Just realised having this take place in 2017 is great because it actually explains why UNIT isn't present in series 10 to fight the Monks. IRL Jemma Redgrave was busy with other filming commitments so in Pyramid we got the UN instead, but now there's an in-universe explanation for why UNIT was unavailable
This is much more powerful when you realise it's Capaldi's Doctor she's referring to.

@@DoctorWhoKage Maybe I'm just being an egotistical American 😜, but when I first saw that scene in which the Doctor was told UNIT had folded, the impression I got from the dialogue was that the US was responsible because it had pulled its funding (not unlike how Trump, at the time, was withdrawing US money and/or presence from numerous global organizations and treaties).
@@retnavybrat well, either way, that or BREXIT might have been the surface-level reason as to why it flopped because they didn't want to reveal that they've been secretly taken over by a time-travelling alien dictator.

When Kate snaps at the Grand Serpent... utter chills! These scenes are so good! Also this explains where Kate and UNIT have been this whole time, and I love that this is going down while the 12th Doctor is at St Luke's University with Bill, Nordole and Missy so when she says she can get in touch with someone Grand Serpent does not want to mess with she really means it! I hope we see Kate again in one of the specials, probably the final one? I could see her returning with a rebuilt UNIT in tow!
It'd be good to see the Doctor put in a cameo at the end too, after everything was done, and be annoyed that he missed it lol

We now Got an explanation of what happened to UNIT and why they were dispatched in resolution. The grand serpent had it sabotage.
Kate deserves more screen time, she's so badass!
If there's one thing I'm extremely thankful to Chris Chibnall for -- it's his handling of Kate Stewart as a character (not dumbing her down to make a companion seem more clever by comparison... cough-cough, airplane, fuel, bomb, cough-cough). This scene does her justice.
And yes she had to go dark for the rest of the episode and was essentially bait but what do viewers expect? She's MORTAL after all. What's important to me, at least, is she could rely on her mind to figure out who the saboteur was then had enough good sense to keep her head down (no doubt she was still leading and organizing from where she was) until the tactical opportunity to take a more active part arose.
She may have been powerless but she wasn't helpless,
she is a good leader and doing her dad proud
Chibnall has a thing for making strong lead female characters that aren’t The (main) Doctor… looking at how he characterised Fugitive Doctor
I've had people ask how the Grand Serpent allowed the whole Dalek thing to happen after UNIT was dissolved, chances are in his time travelling through the task force he might have accidentally skipped over it without noticing lol.

Brilliant writing for Kate. I always knew she was a strong character; its good to see her be able to show that.
Too bad they couldn't write like this for Whittaker and the entire season.
Brilliant writing? … her character was wasted? They literally gave her plot armour of “im wearing something for the exact thing you could try to harm me with”
And then in the finale she just… stood around 😂

While I was pleased to see Kate Stewart after several years, I felt she didn't have enough screen time in Flux overall.
Kate is one of the best things Moffat ever did Doctor Who always needs a Stewart 💙

I loved the grand serpent! And Kate may have been underused, but she was brilliant with what she had! It's great to hear the brig again, as well!

We've got a successful UNIT audio spin-off already. I'd adore some episodes put to screen of course, but Kate and Osgood have really found a home at Big Finish.

I liked the whole storyline with the Serpent, Unit, and Kate. Maybe it's only because I liked Kate a lot when she was a regular part of the show.
And even tho I liked the storyline, I'm unconvinced by this scene. She seems too unstable there. The value she gives to Unit makes it somewhat believable, but I'd liked if she was more chill in this scene, talking with the serpent and being as smug as him.
I think overall she seems too emotional. Hum... but she was very much emotional in the Zygon Inversion... That's probably just my bias view then
I think Kate being emotional makes sense. He literally took her families life work and disabled it from the inside. Especially knowing her love for her father.

it's surprising how well chibnall handled kate stewart and unit overall considering what the rest of his works were like. it had actual foreshadowing and offered an in reason explanation for why unit wasn't around for the monks. also she became nick fury levels of badassery
Hopefully UNIT will get a much bigger role in The Centenary special

When I saw all the snakes I thought it was a call back to the 4th doctors story where they had to use mirrors to draw it out of the body.
That's 'Kinda', a 5th Doctor story, but I agree in that I'd hoped it was an offspring of The Mara.
That "2017" at the start really didn't need to have a PNG of a cloud thrown in front of it.

There was one thing I said to myself every time I saw Kate during the Chibnal era.

I just realized this feeds into the "Resolution of the Daleks" when the Doctor finds out UNIT has been closed down.
Very thoughtful of them to make the bomb beep so she has time to get away.
I watched every minute of the entire saga and looked him up on the TARDIS wiki to boot, and I still have no idea who this guy was, or why he was doing any of this. In fact, that could apply to most of the bad guys in the Flux series. Not only that, his presence was practically superfluous, serving only to muddy the waters of an already frustratingly convoluted story. This is definitely one of several subplots in this season that could have been cut to good effect.

Surely this can't all be thrown away after the Flux. 2022 = 5 years on from this 2017 timeline, so I'm calling it that the Spring special is going to be based back on the GS somehow.

Instead of the grand serpent, this should have been the harmony shoal from doctor mysterio as that episode ended with unit starting to be infiltrated but we never got a result

It’s called opening the door and going into the house, she’d have to go around/past the door and then close it which would’ve definitely been a few seconds at least. But she noticed the beeping and put 2 and 2 together
If you blow up the building when she's standing in the doorway, there's a much increased chance she'll be blown across the road and survive. But if you wait until when she would be deep in the house to make the bomb go off, there's much more of a chance she'd be killed by debris and the confined space.

Kate shows up to do absolutly nothing but be an idiot in these final parts of flux, what was the point of introducing her beyond fan service?
I haven't been able to watch actual episodes for a couple of years now, so I have no idea what the context of this scene is. However, purely on internal evidence, she appears to have chosen an extremely odd strategy for dealing with him. Someone who's done what she says he's done is extremely unlikely to respond to such threats by backing down. You shouldn't approach such a person and let him know that you know what he's doing, until you're ready to take him down - and telling him what you know should be done solely as a diversionary tactic, to distract him from noticing what you're really doing.
Was this all part of a more intelligent plan, or just bad writing?
No, unfortunately it's just bad writing. Ever since Series 11 started, there have been so many missed opportunities and mistakes like the ridiculous fixation on unnecessary and frustrating backstory and lore (and not even doing it in a way which is interesting or unique). At least we have Russell T Davies' return in 2023 to look forward to.

@@IllusivePrime In the S8 finale, Missy murdered Osgood and blew a hole in the side of the UNIT plane, causing Kate to be pulled out. She was caught by her father who had converted into a Cyberman. She later reappears twice in S9, it might be worth a rewatch if it's slipped your memory.

I don't like Jodie's portrayal of the Doctor, too weak and no gravitas. I did like Jo Martin's Doctor as she could really act and hold a scene. That's absolutely the case here too. I'd certainly not like to be in Kate's bad books!

I'd argue he's used her better than Moffat.
He's the person who created and introduced the character and she was her best in the episode. Day of the Doctor... caused a retcon in her character which kinda sucked but then Series 9's appearance was good.
