My bull gears went out on me three weeks ago. It lasted about 1,700,000 miles. If you can afford it, I recommend changing them out after every overhaul. I still think the Detroit series 60 engine is the best engine ever made for an owner operator. It’s reliable, easy to work on and the parts are a lot cheaper than Cummins, Cat and Volvo.
Agreed 👍
Love my 60!
The early ones got pretty good fuel milage too
Thanks,I have a series 50,with 1,875,312 miles,I will change my bull gear bearing soon.
@@josephrajaram3131how many balance shafts in that many miles
You are right about the bull gear and I have overhauled them and the torque on the large nut is 450 foot lbs if I remember correctly. The is the same idler gear bearing used in the 71, 92 series. The biggest issue is to get a preload on the bearing so it can work under load in the gear train. They can go lots of miles but if your into the engine have it checked out. Detroit wants you to buy the whole bloody gear for a crap load of money when the bearing is not that expensive to replace. Just an idea for those interested.
Thank you for pointing this out! When you overhaul any fuel combustion motor, DO NOT CUT CORNERS! REPLACE EVERYTHING! Spend the time and funds, and do it right ONCE!
If your a trucker and drive a company truck and don't work on these engines there's no way you would know or even care because it's not your problem lol! But for the folk who own and wrench on there own truck should know this info! Unless you pay someone to do all your work... Like HT said I'm a firm believer if you don't replace it when the engine is already torn down you asking for the headache great video to drop some knowledge on the community!! We appreciate you sharing! Thanks 12.7 Gang!!
Most of the time you can hear a bull gear making noise if you know what to listen for. Tell how to check your bull gear take your accessory drive out it’s got 5 13mm bolts it’s what you put a 7-16 socket and pull handle on to turn your 60 series by hand. When you have this out you can see the edge of the bull gear take a pry bar and pry the gear back and forth to see if you have any play. Shouldn’t have any play. This can save you a lot of time and money. This is very important info.
Let you know my secrets on 60 series.
Mine never made any kind of noise. I got really lucky
My s60 12.7 did fine till it was overhauled around 25,000 hours. Then it did better again. Good clean motor oil helps keep the bull gear happy.
@@ifyoutip ya but keep an eye on your Accessory drive it can come apart and take the bull gear out.
@@joseywales7270 interesting, I kept doing oil samples on mine and did the best maintenance i could. I sold it not so terrible long ago. But them is a legendary motor.
Thank you for chopping up this game. You are a blessing that saved a lot of truckers a lot of money.
The achellis' heel of the 60 series. The bull gear is a maintenance item. During the ddec 1&2 the factory recommended cycle was 650,000. When ddec 3 came out it was upped to 750,000.
12,000 dollar rebuild what is another 1500 bucks, I would change it without question.
I've worked at DDC 24 years. This is very informative. I've installed them. Love seeing DDC content. Keep Driving and be safe out there!! Keeping America rolling!!
Appreciate that and thanks for stopping by I try to get some information whenever I can come across mechanics that work on these
He is correct!!! Gear train tied to air comp, fuel pump, waterpump, oil pump and accesory drive for alt. Retired detroit diesel mechanic!!
Love those 12.7s , got a nice classic with a 702 and tilt manifold tuned at 575 , does it’s job well. But you’re right these Detroit’s bull gear needs to be checked every 500 - 700k or before an overhaul.
You are absolutely right. It's critical. Kenny Long at Patriot Star had his go out at night on the side of the road. He had to get towed a long way and was down for a month because no one would sell him one. So many glider companies snatched them up for their builds that they wouldn't sell them. Maybe they will now since gliders are going away.
The thing I like about the 12.7 is for just a couple thousand bucks you can make a 1000 hp engine that's still a good strong, reliable engine. You can swap the cam and crank for a marine engine counterpart, crank the boost, and you have a 1000 hp engine. They still get pretty good mileage when you aren't hot rodding them. I know of more than a few o/o that have done that to a 12.7 and they still get around 6-8 when they drive them right. My dad was an o/o his entire life, I've been driving for 15 out of the last 24 years and worked as a diesel mechanic for the company I worked for driving for the years I wasn't driving after my kids were born.
Yup we have rebuilt 3 Detroits (2 12.7 and 1 14L) in our fleet and as part of the rebuilt we have changed the bull gear, oil pump, and injectors, water pump, air compressor and turbo as well for pieces of mind. All three truck have been good and engine problem free for the past few years and they have from 500k-700k one the overhauls and still running strong
You’re right. I remember when I was in high school my dad was out for a while when his bull gear went out. 2001 Volvo 660 12.7 but he didn’t overhaul and just fixed the bull gear and it still ran great after that
As long as you are doing maintenance. also replace the balancer on the front of the crankshaft every 500,000 miles
I don't have much experience with driving trucks, or much knowledge about them. However, I've driven a few trucks with a few different engines and so far, I would say that I wouldn't want anything other than Series 60 Detroit. I've driven trucks with more powerful engines and stronger jakes, but a Detroit in my experience and from what I've seen; is a very dependable work horse.
