Manual car driver here - great explanation. I didn't and now I think next time I have to try to drive stick I have a chance of getting the hang of it without causing costly damage. the ones that had an issue with the heels either know how to drive (why you watching this unless to get a some extra secrets) or have a problem with their own masculinity.
I bought my Toyota 86 in manual, and my drive home from the dealership was the second time I had ever been in a manual car. Over a few months, with videos like this, it became second nature to me. I never took any lessons - you can do this too.
Wait, what? Are you in America? In England you have two types of licenses - manual & automatic, or automatic only. If you pass in an automatic, you're not allowed to drive a manual until you retake and pass your test in a manual.
@@dandandan01 In North America ( Canada AND USA) there's only one type of licence. You get to buy and drive whatever type of car transmission you want to, no matter with which one you learned how to drive in the first place.
I should be given a gold medal for "Save the manual" champion. I have not driven automatic car [as permanent car] in 23 years and currently own 3 MT cars for me and children. Wife drives auto but she drives MT really well.
I honestly found this video super helpful and easy to understand... Even though I've driven a manual car before, I never learned how to... But this is going to help me a lot on my learning experience... Thank you so much
I'm a single mom stuck learning manual by myself as I inherited a car after my old one was impounded. Its been a challenge (and embarassing) doing this by myself but I'm strangely proud of myself. I had so many people try to convince me to trade it for an automatic but I know nothing major is wrong with this almost 20 year old car and I'm too afraid to trade it for an unknown car that might be on the brink of major repairs. If it's in working condition, I might as well figure this out. But it definitely hasn't been easy doing it by myself. 😅 I think I've been accelerating too much through changing the gears.
I know I’m pretty late, hopefully you got the hang of it now. Anyway you aren’t supposed to add ANY throttle when up shifting. When you up shift you need to take your right foot completely off the gas, push the clutch all the way in, up shift, and then take the clutch out. When up shifting there’s no fancy clutch work, just push in, then let it out.
I watched this maybe three years ago with an automatic license but no manual experience as I had inherited a manual car. I had literally never been in the drivers seat before but this video genuinely was all I ever needed. I’ve now religiously drove manual ever since without any additional help or teaching this guide is actually sensational and now as I’m about to teach a friend how to drive manual his first step is to watch this start to finish.
btw, Scottish learner driver due a practical test next week but the skills should be transferable... so thanks ALOT for this video, figured that should be said as am already 4 minutes into the video and you've givin me so much information so far...
If this isn't the most fucking informative and easily digestible video on the topic, I don't know what it is. I've been trying to teach my girlfriend for a while now and even in person I might as well be speaking Latin. She watched this video about twice and now she understands everything just fine. Made the transition (no pun intended) to a manual transmission about 5 years ago. This video was tremendous in helping me learn. Just came back to rewatch and potentially relearn some tips and tricks, 5 years in. Wanted to say thanks to y'all for an excellent tutorial! And it's ✨free✨ 😂

