Oh that brought back a massive fond memory as my uncle Stan was a driver then clippy on the ol' route 12 and guess what he got every birthday and Xmas but someone in the family would buy him one of the models and he got quite cross about it in the end hehe That route was a murderous one too, drivers had to be taken off when their kidneys were giving up as it was from outside of South Croydon to somewhere in the wilds of NE London suburbs it originally ran and he did 4 trips a day 2 there and 2 back then the unions got through crew changes etc but still to and from Victoria I think was pretty heavy going. On our local route 94 (old 94 not new one) we had this conductor who used to sing all the old music hall songs to the passengers and he was bloody good at it, he was about 90 and no one wanted to retire him off and he never got any trouble from us troublemakers either and anyone giving him a hard time soon found we had his back as he was such a gentleman. Imagine that on todays bump n grind joyless plastic boxes.

Another little anecdote that made me chuckle. Back in the 70's there was a joke shop up in Holborn that sold mega strong stink bombs and me and me mates bought a stackload and we used to lurk outside the bus station in Lewisham or New Cross and wait for the bus to pull out and as it passed us we would lob on a couple of these horrendous stink bombs and within seconds you heard this frantic dingdingdingding'ing as the clippy is trying to get the driver to pull over and then to gales of us almost wetting ourselves, you saw the people literally bundle off coughing and gagging. So one day we did this poor hapless bus and who was on it but me mother and oh boy did I catch it hot, lady of Irish temper and did she give me a proper hiding for it and I had to hand over the stash of these stink bombs :( We also used to lob 'em down the escalators at tube stations, Oxford Circus was an absolute hoot and seeing these poor people having to scatter like leaves in a wind and the pong that wafted up was proper bad. We were all banned from the shop in Holborn but I discovered another joke shop in Bethnal Green that did the same evil bombs and we musta paid this blokes holiday the amount we kept buying hehehe

Nice job. I have one, but it's done up to resemble the bus from the old Cadbury's Double Decker chocolate bar commercials from around 1980 (so it's orange). Not sure if it's worth anything, but I'm keeping it because I like it--and Double Decker was my favourite chocolate bar!

Brilliant Martin, make me wished i was a kid, I remember the real old Route Masters travelling up the M6 late at night in the early 80’s, I think they we’re going to Lancaster to have all new brakes fitted, they used to travel in groups of 3-4 at about 35 mph, can’t think for the life of me why LT had them travelling that sort of distance to have new brakes fitted when there must have been somewhere more local to London, I do remember by the time they we’re all done shortly after they started to retire them sad really such an iconic bus.

  • @ROCKINGMAN

Nice restoration from the grubby looking model at the beginning, but, I never liked these Routemasters as much as the Dinky ones from the 60s with spun wheels. The early Corgi ones too have a charm about them These models had the larger plastic oversized wheels which were nasty. The Corgi OOC models are great as are the EFE first editions.

Are these old models still going around in London? I had heard that when they were being replaced, some would run on selected routes for nostalgic purposes.
If only there weren't those pesky copyright bollocks, the suitable music for this restoration would be "Summer Holiday" by Cliff Richard.