The repair shop I worked for, we always recommend to the vehicle owner to replace the Bull Gear, when we did a inframe or major overhaul.
Yes indeed thats definitely the time to do it thanks for watching be safe
@@HTlogistics87 I have rebuilt all 6 versions of the 60 Series Detroit Engines....gen 6 is worst.....
Smart
I'm currently rebuilding a gen 3 Detroit 60 Series, due to pitted liners, causing compression to enter the cooling system and push 3 gallons of coolant out every day and the liner packings, o-rings, were about to fail..... so I saved this one just in time.
Clay ferguson, I've changed a bunch of these years, and for the most part. The small bearing in the center of the ygea r is all that needed replaced. It's just the added aggravation of removing the rad and removing the front cover and all the accessories that makes the jobs labor intensive. That's a very small bearing doing critical work to gamble on another million miles. Bill
"Anything made by man is not bullet proof" you could not have worded that any better👍
Very informative!!!I'm on the hunt for an xl shaker which led me to your video...so Thank you sincerely for the knowledge.
Man that's not a secondary opinion. That information was a solid gold opinion.
That information might have just save someone's business.
A man should never do a cheap rebuild. A cost of a few parts maybe half a week's worth of Pay.
But peace of mind is priceless.
100 percent agreed 😊
Buy once, cry once.
@@anthonykaiser974 perhaps elucidate on your comment.
@@otrogreandcorgi9818 it's an expression regarding paying up front to get things done right or buying better quality merch. You only cry once when you spend the dough to do it right.
@@anthonykaiser974 If one does it right the first time there is no reason to cry.
Side note. If you want to have some good entertainment talk trash about lease drivers at a truck stop on the CB. You'll be amazed how many of those old Boomers. Can't do simple calculations.
But as long as those people exist. There'll be a lot of money to make.
That's y I love you tube cuz thanks to your videos we get to know and learn from people like you thank you so much very helpful info.👍
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it really opened my mind about my engine swap project. You are absolutely right about this video. Once again, Thank you!.
You are 100 percent right I know several people that had to replace their engines and couldn't figure out way
This is a great video. I agree with you 100% it's better to be safe than sorry.
Thank you. Exactly right. Take care. Just got a head gasket anti freeze leak so going to have alot of mine apart...1.2 million...planning on possibly a rebuilt bullgear but this clinched it.
You can spend the money on the front end or you can take it in the rear later, when engine fails........
First time owner and first time hearing about this. Cheers legend
Seen a couple bull gears lose teeth they almost always take out the crank gear as well, if the bearing on the bull gear is still good but teeth damaged look at crankshaft run out
Thanks for the video HT keep rolling God bless from Michigan
Thanx very good video. I just got a 12.7 with 900k miles on. Definitely changing out injectors and bull gear when I have to over haul.
Great video im actually looking into a detroit and had no idea about the bull gear..
Always coming through with the great insight
Well said Bud. I hope some of the guys learned something.
I have been driving for four years now and want to get my own semi. I have been doing a lot of research and videos like yours are very helpful. I agree with you. I would just have it replaced with an overhaul. The guys that cheap out on little things and try to push them. They are the guys broke down every month and racking up shop bills.
Having the bull gear replaced is not a cheap fix. Two to three thousand for labor and then parts.
you're information is awesome thank you so much brother
good video I didnt think aboiut to have bull gear check good reminder I got my book the other day
Joe good question! It is for any engine no matter diesel or gas ,the point is not the bull gear it self , but the two bearings , that gear's can be for life ,if other part's will replace in time , he said and well do a hover haul do right .
I’m definitely gone buy a Classic XL. And I’m always gone resort back to this video as I do my research.
This was very helpful bro... Besafe and keep up the good work.... that’s the first time I’ve ever heard anybody talk abt a bull gear..👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Glad you learned something bro and pass it on to someone who has a Detroit be safe out there
Good research, safe predictions
Bro u r a great awesome man just giving million dollars 💵 in game thanks bro and thanks again for ur channel

I Have know idea about this bull gear part. Thanks for teaching us. God bless u bro.
Yes indeed no problem
Valuable information brother thank you
Good looking on the information!!!!!
Hi I'm thinking of buying a 12.7
Had no idea on bull horn issue
So i thank you for your time and info.
