual and automatic transmission 4x4s and still prefer my manual, and I do go wheeling with it. I like the feel of driving the vehicle, not just pointing it in one direction and letting it control the forward/backward momentum. Also its a millennial anti theft device

      it takes more talent and skill to properly work a manual transmission. Everyone wants to be dedicated to what a Jeep was all about. They never had hill control or descent control, or anti lock brakes, or a touch screen, power windows, heated seats/steering wheel or A/C, etc. etc. Look at the interior of an '80's Jeep like a CJ5. Now people are getting automatic transmissions with selec-speed where the Jeep does the crawling for them. It's rather pointless because your not getting the gratification knowing that you have the ability to do it yourself, instead of the machine doing it for you. Take control over the machine. Don't let the machine do it for you. It's man vs. machine. Take control

There's an additional learning curve needing to press 3 pedals with only two feet, but have to think its making me a better driver in the long run. You are so right about the low torque crawling ability of the manual transmission.

    And when your on a really bumpy rocky slow trail. You have to ride the clutch too much. Starting and stopping all the time.

    I've never driven a 4X4 auto, but I have driven pickups and SUVs with autos, manuals, and manuals with granny gears. I can say I have a preference fo manuals, but that could be in part because I learned and grew up driving manuals. Whether you handle shifting well in treacherous conditions is largely training. I ridden with people who learned manual on flat ground (city and rural), who had trouble shifting when at a steepish angle OR down (and had trouble negotiating a curve smoothly). My current ride is a 2016 Rubicon Hard Rock I bought because it was the only Rubi with 100 miles with a manual. All told, I would prefer to drive a manual, but would prefer to ride with someone driving what they understand.

    Torque converters have something amazing that makes the auto superior. It’s torque multiplication. Even with taller gearing they’ll produce more torque at the wheels. They also have lock up clutches so you’ll get that direct drive and high efficiency.

    • @bdd1469
      @bdd1469 2 года назад +3

      Nonsense. While torque converters multiply torque auto trans also take much more power to run. They need that extra torque to make up for a loss in hp. This is why stick shift cars almost always put down more power on a dyno than an identical auto equiped car, and stick shift cars usually have a quicker 0-60 time on the drag strip if the driver knows how to launch the car. Back in the muscle car hay day man trans cars were always faster on the drag strip than auto equipped cars with their torque multiplying converters. It is only recently with todays computer controlled valve bodies and extra fast shifts that auto cars are faster then manuals. The only way the auto is superior in most situations is if you are not capable or confident driving a stick shift.

    • @KTMcaptain
      @KTMcaptain 2 года назад +5

      @@bdd1469 You are completely wrong and lack a fundamental understanding of drivetrain dynamics. Automatic transmissions are faster, quicker, and more fuel efficient now than stick shifts. If they were so inefficient at transferring torque as you claim that would be impossible and they would simply melt down from heat (since inefficiency turns into heat). While stick shifts make a little more power to the wheel vs a locked up torque converter automatic due to parasitic losses from running hydraulics and having more rotating mass, they deliver far more torque to the wheels since torque converters significantly multiply torque.
      .
      Before lock up torque converters sure, they bled power through the slipping torque converter which only multiplies torque when the stator is moving slowly. Also back then autos were geared very high which negated the TC's torque multiplication because they weren't performance cars. Nowadays the torque converter has a lock up clutch that acts just as a normal clutch would when locked up.
      .
      One of the most popular drag racing transmissions is a 2 speed auto called the powerglide. The best drag vehicles either use an automatic or no transmission at all (staged clutch engagement direct drive).
      .
      In fact, dragster transmissions often have a device called a transbrake which locks two gears together to bind the transmission so the engine can generate boost or maximum torque. Then it can be unleashed with the push of a button that unlocks one of the gears. This is actually available on the dodge demon.
      .
      Welcome to the 21st century. It's absolutely hilarious that you tried to compare modern automatics with ancient implementations of that technology.

    • @bdd1469
      @bdd1469 2 года назад +2

      @@KTMcaptain I am completley wrong ? Auto's are more effecient? I just looked up the gas milage of 2018 Jeep wranglers. I used 2018 because they offered both Jk and JL models, along with more engine choices than ever before, until the new hemi.
      The manual trans Jeeps ALL get 2 mpg more on the highway than the auto equipped Jeeps. While some of the autos do get 1 mpg more in the city, 2 is greater than 1, even in your world...Autos ARE more efficient at transferring something, heat , to the cooling system and the rest of your ride.
      I don't understand? Lol. I know all about powerglides and trans brakes. I've been a certified tech for decades , and built my first glide , with a coan transbrake and convertor , in 1982 ( ish). You're laughing at me because I compared old manual trans to new auto trans , but you're bringing up trans brakes and lock up converters that have been around since the mid seventies. The first time I installed an in-line switch to disconnect the lock up convertor in a 700R4 was around 1986.
      The question is whats better. You say the auto is superior and I disagree. You MAY be a tenth quicker in a drag race but I'll have 10x as much fun as you shifting , AND the crowd will enjoy watching my car more. You may have an easier time wheeling a Jeep in the rocks with an auto, but you can't dump the clutch in a tall gear to create instant wheel speed , which is the best way to avoid sinking in mud. Anyone can steal your auto , while finding someone nowdays that can steal a manual trans equipped vehicle is harder than understand what joe biden is talking about.
      FYI.... I've owned dozens of each , and converted muscle cars from manual to auto just to go racing. I currently have a manual AND an auto Jeep. The manual is much more fun to drive. Every muscle car I switched to an auto I either switched back , or sold shortly after because they were BORING. To each their own, you can keep your autos....

