In today’s video, I will talk about Prince Gwanghae (Gwanghaegun 광해군). He was the 15th ruler of Joseon and was deposed in a coup d’état. He is one of two rulers to not receive a temple name. The other monarch who didn’t receive a temple name was Yeonsangun 연산군. Gwanghaegun was the second son of King Seonjo 선조 and born to a concubine: Lady Gong-bin 공빈 김씨.
During the Japanese invasions of Joseon, the Imjin War, Gwanghaegun was the de facto ruler. Gwanghaegun had an elder brother, Prince Imhae 임해군, who was incompetent and a younger brother, Grand Prince Yeongchang 영창대군, who was supported by the Lesser Northerners faction.
I will discuss the rivalries between the different factions 붕당 in Joseon at the time: the Hungu faction 훙구파, the Sarim faction 사림파, the split of the Sarim faction between the Western 서인 and Eastern 동인 factions and the further split between the Northern 복인 and Southern 남인 faction. The Northern faction also split between the Great North 대복파 and the Small North 소복파 factions. There were violent purges and a lot of tension during this time.
The tension between factions would make Gwanghaegun’s rule very difficult at times. Nonetheless, during his time, Joseon started the reconstruction of the country. He implemented the Daedong law 대동법 and the Dongui Bogam 동의보감, Principles and practices of Eastern Medicine, was published. It was written by Heo Jun 허준. Another famous book was published: The Story of Hong Gildong 홍길동전 written by Heo Gyun 허균. The reconstruction of palaces proved to be costly and changed public opinion of the king and led to his replacement by King Injo.
Injo was staunchly pro-Ming and anti-Manchu and this resulted in the two invasions of Joseon by Manchu forces. Joseon didn’t fare well and ultimately became a tributary state of the newly formed Qing dynasty for centuries to come. For this reason, many historians now think that Gwanghaegun’s pragmatic or neutral diplomacy might’ve prevented an invasion by the Manchu empire.

Prince Gwanghae would've been a better ruler than the imbecile king Injo who ends up ruining Joseon and killing his own son out of jealousy. Prince Gwanghae was a brave warrior prince who was more of a man than his inept father king Seonjo who fled like a coward during Imjin War. Such a tragic king who lost his mom and had no one to protect him. Seonjo should have died during the Imjin war so that he could become king.

Another Great Video and Thank you for giving us deep sight into one of the Joeson Kings....First let me speak on 2 things that made me understand well about Gwanghaeagun. 1.He faced Divided Polarizing Court...facing Adversity from being name Crown Prince to King. Doing his best to rebuild the Country after Imjin War while facing corruption and powerless to do anything. Worst part is the Faction that supposedly support Gwangheaugn had utmost contempt for Joseon Dynasty since its founding. 2.Inter Factional Fighting among the Political Groups was extreme that it continue for another 2 centuries......IF several factions could put aside their difference maybe Korea would not be where it is right as Divided.

While Gwanghae had some good ideas when it came to foreign policy or military matters, what cost him the throne-even more perhaps than his purges-was his poor handling of domestic issues (especially given this was only shortly after the Japanese invasions).
Still, he was an improvement on Yeonsan during the last two years of his reign, though that’s a very low bar.

These are the crimes Gwanghaegun was deposed for the Injo Rebellion, for betraying his loyalty to killing his son, deposing his mother, and killing his brother. He was effectively kicked out. Yeongchangdae was the brother of Gwanghaegun.
