My ACCA Journey/ How did I become Chartered Accountant in the UK AS A FOREIGNER / ACCA QUALIFIED

- Hi guys
I am taking you on my ACCA journey in today's video. I am an ACCA accountant and just if you're not sure what it means- it's an accounting qualification that stands for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
Here you can read about my journey on my blog
mumcandoit.com/my-acca-journe...
This is a globally recognised accounting qualification so no matter where in the world you go, it will be recognised and you are ready to start your accounting career anywhere in the world.
I have qualified in July 2019 and I would like to tell you about my journey as I believe everyone's journey is different and I hope I inspire you to keep going or to motivate you to even start if that's what you are wondering right now.
ACCA truly opens up the door to so many opportunities and I believe is one of the most rewarding and versatile professions of all.
Disclaimer: I might be a little bias as there are other accounting qualifications out there, so I'm only sharing my experiences here, not discrediting any other types of accounting qualifications.
I have studied accounting and finance in the Uni where I have gained 9 exemptions so I had to sit 5 professional papers (at this moment there are only 4 professional papers to sit).
Remember you also need to complete the PER's and have 36 months of professional experience in the field. I have not mentioned this in the video hence adding this here.
As I mentioned in my video here is the link to the best resource you can use to study ACCA in the comfort of your own house:

And here is the ACCA website:

@@AgnesMann I see.. alright! Thank you for the motivation and suggestion !! All the best in your career :)
You are amazing 🥰 I found your videos while searching for SBR tips, I am hoping to sit it in December and anxiously waiting for my AFM result from September. Your videos gave me the motivation to keep going forward. Unfortunately I had to start my qualification from F2, in 2015, I was granted just 1 exemption as my B.Comm was too long ago and I didn't study any English in school.
Yet, I managed to pass from F2 to F9 all CBE from the first attempt, by studying just by myself at home from BPP and Kaplan. I do have now 10+ years of working in a multinational company in F&A controlling and reporting and they refund me for the exams, which truly helps. I also have a 3&1/2 yo daughter, who goes to kindergarten and I work part-time, yet I feel that I'm going crazy too often lately, I get obsessed with studying. My partner is not that much supportive of my studies, but we do share parenting and household chores, so it's fine by me. I managed to pass SBL at the 2nd attempt, last year, and I still cannot believe that I did it, as I had several panic attacks while studying for it.. If I pass AFM from the first attempt I will be so incredibly happy. But if I don't, thanks to your videos, which are such a great source of inspiration, I learned to take it easy. Nobody is really rushing me, I have 10 years to finish it since my first professional pass. 😂 Good luck to you also in everything you do! 😎
OMG, you are amazing trying to do it all at one, I know how it feels and therefore I can relate. YOu can do it, take it easy and don't stress too much, it will happen eventually. I want to hear from you once you do qualify eventually (even if it is in 10 years-(I hope to still be doing YT lol)
Hopefully in the next couple of years I'll finish it, as I would be ashamed to still be a student in my 40ies. 🥴
@@argintuldecristal you can never be ashamed of being a student. I have had mature students in my Uni when I was in my 20s and I was surprised they can be even bothered but admiring them for learning new things. Knowledge is power and you should never stop learning new things. Good luck x
Well done, Agnes!!
Thank you for sharing your techniques and your journey to becoming a qualified Chartered Accountant.
I will be signing up with Acowtancy. I learnt about this online tuition from a Google search.
I've had an exemption as well, but procrastination has got the best of me.
Your video has motivated me to complete the four remaining papers. Which papers would you suggest I do first?
