    I get excellent results using a shade that is a foot over the plants, that allows only morning or evening sun. Works well in Southern California with with lophs. But only after I’ve grown them indoors for a few months. I use a white pillow case as a shade, cut open so It’s only one layer thick. Let’s through just enough light to make very happy plants.

      Thanks for the comment! Plants as shades are great, and they allow good air circulation.

    The local soil you show is actually more granitic than sandy. If you can find decomposed granite, that’s a perfect substitute for the local soil used. If you rinse it of fines it will be more loose and gravely. The stuff I have access to is meant for landscaping and paths and sets too hard for San Pedro so I rinse it first to get rid of super fines. My recipe is roughly 10% rinsed decomposed granite, 30% pumice, 25% aeration pro (perlite/coir combo), 15% sand and 20% sieved cactus soil. Then worm casting tea with waterings.

    Jerry, at what temperature would you consider it to be too hot for the seedlings outdoors? I'm in Phoenix, AZ, so temps can get quite hot by late spring but would like benefits of outdoor growing as long as possible

    I've got San Pedro survive a hard freeze, 6c in San Jose CA. Adult, 2m

    • @sanpedromastery6262
      @sanpedromastery6262  3 года назад +2

      Here it never freezes but in the mountain nearby there is one that survives way below freezing. Not sure exactly what temp is the absolute minimum before they die.

    • @garyamericant3143
      @garyamericant3143 3 года назад

      I was wondering about that. I know for sure i will cover mine when the temps dip only when they are younger.

    Hi I have a san pedro that I left in a room for a month and it grew a long white branch. Will it stay disfigured now that I have in planted? Or should I cut the piece off?

    • @sanpedromastery6262
      @sanpedromastery6262  3 года назад

      If it's white, you need to very progressively get it used to light, and no direct sun for a while until it's green again.

    Hey what would a good hard soil mix be from scratch? All the soil in my area is mostly clay. Could I use your recipe but instead add sand to my local soil?

    • @sanpedromastery6262
      @sanpedromastery6262  3 года назад +1

      Not sure, I would only use a tiny bit of that clay soil. Maybe you could try something like 60% store bought potting soil, 10% your local clay soil, and 30% perlite... something like that. It costs nothing to try :)

    • @nothinginterestinghere7612
      @nothinginterestinghere7612 3 года назад

      @@sanpedromastery6262 hmm I could try that, I think I will stick to perlite and soil, clay makes the soil poorly drained. I have killed plants by using too much native clay soil

    Do they grow all year inside behind the window aswell?
    What to look out for?

    • @sanpedromastery6262
      @sanpedromastery6262  3 года назад

      Yes, I think I have a video on growing them indoors. A lot of people grow them all year round in front of a window, and if the light is insufficient, you can get a bit of extra light from a fluorescent T5 or a small LED grow light.
