    Im showing my girlfriend this after I was talking about the car I learned to drive in having a choke. She didnt believe me you had to do more than jump in and turn the key.
    Shes now making fun of me for being "Old" (I'm 38) and asking was it a shock going from horse and cart to cars.
    I swear you try and educate people and this is the thanks you get.

      Tell her the next time you guys get intimate that all you have to do is drop the pants and finish. You will immediately see her appreciation for letting things "warm up slowly" and also have a greater appreciation of things past which still did the job while making the operator/driver more aware of what they were doing. Just my opinion.

    I usually just start with choke out, gas pedal not really needed for start-up. Adjust the choke so that the engine has an ok idle. And while driving I push the choke in when I see that the oil temp is building. If the car struggle when increasing speed perhaps I pull out the choke for a minute and then push it back in again.

    Keep your foot off the throttle until it starts to warm up! If the choke/throttle are adjusted properly you shouldn't need to give it any more gas at startup.

    advice: put a medium spring in the choke holding it OPEN, while you crank the engine pull and release the choke ("pump it") it will start with a few pumps, after that just press the gas pedal to hold it above idle for a minute to get the oil going and warm up the coolant...

      Yes I was thinking exactly the same! My brother passed his test in 1994 when he passed he bought a pretty new car to start with and then went down the route of driving a few classics, they were all late 80s early 90s cars and every one of them had a choke, yet my mumhad a Car from 1991 and that didn’t! Perhaps it was because mums car was small but his were bigger like BMWs. I think he did really well because he’d not learned to drive with a choke nor watched anyone else with a choke car. Now I passed my test in my mid 30s (after work & health & other reasons making me not do it when I was younger) so I thought I’d like to catch up and learn how to use one too! I drive manual but I was shown how to drive an automatic the other day, so to also know how to use a choke I thought would be pretty useful!

    Nick Nick when I pull the choke fully out the car only runs smooth for like 3 seconds then starts to run really uneven so I have to push it in but the more I push it in the revs get too low and the car turns off so I just end up using the pedal instead of the choke to warm because it’s so unreliable.

    With a manual transmission do you have to depress the clutch as well to turn over the engine? Or can you just have it in N and use the gas pedal as shown

    • @enok90
      @enok90 8 лет назад

      Depends entirely on the car. Newer cars sometimes have a clutch safety forcing you to depress the clutch to start the car. Its so that you dont accidentally start your car in gear. But unless your car has that feature just leaving it in neutral should work no problem, and I don't think most cars that have carburetors and chokes will have a clutch safety.
      I can however say that in extreme cold (around -40 degrees) the gearbox oil in my old Volvo was so cold and viscous that even in neutral it would bog down the cold idling engine and it would stall if I let the clutch up the first few minutes. I'd have to sit and give it about 15% gas on full choke for about a minute or two before I could pull away. But this shouldn't be a problem for most people living in more temperate climates.

    • @gemdash62
      @gemdash62 6 лет назад

      Old kobota tractor of ours has the safety clutch, thing. Usually annoying as hell when you're trying to start the old thing when it's really cold (It's got a good 4000 hours+ on it), usually have to use starting fluid down the intake and have someone hold the clutch down (or bridge the starter).

    • @gemdash62
      @gemdash62 6 лет назад +4

      Usually flood the engine. Won't run properly.. or at all when hot.
      Prolonged partial use can wash the cylinder walls of oil, and cause excessive bore/ring wear.

    the whole story is crap. get your car to an experienced mechanic and let him adjust ignition and carburetor properly. Afterwards you can skip this show, just pull the choke, don't use the accelerator and crank. As the idle speed becomes faster you con can push back the choke step by step

    • @andresherrera2146
      @andresherrera2146 2 года назад

      Depends on how long it's been sitting since it was started and how cold it is outside....also depends on whether the carb and choke are operating properly or not. For most old vehicles, a half-pump is sufficient, or if it's less than 30 degrees outside, maybe one full pump.
