  • WE have been rotationally grazing our cows on our homestead since day one, unless of course they are in the winter barn on deep bedding. Well, this year we had them on pasture until December 18th, I would say that's pretty darn good for how poor our fields are! Let's see if we can't make it to January next year!

    We overseed our fields in October with rye grass. It grows well over the winter months. Be perfect timing after the pigs till up everything.

    • @ThePasturedHomestead
      @ThePasturedHomestead  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes! We will do a good mixture of grass seed, including perennial rye

      @@ThePasturedHomesteadget you some clover in there too either red clover or white clover and it'll add nitrogen right back to your pastures + some additional protein and calcium in your pasture & hay.
      Crimson clover does more nitrogen and grows all winter but it's more for winter cover crop as it has to be replanted every year.

    My Grandpa told me years ago 1 acer per cow and two per horse was needed in here in WV, so that sounds about right.

    • @ThePasturedHomestead
      @ThePasturedHomestead  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah that's about right if youre rotationally grazing on quality pasture. Our Fields are very low quality because of years of neglect from the last owners

    The sticky things are cocklebues. Total nuisance. I used to walk my pasture looking for cockleburs and thistle plants. I'd use a long handle shovle and dug them out before they went to seed. Pretty well wiped them out in one day.

    • @ThePasturedHomestead

      We haven’t seeded any of our fields yet. Our property way majorly overgrown when we bought it. It’s made some improvement over the last year and 1/2 but we still have a long ways to go on pasture quality!