Best Wishes

That’s fantastic to hear as this means this video fulfilled it’s purpose. Don’t give up, you will be very proud of yourself you finished it once you get the certificate! Definitely use acowtancy as it just makes it easier for you. As to the papers I would suggest to go with the ones you found easier with the foundation papers. For example I liked audit f paper so despite not wanting to pursue audit career I did choose the AAA. Hope that makes seance and good luck 🤞 thank you for watching and commenting

Acca give many possibilities more than university so I’d say it’s a good direction to go to
Do self study with Acowtancy website only. You do t have to go collage to study acca it’s more expensive that way. Just buy lessons on Acowtancy they much cheaper and better material too. I had some exemptions due to doing uni and it depends where are you studying the level 2. It would be beneficial if you find a job and do some work experience while studying. Good luck and thanks for watching. Let me know what you wanna do

Kind of feeling myself ready to start a little career journey at the moment . I have a finance degree and experience of work in finance and accounting sector . But it was many years ago, almost 8 year past 🥲. Now I am living in UK and my diploma not really qualified in this country. And I have a thought about start ACCA couple of years ago, but didn’t.
My questions are: what level of English you have when you start your journey and what age your kids were? How long it takes to be ready and seat on each exam? What was you first role in accounting job and when you started before ACCA journey?
I am little bit luck of confidence that I can handle it.
Many thanks 🙏 I wish you the best with your career journey! You must be proud of yourself! I really do.
Hi Assel. Thank you so much for your comment
To answer your questions
1- My English was already quite good as I did Uni in the UK so I was confident, however I am still learning every day. I know many of ACCA students however who's english was at lot lower level and they were passing the exams. The examiner is not checking for grammar or how you put the sentences together but check your understanding. So if what you have written above is your own writing you should be fine.. At the start my kids were around 7, then I had a baby boy, then another baby boy. When I finished I had 3 at age 10, 4, 2 (or somewhere close to that) It did take me around 3 years to do ACCA so I can't 100% point what age they were.
2- It takes about 8-12 weeks to prepare for the exam (it can be done quicker if you have no other responsibilities and really try study lots everyday)
3- My first role was accounting assistant when I started ACCA (similar to clerk position)
I think you should definitely sign up to ACCA especially having the degree in finance I am confident you should get some exemptions (call ACCA to find out how many), and it helps that you have already worked in finance as well as this will help you get back to work.
You can do it!
Please reach out if you have any more questions. You can email me if that's easier (agnes.mann@hotmail.com)
I hope I could help.
@@AgnesMann Thank you so much for your open answer, Agnes 🙏 Yes, I’ve made one call to them 2 years ago and they told I can get an exemption for 3 paper. I should try again. Take my fear in a hand and move forward 🤞
@@AgnesMann Your quite determined to start that journey with 3 kids 👍
@@assele1969 I was determined yes, and only had one child at the beginning (the other 2 happened along the way lol) SO you can totally do it too. I belive in you!
thanks for this video. I'm one of the many viewers that you inspired. btw i recently arrived here in UK under dependant partner visa. i'm CPA in my country having a cumulative 7 years (3 years and worked 4 years in UAE) of experience in accounting and auditing however i think it was not recognized here . I've been actively looking for a job and sending applications daily but unfortunately up until now got no work and no interviews. so I am thinking to pursue ACCA then emailed ACCA to check for any exemptions and luckily i was entitled for 4 exemptions (BT, MA, FA, LW). Now my questions is - if I'll take exam only and so not enrolled as students, are there any employer that can hire me (in order to earn to help my partner while self-studying(unenrolled in UK univ)? tia :)
Yes in the UK there are plenty of jobs and especially if you are a student of ACCA with CPA already under your belt, you should be applying for similar positions as you were working in your country. Try some recruitment agencies and they should be able to help you out. Good luck and let me know how did it go.
And Thank you !
Hearty congratulations 👏 to you mam
Thanks a lot! How far are you on your ACCA journey?
@@AgnesMann I haven't started yet but I'm gonna to start it soon
@@AgnesMann what is the total duration of this course
@@idioticedit7695 Thank you for your question. The ACCA claims you can complete the whole course in 3/4 years on average. It will vary from person to person. You can certainly do it quicker if you really focus and do 2-3 exams a session, however, you should prepare to spend around 4 years on it. I hope this helps
Thank you!
