Kinda funny that they had to change the headlights, add sidemarkers, modify the speedometer, etc. If you want to legally drive an imported US vehicle in Germany (which I do since 2012), you have to change DOT headlights to (E) headlights (if you lucky you can keep the OEM), replace red turn signals with amber ones, disable the side markers or replace them with amber ones (again if lucky, you can keep the original) and replace the speedometer with a km/h one, if it’s an mph version only (or at least add km/h marks for 30, 50, 70, 100 km/h when it’s an old analog speedometer). 😂
Smart uses a non-standard pinout for OBD and using a MaxiRecorder or a ScanGauge with the 'default' cable causes weird odometer jumps on cars that display in kilometers. If the SAM and the display differ in odometer, B1321 might get set to indicate "Wrong odometer reading". I've seen a few statements that Smart recommends using a "euro OBD2 cord" for cars that display in kilometers and some notes confirming that using a "non euro ODB2 cord" causes the odometer to jump a random amount of kilometers forward. Although they do also specify that the Mercedes Benz dealership service software (there's references to "the STAR machine"?) can reset the odometer if it jumps due to the tech using the wrong cable.

I’m a teenager in Michigan. There used to be emissions inspections but only for older cars and there weren’t really requirement so I don’t know what the point was. And they do safety inspections when you get your drivers’ license (all 3 stages). But yeah, requirements are lax. I’ve got a 2000 Subaru Forester with an on check engine light (manual says that means the emissions sensor is dead) but that didn’t stop me from passing inspections
If your O2 sensor is bad the engine will also run worse as it is used by the engine managenent to optimize the fuel/air mix. They are usually not expensive of difficult to replace.
@@rogerwilco2 on this car it was… everything was so severely rusted that even the simplest of jobs were very bad. If I remember right it was some sensor in the charcoal canister or something, not the O2 sensor. I haven’t had the car for 3 years at this point.
My mother bought a smart car in 2010, it was a 2008 model so the 2nd gen, with the big 999cc engine & 5spd - anyways, it had about 20,000K's on the clock after a few months and a couple thousand K's the engine light came on. Went to the local mechanic who said it's just some sensor that's gone bad (I believe in the exhaust?) so she didn't bother getting it fix.. it's putted on true has her daily driver till this very day now with ~130,000K's (which isn't a lot for a 13 year old car but) it's never skipped a beat in all those years though - tbh, I'm more impressed the check engine light hasn't burnt out yet!! XD
Replacing the O2 sensor should be cheap and easy in most cars. It will make it run better asit is used to optimize the fuel/air mix going into the engine.
Mr. Wheels, The scanner tool used for the emissions test caused the odometer to change because your car is NOT fully OBDII compliant. The commands were misinterpreted by the dash module as a re-write of the mileage stored in it. The conversion process did not take into account this matter. The only way to "scan" this car is to use the correct Mercedes-Benz software. Just sayin.... Love your channel and content just the same... Second Gen fully electric Smart owner.
I had an Audi that I bought very very cheap because it had multiple issues that even the dealer had trouble with diagnosing. Turned out to be nothing more than a faulty cell on an otherwise strong battery. It even caused clutch judder like a failing dual mass flywheel because of ECU reference voltage issues as I think the alternator output varied around idle. Weak capacity batteries often throw up spurious error codes in my experience due to reference voltage instability.
we dutch do the obd scanner for cars after after 1-1-2006 and if it fails that we go back to sticking it up the tailpipe again. Yep read actual emissions like older cars.
Luckily I never have any problems getting my stuff inspected in my part of the state (middle of nowhere). Good thing too, I have all kinds of random projects with engine swaps, custom subframes, RWD/AWD conversions, etc.
I like the first generation car having lived with one as a daily in France many years ago. My reluctance to own this one was the low value relative to the difficulty finding parts. "Sure buddy, we have that part and it's the only one that's left in the world." I decided I'd lose less getting an Autozam AZ-1.
About the door lock failing, since this is a German car if you hold down the unlock button it will (after a few seconds) start to roll down the windows. Same thing if you hold the lock buttons down, it start rolling up the windows.
same thing happens on gm products they most likey plugged in the scanner when the ignition was on and the and it was plugged in unevenly and it shorted when it was plugged in, its the emissions inspections facility fault for the mileage incresase.
For an european hearing "emissions test" in the 'US of A' is quite hilarious ... specially in a car that has an overall engine displacement that some of your engines have in a single cylinder...
I am surprised he got rid of it when it is a terrible car with all the problems it had you think it would entertain him alot with how many problems it had cause it was broken like the wheego

The fact that the Reliant seems to be no problem legally whilst the Micro Merc was a sad case is just amazing! Computers in cars: what could go wrong? Talk about "wag the dog"!
For some reason, I just KNEW you were going to say Michigan! The state that NEEDS safety inspections. The pieces of crap that I see rolling around on these roads is unreal.
Converted imported cars are so cool, if I had a lot of money it would definitely be my hobby. Like, sure, you'd waste a bunch of money just to sell a simple car, but on the other hand you'd be the coolest guy around if you imported a bunch of GR Yaris...es. Or Jimnys.
I'm an external partner with my local Mercedes dealership, and let me tell you, those damned SAM units are NOTORIOUS for just dying without cause, often irreparably. I've lost many a night's sleep trying to troubleshoot them.
Congratulations for getting rid of this shitbox! And I'm from Europe where we see those a lot. The worst is the engine which has to be replaced at 100'000 km. Awful gearbox too! And uses more gasoline than a real car. But I hope you keep the Trabant which is getting rare 30 years after the falling of the wall and is really special with his two-stroke engine!

