There are always points in your videos where the thing you're doing goes through the following stages:
    1) Oh, a sketch of a bird or something.
    2) Oh, a crayon scribble of a bird.
    3) Oh, a drawing of a bird.
    4) Oh, a bird.
    Amazing stuff, just beautiful.

I personally count glassine paper as a must & sometimes you can find glassine treat bags at a craft store or with donuts in a grocery store to get one out of the case

Hopefully I can get some of the polychromos for Christmas lol. For now even the 12 count are out of my budget. I got prismacolors last year at Christmas and I just can't seem to do anything without them breaking the only thing I haven't tried yet is baking them mostly because I am afraid I will mess them up worse. So I have colored pencil work on hold for now. I do have bristol board instead of drawing paper, I also have a few toned papers from strathmore. Other than the polychromos and glassine I basically have all of the other supplies.
I did want to add I have my paint thinner in a little glass jar exactly like that. I unintentionally tested the seal shortly after getting it, as it got turned over on my desk and I didn't notice it for a bit. When I did finally see it the desk was still dry and only the inner seal was a little wet, so I definitely recommend those. I think I got mine at Michaels for 89 cents.

Lisa, you've just saved me a ton of money!
I've had this set of the Polychromos for years and just thought there is no way I could make this limited palette work (I'm a graphite person first and foremost, and don't know much about colors and blending to begin with), so if I ever wanted to "really get into" colored pencil, clearly I'd have to get more colors first... Now I know I don't have to! And will learn more about colors and color mixing if I don't as well! It's a win-win!
I'm so excited! 😅😁 Thanks, Lisa!

It would be super helpful to see like 20 seconds of real time for each major area like the branch, feathers, and beak to see what technique you use for different textures like hatching, smooth small ovals, etc.

does gambar work for polychromos also? and...i know you've answered this in the past, but if you would repeat it... what is your recommendation for handheld pencil sharpeners? by brand pencil their offering, or is there one or two that work with prisma type and polychromos type pencils and watercolors that do not tear up the wood or color? is there a way to sharpen or keep sharp a blade longer? are there replacement blades? are battery better than hand held or electric? i could open a flea market store with frustrated but spendy items that don't work for me... and i so appreciate this entire video. what awesome tips and examples. i could finally keep up with each example and see what you do from start to finish. it's taken me a while to learn about surfaces and color and tools... i've got way more tools than skill, but i now understand investing in quality in the long run is cheapest when i don't use what doesn't work. Thank You!!

I want to find solution for some of the darkest areas and deep blacks for the contrast with the graphite..I know about carbon but what besides that i can you along with the graphite?

Oh thank you! I have been waiting for this video ever since I asked for this in a livestream of yours! I was longing to use my 12 polychromos (albeit I do 72 prismacolors😅) Oh Lisa, you're the best!
I had a doubt whether I could use the Strathmore 400 series drawing paper for colored pencil portraits? Also, are the 200 series drawing and sketch paper good for beginner colored pencil drawings ?
Thanks a lot Lisa for your guidance and inspiration!

I'm not sure on the 200 series since I've never tried it. As long as it's acid free, nothing wrong with giving it a chance! I found out what I liked by trying lots of things I didn't like :P

Learning so much from you lisa! My drawings have improved tremendously so thank you for that! I was curious if you have heard of or used the u.s art supply odorless thinner? Im assuming its the same as the others you mentioned . i just bought it because gamsol wasn't available. Haven't used it yet though.

Great video. I have not been able to get the white highlights on the feathers that you do. You appear to be detailing the white after you have done several layers. I'm very much a beginner, and it seems adding a light color over top of a darker color does not allow the light color to show up. any suggestions?

You are so awesome, Lisa! I’ve learned so much from you, and mostly been doing graphite and charcoal the past few yrs(recently sold my first commission), and have been finally wanting to branch out into colored pencil, but the cost is much for me. I definitely would like to start small and learn color theory well. Would you mind sharing where you found the small glass jar with seal for your OMS? I’ve tried a plastic one before, when I was messing around with blending crayola pencils, and the OMS caused my container to warp and shrivel, crazy! It’s like the OMS caused a reaction with the plastic. Maybe it was the particular brand of container that I used. Thought I may try a glass one instead. Thank you!

Beautiful ! When using 12 set, do u use some colors more often than others, that u have to keep replenishing those specific colors. Can u varnish inktense with grammar? Thanks.

  • @LM-df9eq
    @LM-df9eq 3 года назад

Ok, probably a dumb question, but here goes. After blending with OMS, do you rinse your brush, or just wipe it off? I've painted with oils and watercolors, and always clean my brushes before the next color...

@lachrifineart I been trying to find out if there are non-toxic/less toxic alternatives to odorless mineral spirits for blending colored pencils. And found the following on Chelsea Classical Studio' website FAQ page:
Q: ARE THERE ANY OTHER USES, BESIDES OIL PAINTING, FOR YOU LAVENDER SPIKE OIL?
A: Besides its use in oil painting, lavender spike oil essence is used in perfumes, soaps, aromatherapy, and other holistic medicinal practices. Also, we're told that it is excellent for blending colored pencils!
Could you please make a review/demo video of this product?
    Thank you!
Love your channel with its aweome reviews and tutorials. This video on just using twelve colored pencils os AWESOME. I am starting with colored pencils and from my research I want the full sets of the Polychromos/Luminance/DerwentLightfast pencils but I can't justify their prices since I am just starting out in the medium. But now I now I can just start with a smaller set 😃
Also, can I mix different colored pencils say mixing all three Ploychromos, Luminance and the Derwent Lightfast on a single piece since some are wax based and others are oil based?

Where I come from it is very hard to find as many art products as in places like the United States or elsewhere, so materials have been a really big issue for me. I have never even heard of odourless mineral spirits around here, and it honestly seems that without having OMS you can never get a good colour pencil painting, especially since you seem to use OMS in everything. Or is there another way I'm not aware of?

I find it so interesting how all of us are so different. I really like my Poly’s and the more I use them, the more I do. However, I LOVE my Prismas and that is what I find so interesting….why is it that some people, including artists like yourself, who know how to layer, even with Prisma, gets wax bloom (and yes, I know you no longer use them, I remember when you came out with the video that you had given up on them!) ….then, there are others (myself included) who are not artists in the sense that we do our own artwork, but who maybe are just “colorists” of other people’s artwork, who can get 20, 25+ layers (without using a blending solution) and not get wax bloom…even after the image is 4-5 years old and hasn’t been sprayed to prevent it? Doesn’t make sense to me! Maybe that is just one of those “wonders” we run into in this world we live in?