Yes indeed and thanks for stopping by
Very interesting video . Thanks bro
Thanks for the info brother you are appreciated
Thanks and appreciate you watching be safe and thanks for your support
Great video I caught mine 14L had chip teeth in my oil change. Cost 11k bullgear and bottom bearings replaced 1.2mil
Yes sir it can happen thats right appreciate you stopping by bro hope all is well with you
Exactly how I caught mine
Thanks for the info.Truck diagnostic soft wares are so expensive for the truck.and with more modules on trucks it is getting complex. All new and used trucks sold by dealerships should include free diagnostic software and lifetime updates. Secondly the truck mechanic certification is so complex and complicated that more mechanics don't get certified and repairs become cheaper.
Hope you can share your views about CNG conversion of heavy duty trucks we drive , Diesel prices are killing small operators.
HT you could run a helluva diesel shop.
Great information and video
Very good information
nice video. I'd think that a complete overhaul would include everything, every bearing and bolt.
I just had the transmission re built in my '95 7.3 E40D automatic trans. he just re used the housing. that's a re-build. to me
Thanks for ur insight
Always good information
As always good video/info
Great video 👍
I dont know shit about driving trucks but these videos are interesting to know!!
thanks for the video!
I have a 12..7 Detroit horror story for you. My bull gears started to run on me so I took it to the WW Williams Detroit shop. I had my bull gears replaced and within two weeks I threw a rod through the block. $9000 down the drain.
Wow sorry to hear that 😕
Gracias amigo
Hello, thanks for the videos. Quick question. What does a bull gear with some kind of gasket maker ,It might even be JB Weld, indicate? It runs along the middle where the housings meet. Thanks in advance. Leak? Or opened up sometime before?
Great video
Great video!
This video has save me money. Classic.
Thanks bro
i have a 2000 model 12. 7 with 1.8 mil bullgear still ok next inframe will change i appretiate the video
I just found a 2000 12.7 with 376k original miles on it. It was in an old company truck so I was able to fire it up.
Great advice!
Truth. It can be checked by removing a sensor. The bearings are available from AutoZone. There's a reman gear also available. $200 for both. Gasket kits. You need a good mechanic. Then the other gears could be damaged.
Good info 14L gang here
I HEARD ABOUT IT DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS N THANKS
Good info 👍👌
Good Tip Man
Good video
your right , still good motor
Thanks man
Thankyou i didnt know anything about that
Does this go for the 11.1 as well? I hear the 12.7 parts fit it
🚀 good advice I heard it through the grapevine 🍇
#thanks
Blessings to you big brother thank you
think you for this imfo
Thanks for the info
Yes indeed bro your welcome
I have a DD series 60 11.1 liter even though its a 1997. Thats what the data plate tells me. I have seen them re-programmed to get more hp. Mine does ok but I was wondering if doing so would over work the transmission and will mileage go down much? Some people with more hp claim better mileage as they say the engine is not working as hard. If you put a 12.7 in its place do you have to change the DDEC? This is on a Prevost bus.
My bull gear stripped out on me while I was driving truck just shut off w/o warning and I damaged the motor more when I tried to start it. I had an out frame done... reman head replaced all liners (bc 3 had dropped) all new gears in the front cover. 12.7 engine. The og bull gear lasted about 1.4 million
Yes Indeed its hit and miss with these bull gears ⚙ when they go they go
How much did it cost to fix?
@@Thillx2 it was right at 10k. No turbo no injectors. I reused them bc they were aftermarket power adders
I have driven for a company for 16 years. I get a new truck every 5 years. My last truck was a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia with the 14.8 liter. It had 435k miles when I turned it in. My new truck is a 2021 Volvo VNL760 with a smaller 12.8 liter Volvo engine and a Volvo 12 speed auto tranny. It make more torque 1,750 lbs.-ft than the larger 14.8 liter Detroit 1,650 lbs.-ft. .I said that to say this. Buy newer trucks. You don't have to worry about who rebuild the engine. Newer trucks burn less fuel than the older engines.
Ur right change it...
I would replace the bull gear every overhaul its a comon failure on the 60 series
Good info
Is the 2001 through 2006 14 liter MORE reliable than the 12.7?
I'm more concerned with uptime than mpg or power.
I was told the 14l bull gear never goes bad?
The 60 series is a great fucking engine that needs to be taken care off, but when hurt it’ll also last a fucking long time too
Legit I.P.A appreciate you.
Are there any warning signs before the bull gear go out???
Can the bull gear going bad be detected through ecm diagnostics? Fuel timing, valve timing through output emissions for example.
No not really it just goes bad thats why i just change it because if you pull the housing off you might as well change it thanks for watching
Genial my Friend
Looking at one has a million miles on it, what should I look for?
