    This is perfect, looking forward to more form the "how to create archival artwork on a budget" from you! 😊
    There are too many artists showing people "cheap ways" of doing things but they're not archival and they never mention that!

    Excellent video. This hit on a quite a few things I have struggled with over the years. I have to say I will never understand the people that want to make rules about how to make art. Like don't use a ruler, don't use a grid, don't use a solvent, you have to use this brand of supply only, no erasers, no blending stumps and any other "rules" they can come up with. The end results is what is important, and if you can use a tool to make the process a little easier or quicker it isn't cheating. Plus there are those of us that have issues with our hands for example that burnishing just isn't an option, then there are other ways we can accomplish the same results without breaking down our hands.

    You inspired me to try harder :) Since your video I've spent easily 9 hours sketching a zinnia in a vase. Uffda! Petals are a puzzle! But using your technique of seeing shapes instead of petals really helped break it down into manageable little bits! Thank you so much!!!!! Your advice has been wonderful! I live in a rural area without much for art classes etc. I sooooo appreciate your videos, thank you again!

    I just recently found your channel. I've been watching your graphite and colored pencil videos. This was so helpful. I am just starting out with graphite and colored pencil. I started with coloring books, then moved to watercolor and have recently been branching out into colored pencil and graphite. I will definitely be trying this. I did take your advice and do a colored pencil rose. I spent about four hours on it and was really happy with my first try. Thanks for teaching us beginners.

    There are a few time that a video gets my full attention and this is one of them. I have heard so many so called tips on shading but there are other artist that state the complete opposite. This gives out clear and Precise instructions some I knew, some I didn’t and others I had no clue and left me speechless.

    I just drew a rose yesterday as my first attempt at something other than basic shapes that I've been using to learn and practice using shading to make it look 3D. Since it came out great I'm going to try this as a step up in difficulty.

    I've been struggling with getting smooth shading for a long time. This is just the video I needed. I really don't get those people who don't want us to use erasers. In addition to the effects that can be achieved, another major purpose of an eraser is to remove lines the artist doesn't like. I guess we're either supposed to get everything right the first time, or too bad for us.

    You are so great! Certainly as an artist, but also as a teacher. I appreciate all the information you give newbies, no patronizing, just super helpful nitty-gritty. Thanks for that! I cannot find the link to access the gray scale version of the rose that you mentioned. It is almost midnight ...so my eyes aren't as sharp. My little dog has already curled up in my bed .... on my pillows. Yikes!

    I had the no eraser rule in art courses that lasted 2,5 months each. This rule helped me with better seeing the subject/ object and transfering it to paper, but that's just me. I rarely use the eraser besides adding highlights.

    Thank you so much for this. I've never learned how to shade with graphite and just started to shade with blending stumps. Your explanation of the different graphite uses are excellent. I always wondered about the hard spots on pencils. I run into it slot with Colorase pencils. This is a great practise for improving my tonal values in my paintings. Thank you so much! 🌹✍️

    Thank you for this! I decided this week to go back to basics, and found a great plant picture to use as a reference for graphite. I don't have any glassine or tracing paper so I was wondering if something like wax paper would work? The waxy side away from the art of course. I'm not worried about it being archival so it may not matter.
    Another thing you mention is about using a light hand- I don't remember *ever* being taught about that before, and it's so basic that I'm floored it never came up! So now-and also because arthritis and fibro- I have a super heavy hand that's really hard to correct. I purchased some foam grips shaped like eggs that fit over pencils and they have changed my life! They're cheap and come in a 12 pack, I found mine on amazon. They fit a lot of paint brushes too. Do you have any tips that help people with these kinds of difficulties?

    • @bimbo6345
      @bimbo6345 5 лет назад +1

      Lisa has fibro and a bit of arthritis so that's where the light handed tip originated. I have a similar pain in my wrist so using a light hand until later layer helps with that.

    • @shannonmondragon2888
      @shannonmondragon2888 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I remembered she did a video about that. That's why I hoped she might have more tips, because she's such a great artist and that she manages to work through the pain is so inspiring to me. I wish I could have a light hand but I'm beginning to think my hands no longer work that way, so I cheat by using the egg squishy things.

    Good tips. Having not done much art in decades, this helped. And best reference photo can bee seen on your video at 8:10. That's what I used. Also, After struggling with the hand-held sharpeners, and not getting results I wanted, I went to my crank-style one. This is pretty old, but it still sharpens pencils really well. Just wanted to put that in there. Don't know if they still sell them.

    I don’t understand why wax paper cannot be used instead of glassine? It slides really nicely over my colouring pencil work.