    I prefer the automatic. The last standard transmission I had was on a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder. I feel more relaxed without having to worry about shifting on daily drives.
    Also, the Rubicon 392 has paddle shifters. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, only the 392 Rubicon has them. The paddle shifter has some of the benefits of a standard: the gear can be selected for better control and the lower gears can be selected for going down hill.
    Can paddle shifters be installed after buying a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or do they have to be installed on an automatic transmission specifically designed and built for paddle shifters?
    One last thing. The volume was too low, and I may have missed some of what was said.

    For serious off-road use, and I mean really tough terrain, I prefer the auto as of now, especially in very deep water crossings (like up to your headlights or higher). Reason being if you stall a manual while the exhaust is underwater, glug glug glug it goes up the pipe and makes cranking it difficult or impossible. And there’s quite a bit a resistance on the vehicle while navigating deep water/ mud, further heightening the chance of stalling out

    Let's say hypothetically if I had a '11 Jeep JK Sport v6 (NOT pentastar)... at an intersection, I'll stand in N, but when I get a green, I slap the stick into 1st (very bottom); rev up to 2-4k depending on need; let up on the pedal (foot off); slap the stick into 2nd gear (gearing can sync at moderate RPM without the throttle engaged): and rip roar in 2nd gear mainly because it sounds ferocious; then lift off the throttle, put it in D; and throttle down as needed (let the computer handle it from there)
    Again, I must stress the point that in between shifts, I completely let up on the throttle and let the RPM drop to about 7-800 RPM (the sweet spot), and then apply throttle pressure after it's in the next gear.
    I do not just keep the throttle down and row through the gears, so to speak.
    Also, for what it's worth, I only do this occasionally. I mostly just set it in D when driving and nudge it into neutral at intersections (slow to get up to speed)

    • @KTMcaptain
      @KTMcaptain 2 года назад

      @@d.s7741 it actually does have a clutch, that’s how the lock up function works. None of the behavior you described is needed, but you can use the throttle at any point to accomplish it. It sounds as if you have minimal experience wheeling an auto.
      .
      A clutch doesn’t provide a variable torque ratio. Is simply reduces the amount of torque the engine transfers to the transmission input shaft. A torque converter on the other hand does multiply torque and provide a variable torque ratio… does it so well that koenigsegg uses a torque converter as a CVT.

    • @d.s7741
      @d.s7741 2 года назад

      @@KTMcaptain - yes, a fluid coupling does multiply torque. But you cannot disengage the clutch (or flluid coupling) without shifting gears or putting the auto tranny into neutral. When down shifting with a manual transmission you can slowly engage the clutch (coupling) and control how fast the engine r.p.m.'s slow down or instantly push the clutch in with your foot to disconnect the transmission from the engine. The automatic transmission will always be connected and cannot pre-conceive road conditions. It's a slight technicality, but one that makes an experienced driver of manual transmissions excel over the guy who uses the auto tranny. The manual is much harder to operate, and those guys who can master it get more gratification from their driving experience, on or off road. The best thing about an automatic transmission for off roading, is it gives less shock to the engine and correspondingly the drive train components. Also it's much more difficult to work a manual transmission when you're bouncing around inside of the vehicle as you go over rocks. That's why when I see a guy kill the trails with a manual transmission, he gets mad respect. You only get out of the experience, from what you put in. You can do it yourself, or have something else do it for you. And if you want to dump more money into an aftermarket automatic transmission, you can have it built to do some pretty cool things. Pretty soon when they have all electric off-road vehicles, they will do more than either types of the transmissions we're talking about. I kinda like the aspect of doing more with less. It all works, and as I always say, "it doesn't really matter, as long as you're doing it".

    people are getting lazy. A bicycle with an electric motor on it? The new automatic transmissions suck. They downshift too easily. And I did have a manual valve body in a 1970 Roadrunner that I built for top end. Just ordered a 2022 Wrangler with a manual transmission so I can choose which gear and know for sure which gear I will be in. If a Wrangler is supposed to be fun, then don't let the manufacturer take that away from you. My Roadrunner didn't have electric windows, power locks, bluetooth, XM radio, heated seats, heated steering wheel, anti lock brakes. and a bunch of other crap. How much fun could that be. That was over half a century ago. Pretty soon you won't be able to get a manual transmission, and automotive heritage will be down the toilet. Automatic transmissions are great for drag racing, but manual transmissions are just more fun, because you get the satisfaction of knowing you are making things happen, not a computer controlled fluid coupling. Fortunately in the old three speed transmissions the shifting was done by vacuum pressure and hydraulics. 52 years later and it's refreshing to know you can go Old School and not rely on electronics, or hydraulics, or engine vacuum. When i'm an old man, who thinks things are too difficult, i'll get an automatic transmission again.

    Manual is trash for stop and go traffic like denver. You'll need a new knee. I'm only 50 minutes from a trail that go's to 13,000 feet. Manual sucks anywhere.

      Depends if you pay attention to it or not. For me the manual tranny is just auto/ muscle memory at this point. For some it may not be but it’s all preference,
