  • Welcome back! Here's an introduction and pitch for Licanius to help you decide if it's the right series for you.
We have amazing magic systems, air-tight plots, and the most perfect puzzle of time travel! Though I'll also discuss weaknesses like flat characters and rushed romances.
This series gets compared to the Wheel of Time for it's quality and style. Though I would also compare it to Malazan for it's complexity!
    Enjoy!

I’m really enjoying James islington’s writings. I loved the licanius trilogy. The final chapter of book 3 was one of the best I ever read. There were some short comings but there were enough good things that I was able to ignore the bad.
It took me a bit to get into will of the many but it was really rewarding after getting through the first few chapters.
    I hope he keeps writing!

I loved Licanius. I just finished the series after picking up the first book on a whim and I am shocked at how well time travel is handled in the series. I personally didn’t have issues with the characters, but I will admit that Wirr’s story was distinctly less interesting than the other 3 to me. Ending chapters +epilogue brought me to tears

Brilliant breakdown as always, man. I used to think the character work was weak too, but then Philip Chase and crew put out a video a bit recently on the different types of character work, and I realized it's just a matter of being biased to my preference as opposed to what's needed for the story's sake. Also 100% agree, the ending is absolutely worth reading through all 3 books for. This series is nuts!

I love how you always manage to talk me into checking out a series that I had kind of written off! I am a character driven reader through and through, but I'm getting better at putting those criticisms aside to just enjoy the story. Not every author can be Robin Hobb lol. And considering my troubles getting through WoT, something that shares some similarities but isn't quite as hefty would be nice to try!
That being said, I plan on starting with Will of the Many, so I'm really looking forward to that video! :)

I've been waiting for this video. I DNF'd book 1 halfway through last year. My only DNF of 2023. You may have just convinced me to try again.
I bought it because it was published by Orbit, who have consistently released content that I like. They are my A24 of the book world.

    Great review.
I would like to add that the villains of the story have the most believable backgrounds out of nearly any fantasy story I have read. They are people that are doing potentially terrible things for reasons that they believe are good. Fighting for a cause that they believe in, even if it makes them evil in other's eyes. I am reminded of the Wheel of Time if the Forsaken had proper motivations (I joke, but just a little bit).

    • @cronkthebookguy
      @cronkthebookguy  Месяц назад

Great point! I avoided talking about the villains because spoilers, but kinda regret it now! You're right, they had excellent motivations. Plus the friendship they have with each other is quite nuanced.

I read this earlier this year, and didn't think much of it to begin with; as you say, it was rather generic. But once the time travel elements crept in, I started to see its merits. I love time travel stories where time is fixed. I felt this series has some elements in common with the Legacy of Kain games, in that it deals with time travel in a fixed timeline, and what that means for fate and free will (and yes, I know that Legacy of Kain does mess with the timeline, but the fact it even happens is a major plot point). They both also have scenes very early on that you know are visions from the future that aren't resolved until near the end of the final entry to the point that you wonder if the author has forgotten about it.
Honestly, the plotting here is very very good, and I do not feel bad by being able to predict the ending. MAYBE SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD. All the pieces were there, and by about halfway through the final book, I began to wonder about a certain meeting between two characters, and whether we knew everything, or if we were only given a certain point of view. The more I thought about it, the more I became convinced I was right. My theory fit within the rules of the world. There's nothing wrong with readers being able to predict the ending like this, no need to pull something out of your arse to ensure readers are 'surprised'. It's like a whodunnit. Once Hercule Poirot gets everyone into the drawing room, you should have enough information to solve the mystery yourself.

I love this series. It's got phenomenal twists. I just think it really could have used better editing. Like the word "hesitated" is used multiple times per page and it sucked me out of the story sometimes. Also "inclined head" and "companionable silence."

I almost dismissed the recommendation because i consider myself as a character driven reader first, so boring or plain characters are not my jam. But, thinking about it, that's not true. Yes, character can be a vehicle for themes or worlbuilding. One of my favorite books, Babel by RF Kuang does just that. So, i will put this trilogy in my TBR! Ty as always. PD: Green Bone Saga, YEAH, I hope you would like it. One of my favorite trilogies and the character building and dynamics are a masterclass.

    • @cronkthebookguy

I read book one but the characters really irritated me. I also had a very hard time investing in the characters and feeling like their friendships were real. I absolutely put down this series after book one.
I would reconsider reading the next two books if the story is really worth it. You usually don’t lead me astray lol
I really want you to read Sun Eater lol. Hopefully it can move up on your TBR 😊 Talk about spectacular character work. And it has beat Red Rising as my favorite sci-fi. I would love for it to reach a wider audience.

Licanius is one of these, I've heard of it and followed enough to know about it without having read it and this clip was the nail in the coffin for me, definitely gonna pick up a hard copy of 'shadow', well done m8, cheers from Ontario Canada, also on a sidenote I read the dragons blade over Christmas after watching your video on it and was not disappointed, well done again 🎉
