I’ve given this a lot of thought. I’ve finally figured out why I love these videos so much. The sandblasting and repainting erases the time and takes it back to when it was first being assembled in the Tonka factory. I imagine working in a factory would be tedious and boring, but I can’t think of any other factory job that would be more rewarding than making these toys that would mean so much to kids of all ages! It sends me back to when my brother and I would build roads, bridges and driveways for our “town”. Gee, I wish I was a kid again!
I had one exactly like this wen I was 6 years old. It was stolen within a month of me receiving it for Christmas, and I since felt like I lost a piece of my childhood. If I could find one today I would almost certainly purchase it just to restore my loss. I would then donate it so I can part with it on my terms. Amazing how some life events stay with us into our adult years. Thank you, you do amazing and worthwhile work.
Fantastic job! I had the loader and the dump truck when I was a kid in the early 70's. Brings back a lot of good memories. Thank you. Keep up the great videos.
Another great resto Martin. I love the 'G' Clamp rivets, clever idea that I have never seen before and the axle caps, really finishes off the job. Probably better than when it left the factory!!!
Perfect restoration. You lucked out on that one, no broken pieces, just needed disassembly, blasting, and the famous Retrohax powder coating to turn it into a first class display piece. Well done. stay safe and thanks.
Amazing job, fantastic results. Thing is brand new! That original powder coat looked much tougher blasting off. I could only imagine that must have been the majority of time spent for you. Never seen you use a C-clamp on those rivets like that. Really cool idea. Those rivets aren't going anywhere and you didn't muss the new paint job.
Well done Mr Hax, in these days of lockdown and raging alcoholism that was a pleasure to watch, I noticed at the beginning when you were stripping the vehicle down you used your drill and punch quite a lot. I'm fairly certain you used those tools more times on this restoration than all the others put together........................lovely job.
Hi Martin WOW you made a great job of that, new you would, looking forward to the Scraper now, your Gran children should love them or you he he, at least they will have a new lease of life? ATB Wayne.
Hey Martin lad, another stunning result, I strongly suspect that today's plastic toys will be unrestorable. Never mind, they call it progress! By the way, I found out that those weird clips on the ends of toy axles are called capped starlock washers, thought that might be of use cos the little buggers are quite often not re-useable. Best regards from that geriatric Yorkshire fart in Ireland.
It looks fantastic Martin. I was looking for one of those rivet tools. What are they called and what type of rivets are they? The borescope turned up and yes it's a great tool. I have only used it on the wife so far. Well done! Take care, Jeff
I had one of these farily recently. Somebody wanted some parts off it, and was willing to pay what I wanted for the whole thing, so I took off the parts (saving on shipping big time) and sent them to him, then scrapped the rest of it
The little girl next door was playing with one the other day. I paid her father to pick up pellets at Tractor supply, and she went with him, and picked up another toy truck,, taking more then half of his profit. lol. I dont recall another girl in my lifetime experience playing with those toys.
Martin, I see you are using a new type rivet and rivet tool. They look really nice. Where did you get them and what are they made of? It looks like chrome plated brass or copper... IDK. Thumbs Up!
What size rivets did you have to get......I ask as I have 5 Mighty Dumps and 2 Mighty Loaders I need to rebuild (had to completely strip them due to rust) and ascertaining the correct rivet size to buy is becoming a pain.
Outstanding as usual Martin! Can I ask, as you must have hours of footage with all the videos you make do you keep them all backed up and if so what are you using to back them all up ?a massive hard drive or something Cheers M
Awsome buddy i been wanting one of them rivet clamps but the shipping from usa is the killer you get them axl caps in uk be interested in knowing where from did you get rivets from pintonka too
Odd coincidence time. When I was shopping yesterday, I was asked by my sister to pick up either a frontloader or a dump truck for her one year old granddaughter to play with in the sandbox. The store had both made by Tonka, but the frontloader, had a lot more plastic than metal, in fact the scoop was all plastic with a flimsy little lever that wouldn't last long. The body of the dump truck at least was still metal so I selected that. Tonka should be embarrassed to sell such cheap stuff.
Amazing restoration. Do those 'end caps' that attach to the axles/pivot points have a specific name? I've been trying to source some without success. Thanks for sharing.
I built my own Powder Coating oven here at ruclips.net/p/PLM5aAjIo5X2x3mYessFB-_ynmP8h68dIG

Nice memories.
Some people like the sound of birdsong, some the sound of a babbling brook , I like the sound of a sandblasting machine. Nice job Retro.
Thanks 👍
Nicely done, sir. From playground trash, to showroom flash, ready to tackle the job again.

It is a vehicle identification number. Nice work.
I had one of those back in 70's bloody loved it.

Thanks bud, yes I have a supply of them now.
Who needs an ultrasonic cleaner when you can move your hands that fast!
brilliant
Awsome!
Thanks!

The borescope turned up and yes it's a great tool. I have only used it on the wife so far.
Well done!
Take care, Jeff
Haha, nice one Jeff. Its a Pintonka tool from the USA and the rivets are Tubular rivets.
Thanks Martin, I had no idea what they we called. I have a little present for you next week, I'll send it tomorrow.
Take care

That number is the model number, the other one you got with this (the scraper),will be 3935 .
Just like the day you took it out of the box.
Martin, I see you are using a new type rivet and rivet tool. They look really nice. Where did you get them and what are they made of? It looks like chrome plated brass or copper... IDK. Thumbs Up!
Looks like kind of a jigsaw puzzle getting it apart and back together though.....
Great restoration on a good toy, what kind of rivits and rivit setter is that you are using?
semi tubular rivets and a Pintonka Rivet clamp
What size rivets did you have to get......I ask as I have 5 Mighty Dumps and 2 Mighty Loaders I need to rebuild (had to completely strip them due to rust) and ascertaining the correct rivet size to buy is becoming a pain.
Funny how even after the extensive renovation, the engine is still really loud.
It only needed body work, engine was in good shape
Outstanding as usual Martin! Can I ask, as you must have hours of footage with all the videos you make do you keep them all backed up and if so what are you using to back them all up ?a massive hard drive or something Cheers M
Yes, they are all on a 3TB hard drive
Awsome buddy i been wanting one of them rivet clamps but the shipping from usa is the killer you get them axl caps in uk be interested in knowing where from did you get rivets from pintonka too
I'm still trying to source rivets here in the UK These come with the clamp
Was the clamp from the website or did you find it on ebay
Wow!!!!!!!!
I was wondering maybe use a little Vaseline around the rim might stop the water or a small hole in the tire tread yo let it drip out
Excellent job!!
What sandblast media do you use? Im getting myself one and im after a good all rounder at a good price
I use Aluminium Oxide 60/80 grit

What about the windshield?
Is the lettering a sticker,decal,hand painted,or stenciled?
What about the windshield. Waterslide transfers
@@RetroHax did you restore, replace, or just omit the cab windows?
Amazing restoration. Do those 'end caps' that attach to the axles/pivot points have a specific name? I've been trying to source some without success. Thanks for sharing.
Depends where you are in the world. Push Caps, Top Hat Caps are the most common names.
Part numbers stamped on the back sides