You're welcome! How far are you in your journey Alma?
@@AgnesMann Thank you! I've just registered.
Wow, well done. Your story has really motivate me. Thanks for sharing.
Do you know how I can further from ACA to ACCA
Thank you
Ideally you would need to check with ACCA what kind of exemptions they can grant you so that you can build up on ACA knowledge. I hope this helps
@@AgnesMann okay, thanks alot.
Thank you ❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊 what stage of ACCA journey are you in?
@@AgnesMann I joined in 2015 working full time to complete PERs so either failed due to time constraints or just gave up and never attempted :( I have completed my PERs and papers F1-F4. Am sitting F6 and F8 now in December
Wowwwwwwww, Agnes, this story is positively challenging, I tell you. I love it.
Please what do you think of mine status :
I am a CA in my country. I have an AAT, which is the foundation I went through towards the CA status in Nigeria. I hav le a BSc Accounting, ACCA-Certifr and looking to study MSc Accounting and Finance in the UK with about 7 years of experience in accounting as Head of Finance, Finance Manager, Finance Controller in Nigeria(excluding other junior level jobs).
With my CA, I know I can get exemptions to only write 4 papers, that's the Professional level, Strategic papers. I will write the ACCA full status later but that will be much more later after my Msc.
How do you see that I can go at least with current status and What's the prospective pay like and journey?
What else would you also advice, please. Thanks for helping.
I envy you, too👍😂
WOW I only just saw your comment as it was for some reason held for review
I think you are a bright guy that loves to study, and has a great chance of succeeding everywhere in the world. Have you heard of Ken and Mary from the Humble Penny? Watch their channel as he too is an accountant/ entrepreneur and makes a very good living in the UK.
Thank you for comment
Congratulations for your ACCA Journey🎉
I wanna ask that which option will be better for coming to UK:
1)After completing Fundamental Level (F1-F9), and applying for masters.
2)Completing Full ACCA with 3 year internship and then applying for masters.
Any other advice will be helpful!! 😊
thank you so much.
I would say complete ACCA and see where that takes you before completing masters. In the UK ACCA alone is more than enough. I hope this helps
Hi Agnes congratulations in passing Acca exams.. In Italy, where I live Acca is not that well known, but now I will be moving abroad and I really want to study for it.. Do you think is good idea before enroll for a Acca obtaining the other certification such as (Fondation in Accountancy or Diploma in Internatinal Financial Reporting).. I have understand that Acowtancy is the resource you use, is the free material enough for pass the papers? Thank you so much for the answer.. By the way excellent video
Hi Carlo. Thank you for kind words. I think it depends on how many exepmtions are you going to be able to get after completeng the diploma so find out with ACCA if they will accredit any to you and if so then I would probably try that way. I did uni first and it was easier as it has lectures and proper study structure. As to your second question, I don't think the free material is enough to pass, as there are some tricky bits which is quite hard to grasp without tutors insite. But Acowtancy is so affordable that it makes seanse to buy their lessons. Good luck and thank you for watching. Let me know what other questions about ACCA would you be intrested to see.
@@AgnesMann thank you so much I will check with Acca for which paper I will be exempted. And check acowtancy.. Thank for the suggestion.. And good lucky for you carrer growth
Hi, I am in the situation at the moment where I cannot find the motivation and strength to continue studying, as every fail demotivates. I have only 4 exams left and without support from work, kids, full time work and everything else I am struggling to study, I just literally don't have any energy left in the evenings.
I've come across with the aCOWtancy before but never bought the subscription for the full access to the classes and information. I should probably try it and see how it goes.
