  • Can you still trust your ears after watching the video? Because the audio is same even though it looks like it is "four" first and then "pour" in the second.
    This is an audio illusion called The McGurk effect whereby speech sounds are often miscategorized when the auditory cues in the stimulus conflict with the visual cues.
    This becomes important aspect for producers when the decisions are heavily based on visual feedback. Hence, we can start to hear things that are not significant or not actually there.
    So this video is just a food for thought.

    This is an audio illusion called The McGurk effect whereby speech sounds are often miscategorized when the auditory cues in the stimulus conflict with the visual cues from the speaker's face. The audio in both are exactly the same.
    This becomes important topic for producers when the decisions are heavily based on visual feedback. Hence, we can start to hear things that are not significant or not actually there or vice versa.
    Hence, wanted to make this video as a food for thought.

      Either the audio of the second part is lower so it trix the ear, or actually is not the same, during the first part u can CLEARLY hear the initial noise of the 'Fffffff' while in the second is not that pronounced. So either because the second is lower in volume or because is slightly different, in every case the comparison is not reliable.

    • @Alice-Efe

      The speech is same on both part but the second part has louder background music hence peaks are slightly decreased to keep loudness around same levels (Unfortunately, the source material had the background music). The McGurk effect (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McGurk_effect) is a well-documented phenemenon and you can find many diferent examples online.

      Neither my eyes nor my brain is playing tricks on me. In the first instance, she is saying four because the lady doesn't touch the top lip to the bottom but the bottom lip touches her front teeth. So it is physically impossible for her to make the sound "p" of pour while bottom lip is touching front teeth. And in the second instance, both lips are joined while saying the first alphabet which is p. "f" sound can't be produced while lips are touching. The lips have to have at least a little gap to push the air out which produces the sound itself.
      Don't judge me of being such a nerd; I had nothing better to do :P
      Edit: An obvious lack of the higher frequencies, in the second instance, required to create the "f" sound in contrast to the first instance. Confidence and clarity in your listening skill is king in the audio world so guys, don't consider yourself tricked just because someone said so. Moreover, I'm not denying the phenomenon Altogether; just denying this video only.

      @@Arcessitor read my edit kindly. and yes I did nerd a bit here but guess what my points are 100% accurate. I did misunderstand the messege the video was conveying. that's why I put the edit there.
      and also one thing, I haven't gone around the Internet calling people idiots and fools. there is always place for constructive criticism amd subjective opinion but there never is and never will be any place for those who spread hate. So refrain from calling people names as you don't know how it may affect someone.

    • @azizarrahim6977
      @azizarrahim6977 2 года назад

      @@Arcessitor ow and as you've already established my nerdiness, I'd like for you to know that if both the speech audio is same and they only defere in the level of the bg instrumental, than it would happen because of frequency masking. However, the frequencies the make the sound of "f" and the frequency range of the bg instruments are spread quite differently and don't overlap in such a significant way that it would cause masking.
      If you or anyone else finds a fault in my assessment and has a correction, please feel free to correct me. I always keep an open mind and learn from my mistakes. and for people like @Arcessitor I really hope you find the wisdom in yourself to not spread hate and try to make others feel bad.

    Great topic. When I first watched this on a BBC documentary it changed the game for me. I blind a/b all my decisions now so I don’t know if the moves I made are in or out and then decided with my ears. I really feel like my listening skills have improved much faster like this and my mixes sound better.

    At first I watched the two examples and I felt confident that I heard the first example was saying “four four four” and the second was saying “pour pour pour”. But then I tried playing the examples with my eyes facing away from the screen so I’m just listening, and wow, I was surprised to hear that they didn’t sound that different after all and still heard the initial “four four four”.
    Makes me think I need to maybe look away from my screen every now and then to really listen for changes if any.
    Thanks for this enlightening video Alice. ❤️

    I don't want my music to sound well balanced. I just want my EQ curves to look pretty! Similarly, it's not the music that comes from the DAW that's important. You have to colour code all the tracks so it looks good on a video. ;)

  • @shilohpatten3761
    @shilohpatten3761 2 года назад

    I heard, “poor four vore”, both times. It must have been something else all together. The EQ of the backing track just made it sound like another take of saying the same thing that I heard, twice.

    "Just use your ears" is the worst platitude ever. For one, it's the brain that translates aural vibrations and puts meaning on them. Then there is no way that "just using your ears" can miraculously guide you to the settings you want/need on the millions (potentially infinite) of setting combinations of knobs/sliders available in modern music production.

      The irony is that hearing problems are just as common as eyesight problems, particularly if you're getting old, but vision problems can usually be corrected. I have to wear spectacles to see my spectrum analyser, which I believe tells the truth about a waveform, but I literally cannot trust my ears, my speakers, or my room, to tell the truth about the sound. (Mixing hi-hats when you can barely hear them isn't much fun, I can tell you, and getting bass levels right without some help from the screen is hard at the best of times).
