Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Valkyrie Fighter Chronicles!

  • I'm really running out of titles for Macross videos... Well, I stumbled upon this game. Never heard of it before, somehow. This is an older PS2 game, but this is actually really good... A third person shooter as per usual of 3D Macross games. But the thing is it's almost more like a VF simulator.
    Battroid is the basic third person shooter form that has lock on and can shoot down missiles. It doesn't shoot missiles itself, though. It's really cool because it can slide and glide around, and when locked on, you fly around enemies in a spherical axis. It's cool because of the way it controls and the mech actually moves its body around to fly around and keep facing the enemy. The toll of gravity and intertia feels more realistic, too. Fighter mode has an Easy and Normal setting... Easy is probably 'flat' controls where you just steer left and right without rolling, but I switched to Normal flight controls that rolls and yaws much like you'd expect of a plane, without ever using Easy. This form doesn't lock on, so you have to aim your plane manually. Now, gerwalk... This game pulled a one of a kind.
    Gerwalk is, of course, the signature transformation of the Macross series, the half-breed of a plane and a mech. That's exactly how it feels here. By pressing nothing, your VF will simply hover in the air. X and Triangle start thrusting you forward or backwards, respectively. Shoulder buttons can thrust you to strafe to either side. The right analog stick up or down lets you freely control your altitude. Left and right, and the gerwalk rolls to the side like a plane does to turn. In short, the entire three axes are completely yours to control. There's so much freedom and it's amazing. Like fighter mode, you also have to aim manually to face your enemies. Gerwalk does have a drawback, though, it's actually very sluggish to reach max speed, and drifts like crazy, so you can't just zip around twitching anywhere.
    This is just the first mission of the game... And yes, the launching sequence (and midway cutscene) doesn't match the mech in the game for some reason. Mission 1 already was really fun... It's not like some of the other games that just add rectangles randomly and call it a city, and everything takes place in the skies above anyway so it doesn't matter. Nah, this game actually has you weaving through a city under gravity restrictions and limited boost, so you better be a good pilot to not just shoot walls and crash into buildings. By the way, the buildings can actually be destroyed, too. I tried not to. And that missile camera, I kinda like that.
    Here I was excited for my imported Macross 30 on Christmas, and I found this to ease my soul 'till then!

    How playable is this game for someone who doesn't read or speak Japanese? I mean, is it hard to understand what you're supposed to do in each level, or is it just a case of shooting everything that moves?

    • @IndigoMecha
      @IndigoMecha  9 лет назад +7

      It's pretty easy, the menus are even in English. It's basically just shooting everything in sight, though a few extra objectives sneak in in some missions. I failed those once or twice, but it's easy to catch on to what you have to do.

      We're legally not allowed to. Harmony Gold owns the distribution rights and are sitting on them.

    • @PS3PS2fan
      @PS3PS2fan 5 лет назад

      Justin Jacobs I don’t know if this is relevant or not, but I read on the internet about Harmony Gold and Macross, and what caught my eye is that Harmony Gold’s rights to Macross would expire in 2021 due to being found partially/fully breaching the original contract with Tatsunoko. I don't know if this would have an effect on the franchise’s future but lets not get our hopes up too soon.
      That information for the above paragraph is according to this link: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Anime/Robotech

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 5 лет назад +1

      You would STILL have to deal with Tatsunoko for the international rights to the original SDF Macross and Tatsunoko is NOT exactly on speaking terms with Big West which controls the rights to the rest of the Macross franchise in Japan.
      Tatsunoko's rights only apply to the ORIGINAL 1982 Macross TV series which they were a co-production/co-financier partner on. The young studio they partnered with, Studio Nue, foolishly DIDN'T include a clause in their agreement/contract/promisory note with Tatsunoko that the older, established company (Tatsunoko) WOULDN'T have the SDF Macross international distribution rights past so many years so in Japan court it was established Tatsunoko has PERMANENT international distribution for the original Japanese Macross TV series.
      It's screwed up but that's how it worked out in the 1990s when Big West (the financial backer of Studio Nue) took Tatsunoko to court.
      Of course, Tatsunoko took advantage of the situation! It enabled them to sell other shows to HG that DIDN'T do as well... Tatsunoko has made more money off of Southern Cross and Mospeada being PART of Robotech than they ever did when those series originally aired in Japan!
      Note that this DOES NOT mean Tatsunoko has rights to any other Macross properties including the 1984 feature film, Flashback 2012, or ANY Of the sequel shows from Macross II onwards. The rights to all other Macross animated properties and spin-offs still belong to Big West/Studio Nue. They (Big West and Studio Nue) co-own the Macross franchise.
      ***
      ***
      Macross II and Macross Plus WERE licensed in the West for a long time and both were released on DVD in the early stages of the DVD anime in the West.
      The first Macross series that wasn't licensed was Macross 7 but that was supposedly passed on because of music clearance issues which have nothing to do with the situation with SDF Macross.
      There are too many people that blame the situation completely on Harmony Gold and, YES, HG has mishandled the situation for many years BUT there are two things to remember -- 1) the rights issue was ALREADY screwed up in Japan and mishandled by Studio Nue AT THE START; 2) very few people in the West would have been aware of Macross as early as the mid-1980s if not for Robotech. They weren't licensing and releasing anime on home unedited like they began to in the late 1980s and even the commercial US anime video market really didn't take off until the mid-1990s. I've seen MUCH WORSE EDITS BY FAR of older anime than Robotech (1985), before and after that series originally aired. I'm talking about shows that had entire episodes and story arcs eliminated completely on top of the name changes and music alterations that drive the most anal-retentive fans up the wall. No, the Macross storyline is still intact in Robotech and the episodes ARE in the right order. The characterizations are CONSISTENT with Macross, too. 95% of the original show is still there in the first 36 episodes of Robotech -- it's only the crazies and people who don't understand the basics of storytelling that believe they changed the storyline entirely. There was a LOT LESS changed in Robotech than what was done with Voltron, Tranzor Z/Mazinger Z, and the DiC version of Sailor Moon. You want to see BAD EDITS, look at the first two localizations of Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets, G-Force) or Card Captors. What was done in Robotech and Star Blazers was mild by comparison.

    This one plays similarly to Macross VFX or VFX-2

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 5 лет назад

      It's MUCH better than either of the VFX games.
      Those were horrible!
      I had the first one and couldn't believe how crappy it was. Poor controls, bad level design, junky MIDI music instead of CD-quality red audio.
      The PS2 game is by far the best Macross game based on the TV show or Movie anybody's released on console.
      It's better than the sidescroller they released on the Sega Saturn and PS1. That game was inferior to the SNES/SFC Scramble Valkyrie sidescroller! The Saturn/PS1 game was nowhere near what the 32-bit consoles were capable of.
