@@Renewed85 Me too. I just processed a dozen heads that yielded 11 lbs of seeds. My thumbs hurt. I put the 16” head in the dryer overnight after a quick dunk in peroxide for use as seed next season.
😂🤣😂 OMG I was just curious about how sunflower seeds are harvested and I happened upon this video. HILARIOUS! I had to subscribe. Please keep these videos coming. I learned how sunflower seeds are harvested and roasted and died laughing the whole time.🤣😂🤣
This year I planted a row of sunflowers along my fence. They’ve all been pollinated & a lot of birds and squirrels have been eating most of the seeds. I’m pretty happy with that because I wanted to pollinate the bees and help the birds and squirrels. I saved 4 heads and I’m going to save some for next year and eat the rest :)
I just simple searched in google ‘how to harvest sunflower seeds’ your video was the very first link and I am so glad I clicked on it. I clicked sub after the first like minute 😂. Even for being a 4 yr old video it’s amazing can’t wait to watch more recent videos of your 🤩
Was looking for a recipe as I have a couple plants that are ready for seeding. Got to say this is one of the funnest cook videos I’ve seen. Love humor, music, and add ins. Also love that you don’t do exact measurements, live to short for that anyways. lol Thanks for the awesome video actually going to try your flavors. That I love old bay never would’ve thought of that. Thanks👍🏾❤️🙏
She's my new favorite person. Out here in the Central Valley of CA we grow a lot of our own food but when I grow Sunflowers they are like my babies and I just hate the time when I have to cut them down and harvest. Peculiar? Yes...it is.
I turn the sunflower over and cut it like a pie into 4 pieces and then use my thumb to get the seeds off the head. I used a huge stainless steel bowl and it took little time to get all the seeds off
Us a stiff brush or use a power drill with a bush attachment. Also let the flower head dry out alot longer and the back totally gets dry and turns brown.
Came here looking seed roasting instructions, ended up finding my personality twin 😂 you're so odd (the good kind) & random & silly, I fucking love it lol its like me in a different body 🤣🤣
To make the removing the seeds easier, I rip the heads of the sunflower and create sections.. It gives you a starting point to kind of get at the seeds.
You likely may wish to wear light gardening gloves when handling the Sunflower heads. Will protect your fingers and palms from rough edges. The heads are prickly when green and especially so when dried.
First year I grew sunflowers but I eat them as a work snack almost everyday. I will try this but I don't have a shed but I have a great place to hang them to dry a bit, I hope it works!
Heh. Was just looking for some instruction on how long/what temp to roast. Got some good laughs and might just have to try some old Bay sunflower seeds.
For the taste test, try going to a park and getting people to give an opinion. Great jokes and delivery. I roast at 450 and use dry salad dressing mix.
Try using some car tint on the windows in the she shed? I’ve never done it but it may help with the temperatures. Some insulation may help between the rafters too. Great production value in the video, new subscriber!
Dude I love you and your energy. I am not friends with a lot of people well cause I'm blunt mainly but I think we could be friends. And I'm making sunflower seeds right now. Your funny😂. Keep it up
If you harvest the seeds without drying them, is it only to help removal, or will it help the flavor too when brining? My sunflowers have been drooped over for a couple weeks, and I cut them today and just took the seeds out right away. I'm now soaking them in salt water.. but wondering if I dried them first if the flavor would he any different. Thanks!
I don’t know how I ended up here.. but I’m glad I did… I absolutely enjoyed this video.. and the Archer cut ins were perfect.. definitely liked and subscribed lol…
To open up the seeds, hold the wide end of the seed between your thumb and forefinger, the thinner end between an upper and lower tooth, pop it up with your teeth, remove the edible seed with your tongue and, there you go. It needs a bit of practice and when you get it you will not be able to stop eating. So addictive.
Omg thank you for making me laugh out loud!!! This is a great video!! You remind me of myself with the sea shed, bare feet and the spider!!! I picked mine and wanted to see what others did. THANK YOU!!
Yes you can. I never let them dry on the plant. Usually I pick them when the back of the head is starting to go very light green. Depending on the type of sunflower I wait until they look plump and start to show the black lines. And the pedals are dry and crunchy. Then I hang and let them dry some more.
It’s amazing how many of us are transforming into how we should be-homesteaders !!
Tara, yes, absolutely ... and loving it!
If you rub the flower heads together the seeds will fall out much easier during the harvesting process. Great video!👍
I wish I would have seen this an hour ago 😂😂😂

You are awesome! Love your sense of humor! I just harvested my sunflowers and was searching on how to roast the seeds. Glad I found you!

I knew I liked you from the get. But, you had me at the “seeds n stems” montage.
Hilarious.

This is very helpful, because I am deciding to grow sunflower seeds this summer and I needed to find a way to season it too, thanks😁
You are hysterical!!! I don’t know if I’m looking forward to the process or terrified! 😂
Seriously I really appreciate the Archer references rock on girl!

love it!!!I just planted hundreds of sunflower seeds..
Squirrel lmao love it

Love the way you measure, it's exactly the way I do it.

Great production value in the video, new subscriber!
I ended up putting some textured glass on top that helps a little bit. Insulation is my next step!
Another backwoods tip is to just tape 1000 of them plastic toy magnifying glasses to your shed windows to increase drying efficiency.
Heehee. Thanks for the giggles. I totally get cha!

Enjoyed watching this. Lover your spark and personality. Beautiful person
“Its pretty much like pistachios only not as good and not as easy to open” lol
So... not like pistachios at all lol. 2 very different things my friend. One is a nut, the other a seed.
I eat a bowlful every evening. It is very good if you suffer from acid reflux.

Is it ok to pick when the flower looks wilted. the squirrels get to them before we do. And, I want to dry them for my grandsons.
