Originally, didn't Parliament ban any missionaries coming into India? Also, I don't think any British troops ever vandalised any Hindu Temples...By that time, educated Europeans were completely in love with Pagan Classical culture, ..and doesn't Plato write somewhere that anyone damaging a shine to the Gods will spend forever in Tartarus? Perhaps the various Hindu groups thought they had more in common with these Europeans than Muslims...+ equally as many people died in sectarian religious wars in Europe (?) so unfortunately they were just behaving as ruthlessly abroad as they were to each other....the famine made the administrators look completely incompetent, so that wasn't intentional..and the East India Company was taken over., mainly(?) because of this....about the cartridges,I think any Brahmin would know cows were the sacrificial animal of choice in the Vedic Period, the religion's obviously changed a lot , (I'm vegan, so am not advocating a return to that), ...+During the Raj wasn't Hinduism 44% of the religious community , the largest group. And it's the same in the Commonwealth?..so perhaps the Christians were feeling a bit threatened by becoming a minority group, but hopefully nobody's bothered about that anymore. It was a very interesting talk, thank you. I definitely want to buy the book.
It could have been so different if it were not for traitors bought off. The Khalsa had the EIC army at it's mercy. It could have been wiped out as an effective fighting force. How history would have changed.
Sounds like a well researched book, but i would question the veracity of company records. I'm sure it wasn't the Americans who invented shady bookkeeping.. These records probably cast the company in a very good light.
This is an acomplished professional historian. He spent about 8 years of his live almost exclusively learning how to critically analyze unreliable primary sources, even more time if he went into the classics at some point. My point being that he has accounted for that, cross referenced a ton and discarded information that couldn't be properly verified. I can GURANTEE you that, it's most of his job.
Americans didn’t invent shady bookkeeping. You’re correct. We have a similar problem here. The British however have had an obsession with record keeping and documentation. It’s actually been one of their weapons in my opinion. They bury people with obsessive rules, record keeping, documents, procedures. Maybe not common British people but British empire administrators and corporations.
I love Dalrymples books . There is a huge difference between the east India company and modern US magafirms. The modern companies make goods to sell and develop technologies. The EIC was a criminal trading monopoly and drug cartel.
I thought the talk was generally very good and useful. However I feel that Dalrymple's comment to a question, in which he describes the grandparents of British people as having been involved in atrocities, is plainly incorrect and unnecessary. I expect this was simply said for effect and not meant to be taken literally, but given how well Dalrymple identifies precisely who is involved in the Easy Indian Trading Company, and how Darlymple is clearly concerned with how history is understood and the subsequent present day political implications, this comment detracts, is disappointing, clumsy, and vilifying.
@@RaitaNag The talk given by Dalrymple in this video and his book The Anarchy, which he references, both clearly explain the huge extent to which Indians were involved in the East India Company. Be it, working as soldiers for the EIC, administering the EIC and financing the EIC. What is more, is that Dalrymple alludes to attempts by Indian nationalists to reimagine the role of the EIC as simply "The British", so as to fit an anti-British narrative. I'm sorry, but your anti-British nonsense simply isn't supported by the history.
Traders have been the same throughout history and probably through out prehistory too . Look furthr back before you criticise rhe East India Company...
Oh yeah because socialists and governments have never killed anyone. The east India company was a government chartered monopoly from the beginning. It was an arm of the crown for its entire existence.
It's obvious from Mr darymple view that he is hurt by the fact that his books are not selling as much as it used to earlier because in india people are fed up of lies served by his fest promoted pseudo historians..
Hindu colonialists who justify the ongoing attacks on Muslims across India and Christians in Manipur, Odisha and elsewhere are nearly as bad as the racist British. India has to be and will be free of both, thugee.

