A number of years ago I discovered through hearing tests that each of my ears had particular loss above certain frequencies. I may not catch some subtleties, but all fundamental frequencies of instruments I could hear.
This is the approach that saved me from thinking I had lost any ability to mix: all good recordings are mastered. If you can listen to a good mastered recording and still be able to analyze and pick out things, than it's okay. I'm not doing studio recordings or mega live sound events for a living. How I listen and mix is good enough, even though I'm still learning to refine my blending skills--and that's how I trust my ears. Thanks for this great video! I'm lovin' it!

That 414 pad test was shocking to me. Is it possible that the volume of the drums is slightly overwhelming the mic, causing some slight "compression," thereby fattening up the tone in a subtle way? Either way, that was very cool to hear. Thank you for this.
