Thank you! A little bird just showed me where the seeds are. I started my first two in an aero garden to get a head start. The trick was to use the littlest seeds in the pack for the aero garden and now they are giant! 🌻🌻🌻 💖✨

Heck of a lot easier if you hang n dry em before shucking, better quality seeds too if they're bone dry

There are different types of sunflowers actually. Some are small and some are what's called "mammoth".crazy huh?
there are different kinds! Dwarfs are small and better fit for a flower garden, while mammoths are tall and most suitable for harvesting and eating seeds

Very cool. Those are huge! You could also put a wire through the stem and hang it in a cool, dry place in a paperbag, they'll drop into the bag in a week or so. Cool to do it with Mom though.

So nice to share this with your son! I grew my first Mongolian Mammoths this summer, and I'm ready to harvest. The tallest was 15' and the shortest was 10' and it was amazing to start from seeds, watch them sprout and grow a few inches and plant them in their newly dug bed next to the back fence. After losing a few to curious critters, they started to grow rapidly, literally inches a day. My neighbors enjoyed the surprise when they rose above the fence and began to bloom. Now their little boy wants to grow some next year, and I can't wait to make a Sunflower Kit for him for Christmas. Pass the joy on...

I found this video really relaxing, the sounds, your voices, especially the kid's, and the process! Here in Spain we call them "pipas" /peepas/ and during summer we could eat thousands of them, toasted with salt, or with many different flavours.

Our sunflowers were that big too but then they fell cuz of high winds. Before they were fully ripened, our chickens ate the flowers 😂

We had a sunflower patch in our yard when I was a kid, i used to take the seeds when they were ready to fall off and plant them in pots. It was the most fun I had as a child

You should harvest when the back portion of the flower turns yellow.then keep drying in the sun that yellow base to sun. After two days drying beat with stick all the seeds will fall down.

My scalp and skin is itchy right now but I still admire the sight since I'm an avid sunflower seed snack lover! They taste great and are highly nutritious, too.
My cockatiels would have had a field day! One of my neighbours is growing sunflowers. During a walk with my birds one afternoon, I put them in their carrier up to the sunflower and they serenaded it for 5 minutes straight! It was precious to say the least.
Could you not just wash the head of the plant before starting? To get rid of any unwanted critters, just wondering.
