I wish more electric cars were like this - just a regular car with an electric motor. Every other electric car on the market is styled and marketed in a way that shouts "Look at me, I'm electric. Still, I wonder what it'd be like to get one of these and replace the batteries with something more modern that can provide decent range.
this thing would be the perfect daily if it had fast charging capability and like you said a halfway decent range would make it amazing. not often you see an electric car with analog gauges and an actual wiper/turn signal stalk😂
"The only car with a speedometer that maxes out at less than the top speed." Ohh, you haven't been in a '88 Econoline van! Those babies had speedos that topped out at 110, but they went a *lot* faster than that if you had nothing but straight, flat roads in the middle of nowhere to drive through. My dad owned one when I was a kid, and we were never quite sure what speed we actually reached, but the dial did go all the way back around to 10mph by the time we decided to stop driving like idiots. That was a fun story to tell my mom.
All cars sold in the US from the late seventies to the late 80’s or so had 85 MPH speedometers by law. Almost every car built back then was faster than its speedometer.

I have to say, there is a lot of engineering in that car. Having built a number of electric vehicles in the early 2000s, it's really hard to convert a gas vehicle AND make it look OEM. If they did it for less than $100 million, that is an achievement. Too bad they didn't put it into something more interesting - doing that & focusing on the charging network is basically what made Tesla. I think the thing to do with this is to take the electric bits and stick it into a more interesting body....
Well, doing that, focusing on the charging network, _and_ gajillions of dollars' worth of really, _really_ aggressive marketing based on an appropriation of an already-recognized name made Tesla. I feel like that last part's a pretty important difference.

Fun fact! Speedometers that only went to 85 were mandatory in the US for a handful of years around 1980, as part of the NHTSA's implementation of the 1979 law that pinned the speed limit on the Interstate to a horrifically glacial 55 mph until the mid-'90s. My very first car was an '84 Oldsmobile Toronado, which still had an 85-mph speedo despite that particular bit of regulation having been abandoned by '82 (I suppose because GM hadn't bothered to redesign the interior yet). That car had the same habit as your Coda, of being so smooth you could end up going much faster than you meant to go. I don't know how _much_ faster, because of the 85-mph speedo, but I will say that at one point, when I noticed I'd inadvertently pegged it and took my foot off the gas, it took... _some time_ for the needle to come off the peg and start going down. :) Also, the box copy for the flashlight makes me nostalgic for the instructions printed on the envelope that the disposable chopsticks provided by my favorite Chinese restaurant used to come in: "Please enjoy your Nice Chinese Food with Chopstick, the traditional and typical of China glonous [sic] history and cultual [sic]."
We had a 1986 Plymouth Reliant K wagon, 5spd stick with 3.50 final drive A525 transmission, on 155/80R13 tires. 3rd gear would bury the 85mph max speedo... and it would still pull in 4th and 5th!

We owned Coda #87, purchased in December 2012. It was advertised as 125 miles range. We were able to reach 122 for the top range, but over our 40K mile ownership, it delivered 110 miles regularly. The only time it dropped below that was during a rainstorm, with heavy winds and high 39s temperature, with the headlights, defrosters, and heater all running. That put us at 93 miles range, so the EPA 88 mikes range was garbage. It also accelerated easily to 60mph in 8.5 seconds, which is not neck snapping like our Tesla Model 3, but a very nice acceleration capability, helping us to avoid freeway on-ramp drama. As to heating/cooling the passenger and battery compartments, we had a heat pump in the Coda, which neither our 2917 Audi or 2018 Tesla Model 3 came with. Yes, there were software issues which were not addressed, due to Coda’s bankruptcy, but overall, it was a decent EV. Only Teslas and the RAV4-EV had more range (the RAV4-EV only if charged to 100%, which was not recommended). Also, in the 2 months before bankruptcy, a 50kW CCS DC fast charge connection was tested and it actually fit within the confines of the charge port door. It didn’t make it to market before the bankruptcy, unfortunately, but we were able to gain 23-24 mph charging with the level 2, 30amp GE Wattstation EVSE which came with the Coda for free, so recharging to 100% taking 8 hours is 90 minutes longer than it took our Coda to charge from empty.
I remember this vehicle; saw an example at the LA car show where they had one on display. If I remember correctly, though of Chinese manufacture, it's based upon a Mitsubishi chassis under license. And, yes, I seem to remember that they lasted all of 18 months or so. If my memory serves me correctly, all of them were sold in Southern California as a dealer wasn't yet established at the time of the LA car show in Northern California where I live. Glad to see that someone actually appreciates it.

