Thanks for mentioning that. I forgot to mention that in the video. I wrapped the seat belt thru the wheel and buckled it which works as well in holding the wheel in place.
I am having the exact same problem with my 2020 GMC 2500 Denali. Started expierencing the grinding @ about 4,000 miles. Took to to the Dealer and they diagnosed and replaced the steering gear only to find out that the problem was still there. took it back to the Dealer shortly after and they replaced the intermediate shaft. That worked for for bout another 4,000 miles. Dealer says "GM field engineer is aware of the problem" and stated that as of today March 20th 2021 there is still currently "no fix". Absolutely ridiculous!!! I had a 2016 GMC 2500 Denali and never had any steering issues whatsoever. Over 90k miles and no problems. Thank you for the education on this issue. Good luck to you!
My 2022 Denali 2500 just started with the clunking in the steering wheel at 9800 miles. I’ll fix it myself, not wasting my time at the dealer, unless it’s a bigger more costly repair. I still love this truck.
Mines in the shop right now. Just got the call 2020 AT4 2500. Bad steering intermediate shaft. Good video wish I would have found it before. 29K miles and covered under waranty. Hopefully it stays fixed after reading the comments.
2020 Sierra 1500 - similar issues with intermediate shaft boot. 1st time they repacked, 2nd time they repacked again but this time advised GM is working with the parts supplier on a fix and they added a note to my VIN for this special part once it becomes available. no time frame given.
This is the same problem GM has had since 04 still refuses to admit there is an issue. There used to be a Bearing Ethie bottom of the steering column that I had to replace on my o5 that took care of the problem. This was after 5 intermediate shaft replacements through the dealership
Mine started doing it around 500 miles. Dealership had no idea what to do about it, so I just ignored it. The truck’s gone now though. I got a 2024 now. Almost 8000 miles so far, not a single issue.
GM has had over 20 years to fix this problem so I would not be counting on a solution from them anytime soon. My new 2022 AT4 is my 7th truck since '02 and I've had to replace that part on every truck, and more than once. Never got more than 20k miles out of them before this issue would start. To this day the dealer will tell you they've never heard of this problem. It's so damn annoying! When they would finally acknowledge there's an issue, all they would do was pump the shaft back and forth to redistribute the grease. That fixed the problem for about a month at the most. So I got tired of dealing with the dealership. Dorman and Borgeson made a good aftermarket shaft for previous models but they have yet to make anything for the 2020 and up. With 33k on my newer '22, all I can do is keep filling it with grease until one of the aftermarket parts come available. 😡
Just replaced one on a 2021 at work today. At least on this one the slip joint had side to side play. Replaced it and it went away. I work for a Chevrolet dealer. Truck had 10k miles.
Mine was replaced 1200 miles ago and it's back. Truly the only thing I dislike about my truck. Will go back until it's right or I can replace it with an aftermarket piece when they release one.
2021 GMC 2500 Denali HD 6700 miles, same thing, although I dont really feel it in the steering wheel. Dealer repalced Intermediate shaft per "DOC#PIT5809A MAY APPLY" , although they weren't really sure it would fix the problem as it was too intermediate to determine the location and wanted to keep it overnight to test cold in the morning. Told them I'd do the testing (I needed my truck back for towing). It seems better, but still heard it, 2 miles from the dealership. Will be back if this becomes worse again.
The sad thing is, they gave me a Canyon loaner with 198 miles on it, and I drove it about 140 miles today, heard the same noise. I think this one is here to stay unfortunately.
ive heard the new updated part still does it as well on some forums the grease I added seems to be working pretty well. Im at 10,000 miles now not any worse than when I added the grease at 5000 miles

Thanks Shawn H for the video. I have a 2021 Denali 2500 duramax. I have the same problem. My truck was at the dealer at 40 miles for a week. It's really a big disappointment after paying all that money for the truck. I can see this is going to be a constant reoccurring issue. There is no good new trucks worth a shit anymore. I was going to take a punch and smash that shaft a little bit to get rid of the play but I didn’t feel like I needed to do that to a new truck. For the reason that I am paying for an engineer to build my truck shouldn’t have to do it for them.
I'll just stick to my ole 72-73 Chevy Jimmy with factory 327sp/o. All I've ever had to do to it is oil changes every 5000, 1 starter, 1 battery and 1 set of plug wires headers and Flowmasters. Runs like a sewing machine. And most importantly,.....you can work on it. Good luck with your truck brother. Its ashame the problems these trucks are having all over YT. GMC needs to so a full recall on these trucks. Have you been issued a "Lemon Law" case number??
No i believe its on 1500's as well unfortunately . I saw another guys video on youtube awhile back about it. He ended up stuffing a bunch of zip ties in the intermediate shaft to reduce the slop.
Thank you for the video and nice work. Just a shame that you have to go through this on a brand new truck. This is basically low tech. How long has GM been designing and building steering column shafts? Sheeesh!

Supposedly GM has. replacement updated steering shaft in the works. There are a few posts about the bulletin on some of the forums. Who knows if its a long term fix or not.
My 2020 2500 gmc was awful! I had the same issue. Plus horrible wind noise. Starting at 50 mph. Gm never fixed any of it. I finally dumped the piece of shit. My dealer was pretty good on a trade. I have a 2021 2500 Chevrolet. Seems to be a lot better.

