This is probably the best video on stick shifts I've seen so far. Much better explanation. So if you still didn't understand how manuals work from this video, then you're kinda screwed.
I’ve always thought that all the shifting was because they were down shifting and then upshifting again... and then downshift more for corners and up shift to get back to speed. Then again, it makes no sense during the drag races.
I bought my first car yesterday and it’s a manual and my dad is teaching me how to drive it. I first drove with my grandma and she gave me conflicting advice which my dad said is wrong but it’s still stuck in my head since it’s the first I heard. The hardest thing for me is reversing and starting after I get into 1st gear. I also have trouble easing off the clutch after I switch gears so it makes the ride kind of jumpy. But I’m sure this will all go away with practice. :)
Is it sad this taught me more about how to work on a transmission than my automotive class did? And this is a class where they taught how to take apart and put back together an entire engine
We really don’t double clutch when driving big rigs, since the transmission is unsynchronized you can actually float gears and not even use the clutch unless you have to make a full stop, a big rig is more forgiving than a regular car transmission or as mu brother would say “its semi-automatic” you just match the rpms to the speed and the gearshift pops right out and you push it into the next gear, clearly you can do this on a regular car but thats probably not that much of a good idea
Thanks a lot Bart! It makes so much more sense now. When you push the gear stick up or down, the hub moves either left or right depending whether you chose up for higher or down for lower of that side. This perfectly explains the specifically chosen |-|-| shape of the stick's range of positions for 5/6 speed transmissions!
Here's my makeshift thoughts at half past midnight: OK so the sleeves on the hubs connect to the teeth, of gears on the OUTPUT shaft. And the gear on that shaft gets it's power from DRIVE - COUNTER - OUTPUT. 1) CHANGING GEAR: So start with the driven gear. On the DRIVE shaft. The gear there is connected to one on the COUNTER shaft, and that rotates the whole shaft. Along the COUNTER shaft are other cogs, connected to gears on the OUTPUT shaft. It disengages the whole COUNTER shaft, and the wheels drive the OUTPUT shaft for a bit. When you squeeze the synchro with the sleeve, it is locked to the HUB and anchored to the OUTPUT shaft. So everything spins, right? That's a gear shift. I think. Power travels. 2) GEARS: FIRST gear gets the largest torque. It is slow and strong, the one on the counter shaft is faster and weaker. The gears on the OUTPUT shaft gradually get smaller. Usually, FOURTH gear is Direct Drive, or 1:1. The OUTPUT and INPUT shafts spin at the same speed. 3) RATIOS: A 2:1 ratio means the INPUT shaft spins 2 times, the OUTPUT shaft 1 time. Go from left to right being the delivery path. 3.1) OVERDRIVE: 5th gear can be an overdrive gear on the COUNTER shaft. It has a lower gear ratio. This gear turns less than the one on the OUTPUT shaft. Fuel economy increases. 6/7 can be double overdrive. Forward momentum means it doesn't need as much power. 4) REVERSE: Reverse is on the COUNTER shaft. It means the OUTPUT and COUNTER shaft spin in the same direction.
Double clutching just means you do this: Push clutch pedal. Shift out of gear into neutral Release clutch Push clutch again Shift into next gear Release clutch and Go.
@@thetman0068 i know but WHY? what are the advantages/ disadvantages... do you have to rev match? ...how do yo know the proper rpm for each gear? Ive known how to drive stick since i was 10 but nobody tought me this.
@thekidofpt1 don’t know if you’re still waiting for an answer, but the primary advantage of a dual clutch transmission or double clutching is that you will not feel as big of a shock in the car and the transmission will not take as much of a beating. Basically, since dual clutching makes it so that the change from gear to gear is not abrupt, there will be no shake n bake in the trans as there is not as much force suddenly transferred from gear to gear. This is why many modern sports cars are incorporating to dual clutching and that if you ride in early 2000s sports cars, you will be jostled around by the automatic single clutch transmissions. There's a metal ring with rectangular holes in it so a sensor can detect if the wheels are still rotating or not. Then the computer does wizardry and decreases the pressure applied to the brakes.
All four wheels have speed sensors so that while under heavy braking if any of the wheels are spinning slower than the rest ( by locking the brakes and skidding the tire) the computer recognizes a locked brake situation and will activate what is essentially and hydraulic pressure vibrator which will allow the wheel to begin spinning again but continue to apply the brakes. It’s simple but genius, especially on slick surfaces like ice and snow. It basically mechanically pumps the brakes 100 times a second to keep the wheels from locking up which helps stop the car much better.

It works by *Anti-locking* the *Braking System*
I learnt to drive a Manual Car and been driving since 4 years and my Dad has an Automatic Transmission Car and it's so easy to drive the Automatic.