I have watched this video a million times and I can honestly say this is the best video on how to drive a manual hands down on RUclips I am on day six on learning to drive my manual and this video has helped a lot. Thank you so much!
Excellent video! My first vehicle was a stick shift so I was forced to learn the hard way. This was a great refresher for me, my manual transmission camaro arrives tomorrow and this video definitely gave me a few pointers that will give me the confidence to pick up where I left off. 86 Honda Civic SI
Best thing for people to at least know, whether they are good or not at it. My job requires that you know how to drive a stick shift vehicle before they let you become a driver, even though 80% of the fleet is Automatic anyways. They can't risk you getting a stick truck and not knowing what to do! My first car was a stick ('88 Hyundai Excel) and I did suck at first going around the Winn Dixie parking lot at night but I got better and slowly go out on the streets and finally became a pro at it. Highly recommended skill here, you just never know!
My job doesn't require it but it's a necessity when you don't know if you're picking up a manual or automatic car from a dealer. I was mostly self taught on turbocharged cars which can be a bit difficult with all that power. It started from learning how to park & stop then getting on the street. Recently, I gotten on the freeway for the first time in a manual & it was scary because I didn't know how to downshift but i pulled it off. It's a really good skill to learn so that you don't seem useless in certain situations.
I watched this video a month ago stressed out, now I can AT LEAST get from point A to point B alone in a manual. Maybe not the prettiest or smoothest, but I can get there and it feels so good re-watching the video. Took a couple months off my brothers clutch but, I finally did it. lol.
Tell me about it lol. My brother bought a BMW for him to practice on and once he got the hang of it he taught me. He later on sold the car because he no longer needed as we both learned how to drive it. He then got a new 2013 mustang that is a manual and I'm sad because I havent driven a manual in a long time and my only practice is his new car. I want to practice again but I'm scared of burning his clutch. I'm looking into buy a mustang too that is also a manual but I need to practice or I could just burn that one too lol. Every now and then I like to take his car for a joy ride just so i can drive it manually.
@@everydaylife6528 when you "burn the clutch" it just means you're riding the clutch (or wearing it out) when you're not suppose to. For an example, when I first started when i would push the clutch in and i would hold it while driving as another form for braking. That's not correct especially when turning I would panic and keep my foot on the clutch half way in. When driving a manual car, you push it in to change gears but you're not suppose to hold it all the way in or half way when you're done shifting. You'll be fine and eventually you'll get the hang of it. You'll know you burned the clutch when you smell something funky. That just means to give the car a break. It also takes a long time to wear it out, so dont think you'll burn it right off the bat(can cost a couple hundred or thousand dollar to fix tho.)
Hi Joe - great video and well filmed. I like the split screen to show students how to shift and all the components of learning to drive a manual transmission. And the emphasis on clutch control is a MUST. Without clutch control it is difficult for students to "move forward" in learning how to drive a manual car effectively. And you are right, it is easier to drive a newer manual car. Two things: 1) the dead pedal was adopted from racing. It is, as you mention to rest your foot on, but also to post off with your left foot when doing complex manoeuvres. The purpose is to help hold you in the seat when the vehicle is going crazy. As I tell students - hard to control the vehicle if you're not in the seat. 2) All gear selectors rest between 3rd & 4th gear when the transmission is in neutral. That will help students shift the gears and know where they are in the gear box, although most modern vehicles will have a display on the dash. Thanks for the video. All the best, Cheers Rick
This is the perfect guide! It covers everything you need to know while daily driving a manual. It might just be the first guide that covers parking too! As a younger person who really wants a stick shift for a daily but has no access to learn on one, this video helped me understand everything a lot better and prepared me better for the road
28:55 Be careful guys, on some older cars when you put the gear in reverse and turn the engine and electric off, your reverse lights might still be active, which will drain your battery.
@@AntiNoobDefence Always leave it in gear(preferably 1st gear) with the emergency brake on. That's the rule of thumb for sure especially if you're on a hill. You never know if the emergency brake goes or someone fucks around and cuts it. Then your super fucked. Better to leave it in gear so you know it's not moving anywhere.
@@AntiNoobDefence Hell nah if you’re on a hill and your parking brake gives out bye bye car! Put it in reverse if you’re facing downhill and 1st if you’re facing up. A little kindergarten girl was killed a few years ago where I live because the parking brake on an older pickup gave out and hit her. Always do the smart, safe thing. Even if it isn’t preferred.
Been learning standard recently and have only stalled once - on my second day learning - my father was testing how I do with distractions and I popped it into third instead of first when taking off. Learning first gear was a breeze for me (thanks Vin) For now, the only thing I have problems with is down shifting. Already super fun to drive and I can't wait to make my man Paul proud lol.
For starting on a hill you can also stay on the break, release the clutch until you hit the biting point, let go off the brake (since at the biting point you can't move backwards in first gear [there's actually a mechanism behind that]) step on the gas and kindly release the clutch completely. That's how it's taught in Germany, we don't use the handbrake anymore because it's getting replaced with the electric one.
If you have the biting point you definitely can move back in certain cars, especially the one I'm learning in. You have to make sure it's a deep bite to move forward (clutch up slightly more)
My first car was a '70 VW Beetle in Puerto Rico and my handbrake didn't really work at all. Needless to say... steep hills (which were everywhere) were extremely annoying.
I've driven manual trucks my entire 16 driving years but this came up in my recommendations. I'm watching it anyways because it's so well put together and this guy is hilarious. I died when he showed he had a heel on 🤣
I learned manual by guessing. And I guessed right.... after the first 3 guesses... but it was a 1966 mustang I had just built. And used the old clutch. I ended up getting a new one soon after since it was worn out anyway.
Around 2020 - 2021, i was learning a manual and watching this video. You've really helped me a lot. There wasn't really anyone to teach me in person thanks to this video I've come to love manual cars.

@Mass Debater most american thing i've ever had to read. @@michaelPerez-fi5uh yeah! When I first got my car I had my dad drive it back and from there I spent three three days just trying to get a hang of it in my neighborhood and by the fourth day I was on public roads. I did have previous practice a year or two ago with my neighbors car so I did have an idea of how it would feel but I’d suggest practicing around your neighborhood first.

I bought my Toyota 86 in manual, and my drive home from the dealership was the second time I had ever been in a manual car. Over a few months, with videos like this, it became second nature to me. I never took any lessons - you can do this too.
motomusiq wait did you do your driving license on an automatic?
So i guess ill get a 19 challenger rt in a manual.
Just did the same thing last week!
This is how we save the manual folks. Driving a manual is not so bad and elevates the driving experience.
I should be given a gold medal for "Save the manual" champion. I have not driven automatic car [as permanent car] in 23 years and currently own 3 MT cars for me and children. Wife drives auto but she drives MT really well.

It’s more fun driving a manual. I suck at it (still practicing) but it’s still funny when I fail miserably 😭.

Hope it worked out
I know I’m pretty late, hopefully you got the hang of it now. Anyway you aren’t supposed to add ANY throttle when up shifting. When you up shift you need to take your right foot completely off the gas, push the clutch all the way in, up shift, and then take the clutch out. When up shifting there’s no fancy clutch work, just push in, then let it out.
@@TaikaJamppa DO add gas when you down shift 👍🏼 Just not on upshift
I feel like you can't go too hard on the accelerate with a petrol anyway. If you drive a Diesel car, that's a different story however
@@dominicv964 when you down shift can't you just apply it the same way as when you up shift that's what I do.

Acc0rd79 how did u get to the parking lot 🤔

@@whitesox2624 burning his clutch!! What does that mean? I hope I don't do it to my friend's car. How can it happen. I am new to driving..
@@whitesox2624 thanks for helping me with the explanation.
@@everydaylife6528 you got it! :)

28:55 Be careful guys, on some older cars when you put the gear in reverse and turn the engine and electric off, your reverse lights might still be active, which will drain your battery.
Should always leave it in neutral when parked anyway lol
@@AntiNoobDefence That is not true. You should leave it in first gear or reverse when parking.

As an experienced Manuel driver. I say you are the best teacher for learners.
Guys focus on everything he says
That's THE Perfect video!