_'Unregulated corporations'_ The moment he said that I knew I was in for some top-tier dipshittery. He didn't disappoint. Academics ought to choose and use their words precisely. Mr Dalrymple prefers to over-egg. All. that does is undermine his credibility.
It’s someone who’s strayed out of the echo chamber, got snowflake triggered by someone saying ‘unregulated corporations’, which allows them to ignore this human crisis caused by an unregulated corporation. Just think of the misery caused by going from producing 25-40% of world GDP to losing millions to famine, then look at all these posters saying ‘but we civilised them, gave them railways’. And it doesn’t matter one bit to the argument being right that a group of rich Indian bankers took part, funding and providing an army. It’s the SAME story, a few rich people bending society to their wishes to make them even more rich, while everyone else’s welfare is ignored.
@@FBDAGM2023 Who is arguing "But we civilized them, gave them railways" I don't see anyone voicing this sentiment, but I see plenty of people bemoaning this sentiment. Also, I think the measure of global GDP and India's share of it, is not very useful. Not least because of the development of huge new economies around the world, many parts of the world that were almost isolated from global trade became integrated into global trade due to new maritime trade routes. Also, India was involved in trade exploitation through the silk road for many centuries and perhaps India's high share of global GDP was unjust and unsustainable.
@@suburbanyobbo9412I’ve just looked through the posts and I agree that there is nobody posting here about the railways and civilising influence of colonialism. It must have been another video. My main point was about how people can be so dismissive of huge humanitarian disasters when it doesn’t fit their narrative. Apologies if I over-reached. Your point about the world GDP is also valid. But the issue being raised is that India was in some regions pre-industrial and these very wealthy regions could have possibly been the first to industrialise, but their wealth was taken away to facilitate another country’s industrialisation. This doesn’t mean they had to industrialise. We will never know. But it does add nuance to understanding what happened in theecolonial process.

this person seems to have researched very well but he is also talking a lot of bullshit about contemporary the Hindutva people may not be very articulate right now but given time i am sure left loonies won't be able to counter them on facts regarding Indian history, the only people manipulating it are the marxist historians. william seems to be a fact based person, but these marxist historians and professors will lie through their teeth even after knowing all the facts. Archeologists are always decades ahead in their pursuit of historical event as compared to historians. Maybe taj mahal claim is far fetched but i have been to qutub minar and gyanwapi, the historical injustice is as clear as day. the average indian does not know the real history and the blame is on the socialist governments of the past and marxist historians. every person who reads the real past of India comes to the conclusion that we have suffered 1000 years or even more of humiliation and now we must write our own history based on facts. This is why we are seeing young Indian writing excellent well researched books on medieval and british India.
History gets outdated all the time. Nothing really unusual about that. For example, the Soviet union collapsed in 1989, yet you're griping about Marxist historians. The overwhelming odds are that you, like most people, don't know much of anything, so shut your ideologically brainwashed yap.
It is a well known fact and Marxist historians have tried to hide nothing. It is just that they thought there is much harm than good in ruffling up the communal excesses of the past. Hence they stressed more on the stories of communal harmony.

@@Icetubexd Okay, I see he is in fact quite a distinguished historian. I thought he may just be a Tucker Carlson of the East India Company xD
Well now we just call government-subsidized drug cartels "the pharmaceutical industry"....
Why feeling guilty? So you should when you have Indian loot in museums
Fearsome lecture. Shameful history of a nasty episode of capitalism. The Chinese still remember the opium thing.

@@mavisemberson8737 great piece of whataboutism. This video is about the EIC so we critizise its atrocities
Unnecessary Modi bashing marred an otherwise superb rendition. Well done anyway. Don’t let these biases debase you, my dear sir.

@@borisnegrarosa9113he can’t

Very interesting comment ty
History gets outdated all the time. Nothing really unusual about that. For example, the Soviet union collapsed in 1989, yet you're griping about Marxist historians. The overwhelming odds are that you, like most people, don't know much of anything, so shut your ideologically brainwashed yap.
It is a well known fact and Marxist historians have tried to hide nothing. It is just that they thought there is much harm than good in ruffling up the communal excesses of the past. Hence they stressed more on the stories of communal harmony.