We got these in aus.i live sydney nsw and we have yearly inspections no emision checks
Mr. Wheels,
The scanner tool used for the emissions test caused the odometer to change because your car is NOT fully OBDII compliant.
The commands were misinterpreted by the dash module as a re-write of the mileage
stored in it.
The conversion process did not take into account this matter.
The only way to "scan" this car is to use the correct Mercedes-Benz software.
Just sayin....
Love your channel and content just the same...
Second Gen fully electric Smart owner.
like your reg on your 3 wheeler
Yes, but do Americans know what it means?
I had an Audi that I bought very very cheap because it had multiple issues that even the dealer had trouble with diagnosing. Turned out to be nothing more than a faulty cell on an otherwise strong battery. It even caused clutch judder like a failing dual mass flywheel because of ECU reference voltage issues as I think the alternator output varied around idle. Weak capacity batteries often throw up spurious error codes in my experience due to reference voltage instability.
Michigan?! Great, love to see this on my roads
we dutch do the obd scanner for cars after after 1-1-2006 and if it fails that we go back to sticking it up the tailpipe again. Yep read actual emissions like older cars.
I wasn't expecting the video to
You fixed it.. you are genus. I would keep it, you got it for a GREAT deal.
Glad to see a new video from you.
I have an 06 TDI. 55 MPG. Had it 6 years. Still a good second car.
I had a Smart Brabus and it was MENTAL!
I could be the code is an oem specific code (possibly o2 related) that your scanner is pulling the generic code (or most common) code definition for
Just scrapped my 2006 Passion cabrio. Fantastic car. I moved house in that car (quite slowly...). Like a Tardis.
same thing happens on gm products they most likey plugged in the scanner when the ignition was on and the and it was plugged in unevenly and it shorted when it was plugged in, its the emissions inspections facility fault for the mileage incresase.
I've had a first and second generation. great toys.
Whats eco friendly about this car is that, if you get into an accident , the car well breakdown into its natural elements .
You should've come down to Arkansas. We have no inspections either
For an european hearing "emissions test" in the 'US of A' is quite hilarious ...
specially in a car that has an overall engine displacement that some of your engines have in a single cylinder...
And the fact that they just plug in the computer for emissions is also hilarious, BUT you would fail for a check engine light, logic...
Where’s the bus! We want to see more bus! 🚌
We want to watch him do bus stuff in the dungeon!!!
I was thinking of buying it when I move to america somewhere around 10-15 years from now
That's one strange Weego mate, good job getting rid of it
I am surprised he got rid of it when it is a terrible car with all the problems it had you think it would entertain him alot with how many problems it had cause it was broken like the wheego
Aunt Barbara adores you!
I always love seeing new videos! I don't know how possible it is, but can you schedule ad breaks, and write your script around them so they don't cut off part of your sentances?
Keep up the good work!
I live here in Michigan. It's true. You can register even the most dangerous of death traps.
I'll keep an eye out for it.
@@p.b.1589 I was referring to how relaxed the laws are in Michigan for what you can register.
You should get a ZAZ-968M. Basically a Ukrainian Trabant competitor.
My M.O.T OBD reader just kills the gauge fuze or just otherwise kills half of the digital display. Every year its fun to see what breaks.
"A million mile Smart with full service history"
Michigan represent. We don't do any of that front plate bullshit either.
0:53 I hear a Sony head unit :D
Converted imported cars are so cool, if I had a lot of money it would definitely be my hobby. Like, sure, you'd waste a bunch of money just to sell a simple car, but on the other hand you'd be the coolest guy around if you imported a bunch of GR Yaris...es. Or Jimnys.
I'm an external partner with my local Mercedes dealership, and let me tell you, those damned SAM units are NOTORIOUS for just dying without cause, often irreparably. I've lost many a night's sleep trying to troubleshoot them.
The sold customisation kits for them, so you could personalise it with new panels.
I bet the Swatch company came up with that idea.
I've found your channel late enough to remember it (and that other won't go car).
Your videos are terrific
Remove instrument cluster and look there... maybe there is a odometer canbus adapter..
Ahh a perfect lunch break video.
I want more of your videos! What about the bus project? I am eagerly waiting.
But where's the outro, Robert ? The one where you attempt to do a burnout with the Trabant :D