Just keep pushing- you’ve come such a long way it would be shame to waste all this hard work. It’s very demotivating I know but the failings is what makes you humble and appreciate the success after all. Keep me posted and never give up my friend
So thank you for your channel and I will not give up but push forward to finishing it and i will check your website and the one you recommended called Acowtancy ,thanks again and I will message you again if i have any questions. Thank you so much.
Thank you and sure anytime you have any questions please ask.
Great !
Love from Kolkata, India.
thank you
just purchased acowantancy because of you. Did you only use the classroom videos only to pass your exams or did you use the textbooks as well?
No textbook. Only the classes plus the past papers. Good luck
Hi Agnes, can you make a video which informs us about the number of jobs and types of jobs you did to progress to Financial Controller position ?
Hi Usama. I did cover this in my video on PER and work experience you can watch this here. ruclips.net/video/gRbba_Chpr4/видео.html
Thank you
Hi thanks for valuable information ,
is it good idea to do one year Master in accounting first, and then start doing ACCA after you get exemption for 9 papers ?
the idea is based on saving study time and getting 2 certificates.
Thank you
I’m sure having masters would look good on your cv. Call some recruiters and ask if this would be best and check with acca If you would get exemptions for sure. Thank you
Can you make a video with your husband on how to be supportive of one's partner through their ACCA journey and beginning of a new career please? I am a mum of 3 and going to have my second ACCA exam in 3 week time. My husband is an FCCA and has achieved an amazing career whilst I am stuck home with 3 kids after completing my masters, because my husband works over 12 hours daily including weekends. We need to hear how to split and share the workload around the kids and the house. Thank you very much 😆 I love your videos and your beautiful accent that is very similar to mine 🤩
Omg that’s amazing that both of you are in accounts field! My hubby has not got an academic brain so he never studied but he was just helping whenever he could taking over house chores or playing with kids whilst I studied. It would be hard to cover this in a video especially that we no longer have the same study/work/kids environment and also different house and hubby has his business too. You have to find the way to make it work for your family and get your hubby to help out whenever he can with whatever he can. He would understand how difficult acca exams are- my hubby had no clue lol. Maybe hire a cleaner or childcare if you can to free up your time (only temporarily)
@@AgnesMann thank you for great advice! Your journey story has put me back into "can do" mode 🙂 all the very best for you and your lovely family 💙
Hello, I'm interested in starting my ACCA qualification. Do you think it's a good idea for someone with no experience to do CAT before I start my ACCA. Thank you in advance.
I’d go ahead with acca right from the start. Thank you
Hi. I recently applied to be a student and had 4 exemptions. Now my question is, how do I know what exam to take first for the 9 remaining that I need to pass. Im having difficulty navigating the website actually. It would be great if you could reply. Thank you.
Hi. There is an exemption calculator on acca website which should help you figure it out and if that’s not helpful give acca a call they will be able to better answer this question. Good luck
which advanced papers did you take? I have took aaa and failed it in march, booked in to retake in june. which out out of the four are more easier? more interesting?
I can't say which one would be more interesting for you as everyone has different preferences. They are all equally difficult and I did do AAA as well as APM and it did take me a few attempts to pass it so don't feel discourage if you have failed. Please watch this video and i hope it will motivate you to overlook the failures. ruclips.net/video/7TkheObDZUM/видео.html
Dear Agnes, Your journey is truly inspiring !! Big kudos on completing such a challenging course while being a mom.
I have recently completed my ACCA and have work experience as financial controller and project controller for close to 6 years. Can you suggest the best approach to successfully land a job in UK based on my ACCA qualification?
Thank you so much and congratulations on completing acca. Where are you based? It might be that you need to apply through a working visa so find the job that will be willing to give you visa so you can come and work here. There is a shortage of accountants at the moment so you might be able to find a good opportunity here in the UK
@@AgnesMann I am basically from India. Currently working in Singapore. Can you suggest a best way to reach out to Companies in UK offering work visa sponsorship?
Am on the start....
Long way ahead of you… I wish you best of luck