Yup, I have heard the same thing. Buddy of mine knows a mechanic and he said they are different. But Laura Buick put the same one back in my truck. I don’t think Laura knows about it yet.
Have you noticed the inch play in the steering wheel. Or how it wanders down the road. Getting them to fix something is like pulling fingernails. I’m test driving the 1500 duramax when it comes in. I should make them give me all my money back

I thought about getting a Ford F-150. If you want the gmc you could look up the Lemon law. I’m pretty sure they have to buy the truck back if problem is not resolved within like five times
@EFEX3 KANPOL ya I’m getting out. Trading it in on a tundra before they update that. I drove one and it reminded me of the old crown Vick. I’m a gm guy but not any more. If this don’t work out I may try a ford. If that don’t work I’m going back to a 2000 Toyota Corolla. Not kidding. Go from a 80,000 truck to a 4,000 car. Cheeper all the way around lol
@EFEX3 KANPOL I don’t think gm is going to build anything better any time soon bc people are still in line to get one. Maybe in 3 or 4 years they will get the hint

My 2022 denali hd 1000 miles is doing this so still not addressed as of yet
I ended up selling my truck.
Couldn’t swallow that load from GM.
For the price I paid good thing I got rid of it.
Got a tundra lol not any better but just going to beat the shit out of it.
Ok
Is it only a 2500 problem??? I just bought a 1500 at4, i haven't pick it up from the dealer but reading this is making me nervous..
No i believe its on 1500's as well unfortunately . I saw another guys video on youtube awhile back about it. He ended up stuffing a bunch of zip ties in the intermediate shaft to reduce the slop.
I have a 2021 3500 doing it as well.
Dammmm, thanks for responding
Drill in that steering wheel shaft and tap in a zerk fitting
That's a great idea, thanks for mentioning
a zerk could be put in it without removing anything.
Did they charge you for replacement?
I am going to leave my truck with them until they fix it so I’m gonna drive their rental for a long time I guess lol
But you shouldn't have to leave your vehicle that long at the dealership to be repaired.
Thank you for the video and nice work. Just a shame that you have to go through this on a brand new truck. This is basically low tech. How long has GM been designing and building steering column shafts? Sheeesh!
IT'S A SHAME THIS GUY IS PAYING SO MUCH FOR THIS
TRUCK WHICH HE IS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH IN WHICH
HE HAS TO FIX BECAUSE THE
DEALERSHIP CAN'T!
Somebody said it's like a plastic bushing at the firewall.
wrong
Gm replace my sons 2020 shaft I have a 2020 also no problem with mine yet but I’m sure it’s coming
That's your problem that steering wheel shaft I have a Chevy 2018 Silverado I bought new and a 2021 I bought new the 2018 15000 miles it left me stranded 600 miles from home fuel injector went bad and a spark plug and it quit the 2021 so far 3000 Miles problem
I got a 2020 Sierra 2500HD DENALI and I got the same slop from day one. And now my ac is actin up. Bout to take it in.. no way a 100k truck should be this shitty. My Yukon DENALI was great. I don't want to lemon this truck because then I'll be out of a truck but damn it's driving me mad
Having the same issue on a 2021 AT4 2500HD with 1500 miles
They have had this problem since '99.
My truck it’s a 2021 and it is doing it.
Not only is it doing that it wanders all over the road
Mine wanders as well. Clunking noise if I barely move the wheel. Already replaced the steering gear and intermediate shaft on my 2020 2500...
Damn mine jst started today 1700 miles
Supposedly GM has. replacement updated steering shaft in the works. There are a few posts about the bulletin on some of the forums. Who knows if its a long term fix or not.
Same problem 2020 At4 2500
Same problem on my Sierra 2500HD, 2021
My 2020 2500 gmc was awful! I had the same issue. Plus horrible wind noise. Starting at 50 mph. Gm never fixed any of it. I finally dumped the piece of shit. My dealer was pretty good on a trade. I have a 2021 2500 Chevrolet. Seems to be a lot better.
I have the same problem with my 2020 AT4 2500
Put a match down the gas tank and call it a day😏
its a diesel
Did you get it fixed yet?
They replaced my shaft and it’s doing it again.
I havent taken the truck back yet since I have been adding grease to it seems to help and make it tolerable. Ive read that they have a updated replacement part in the works or already out by now.

Yup, I have heard the same thing.
Buddy of mine knows a mechanic and he said they are different.
But Laura Buick put the same one back in my truck.
I don’t think Laura knows about it yet.
My 2020 has the same clunking noise on the steering wheel when i drive down a dirt or bumpy road. Wtf
Have you noticed the inch play in the steering wheel.
Or how it wanders down the road.
Getting them to fix something is like pulling fingernails.
I’m test driving the 1500 duramax when it comes in.
I should make them give me all my money back
@@ericbuchta9765 mine still drives in a straight line but ibdo notice the clunking noise when driving down a dirt road
Sad when you gotta work in a new 70k truck. The trucks these days are junk
I totally agree.
$80,000 truck, I should of just got a canyon 😏.
Could it really be that dodge is better?
I would buy a Toyota Tacoma before I buy another dodge. I’m sorry they are junk. My last one everything was bad at 50k miles.
Tires were cupping, ball joints, Tie rod ends, -
List to long to put on here.
Just picked up my Truck this Friday. And i have it allready. It is Horrible. I am so unhappy and dont know what to do now.
@EFEX3 KANPOL lol ya man I’m getting out now is the best time trade in value is probably more then you paid for it.
@EFEX3 KANPOL I don’t think gm is going to build anything better any time soon bc people are still in line to get one.
Maybe in 3 or 4 years they will get the hint
I have the 3500 at4. Similar issue. Slack in the steering.....
My 2012 impala just started doing this. It now 223k miles i should take it back to thw dealer 🤔
It's nothing dangerous, only annoying.
