    We grow Mammoth Sunflowers (grey stripe) in southwest Ohio. They look great along the fence line. Started with 2 packets last year and those 50 gave me enough seeds to feed the chickens thru the winter and plant again this year. This year's seeds are going to be next years photo field. We have a few that were all black heads, a couple that look all white but most are still the grey stripe.

    I always wondered how this works. I live in Florida and we don’t have sunflowers, except in pictures when they never have the seeds on them. So it’s so interesting so see them with seeds. I always knew that logically they had seeds somehow, especially because I have seen sell sunflower seeds sold in stores, but I never knew the mechanics of it. Like how the seeds come off the plant.

    4 Kids & a Farm, thanks for your video! Would you consider: digging up the soil where you planted your sunflowers and placing some of your chopped up stalks about 3-4 feet deep to decompose and provide some additional content for your soil? The flowers will also go into that area quite nicely either as mulch or as part of a 2 feet deep addition to the soil?

      Currently, my sunflowers all border the entire back fence line.... one of them has a singulat stray cucumber vine that travelled to the sunflowe stalk and tendrilled itself to it! now that cucumber vine is tall than I am lol 🤷

    We used to walk past sunflower plants many taller than us when we were kids on our way to play softball or kickball in the field across from our house. We never knew you could eat them... just thought they were pretty plants. We did though have a fence in the back yard that had blackberries growing on them and a plum tree with a strawberry patch underneath that kept us fed all summer long. Glad I found your channel. PS: I thought raw was better (certainly not tastier for me anyway than roasted).

    wow, an American that uses cups & tablespoons in measurements! That's awesome, I could actually follow the recipe :)
    Meanwhile, I didn't know sunflowers needed pollinating. I've got a bunch of them nearly flowering now down under, but no bees, so very glad I watched this & learnt about that, guess the paint brush I've been using to hand pollinate cucumbers is going to get some more work on the sunflowers. Very glad I learnt that though, otherwise I would have had none! (I mean they still have to get through the cocky swarms, but I have them under chicken wire I've got across the top of my garden to keep the wild turkeys out, so fingers crossed that will keep the cockies out too, if not, I'll get many hours of entertainment as the cockies figure out how to get under it)
    Nice video :)

    We grow Sunflower for both ourselves and small livestock. The Rabbits, Chicken, and Quail all love the seeds. Easiest feed ever. No processing. Just toss 'em a full head and they'll go to town.

    I use long-handled garden loppers instead of a machete'. The kind with a three or four inch cutter. You can pick-up stalks with it, toss them around, chop them up, and keep it all at arms distance plus two feet away.

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  2 года назад

      Your right rick...the loppers are more safe.

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 года назад

      I use loppers like that too, but I'm watching this & thinking the machete looks much easier, single handed operation to cut, leaving your other hand free to manage the plant & machete is lighter than those loppers too, especially when the loppers are extended, so centre of gravity is a long way away from your body & without a free hand to pull the heads down, that's what I'm thinking I'd need on tall sunflowers

    its so funny when the turkey pooped while eating 😆 anyways, me and my dad wanted to harvest sunflower seeds but we didnt know how, thanks for telling us

      "Dad and I" wanted. You are the subjects of the sentence=subjective case, not the objective case = Dad and me. The turkey pooped on dad and me. The turkey is the subject and you are the objects of the sentence. Kapish?

    Question - does the velvet queen variety yield edible seeds? I’m trying to figure out if I can harvest mine or if it’s a lost cause! Thank you!

    Recently watched people roasting the sunflower head before the seeds come. Thought about that when you smelled the inside. Maybe you could save some to roast after getting the seeds.. if you haven’t already.

    Those kids probably are healthier than average since sunflowers have the "good" fats and decent amounts of vitamins. I snack on them whenever I have minor snack cravings. They taste great when mixed in powdered ranch dressing!