Someone in my neighborhood had one of these. I always thought it was just from a short-lived brand made by a major car company (like Geo). I had also thought it could be an Opel despite the fact that the brand was never sold in the US.
I watch this channel because it features rare obscure cars, and wow you do not disappoint. The Coda logo on its yellow background reminds me a bit of Renault, only they replaced the diamond with a completely nondescript circle. It's like one of those generic non-licensed cars you find used as part of the scenery in video games, made real.
"This is Papa Bear. Put out an APB for a male suspect, driving a...car, of some sort. Heading in the direction of...you know, that place that sells chili. Suspect is hatless. Repeat, hatless."
That's how they used to describe cars on old cop shows from the days when product placement (and realism) were frowned upon. Only in this case, "a black sedan" is about the most accurate description of the car you can expect.
I used to follow Coda on Facebook back in the day. I remember reading about a story they shared - one of their customers apparently named their newborn after the company.
That was an entertaining, well-edited, well-written, well-performed video. Congratulations. You got me to spend almost 20 minutes of my life watching a video about a car that’s as exciting as lint. Thus proving hijinx in hypercars isn’t the only means to success. Keep up the good work!

I own (and very much like) a first gen Hyundai Ioniq (introduced 2016, mine is was built early 2019). Some noteworthy differences: - My displayed range is about 200km with a 27 kWh battery. Less battery than the Coda, more range (since mine is actually able to meet advertised range). - Battery heating and cooling is entirely passive, done by an airvent that is under the mid seat in the back (do not obstruct). Idea: The inside temperature of the car is actively controlled, use that nicely temperate air for heating in the winter or cooling in the summer. No coolant required. - Blandness reduced by several orders of magnitude

“ A giant badge on the trunk that doubles as a license plate “ 😂😂
oh god get back in there I love that one it's so cute😂😂😂😂😂😂
I remember this vehicle; saw an example at the LA car show where they had one on display. If I remember correctly, though of Chinese manufacture, it's based upon a Mitsubishi chassis under license. And, yes, I seem to remember that they lasted all of 18 months or so. If my memory serves me correctly, all of them were sold in Southern California as a dealer wasn't yet established at the time of the LA car show in Northern California where I live. Glad to see that someone actually appreciates it.
as long as it's cheap, that's the kind of electric car most people would want
your absolutely right, but also mileage.
mileage usually isn´t a big problem as long as it´s cheap I guess
Yeah, but it wasn't very cheap either... now it might be, but if something goes wrong, good luck finding parts and qualified personnel...
@@MetalTrabant it was made 8 years ago when electric cars were still fairly new
Codas mistake was trying to do way to much in the beginning like making a coda with a cvt and experiments like that which burned all there cash off before they could make money selling cars if they had just did the one coda they may have had a chance but they tried to do to much to fast
Dude your advanced editing skills are noticed, and I like the direction you're going in. You aren't just "applying some yt tutorial" to your vids like everyone else. You are really showing your style and personality with it. Good work, super entertaining vid!
That horn jump scare moment brought tears to my eyes from laughing, absolutely LOVE your work 😂👍
9:34, 13:01 - Yeah, I love it when he breaks the laws of physics. :)
Someone in my neighborhood had one of these. I always thought it was just from a short-lived brand made by a major car company (like Geo). I had also thought it could be an Opel despite the fact that the brand was never sold in the US.
Take off the badges, and it's not screaming 'LOOK AT ME IM DIFFERENT IM THE FUTURE'
I like.
It needs a trunk spoiler tho

It doesn't exactly scream that with the badges on either...
"All points bulletin, He is driving a.. driving a... car. A black car."
GTA V dispatcher: "Suspect seen driving a..........................."
Are you saying this car is always late?
"This is Papa Bear. Put out an APB for a male suspect, driving a...car, of some sort. Heading in the direction of...you know, that place that sells chili. Suspect is hatless. Repeat, hatless."
debadge it and literally nobody will be able to identify it
That's how they used to describe cars on old cop shows from the days when product placement (and realism) were frowned upon. Only in this case, "a black sedan" is about the most accurate description of the car you can expect.
man he really just has that unique editing style. I love how you can't see his body at 2:04 though lmao
"Coda" is a concluding event, or the end of a movement.
So there couldn't have been a second model from the naming of the first... :D
Or another word for 'Code'
Coda's second car should have been "DS Al Coda" ...I'll see myself out....
They could call an anti-rollback/creep feature "Fermata."
Ah, there's the intersection of music and cars I didn't know I wanted.
I’m so happy that you got a Coda. Literally found out about it a couple a month ago and wanted to know more.
love that dankpods is a patron here
They had the right idea at least, make an electric car that's like an ordinary car, which is exactly what Tesla did with the Model S.
14:40 Tesla even copied the panel gaps 😁
The model S is by far a normal car😂 it doesn’t even have mechanical door handles
The hand-crank flash light info certainly did it for me. You had me at "no need any power". Great video!
That interior is actually really nice with the two tone.
I used to follow Coda on Facebook back in the day. I remember reading about a story they shared - one of their customers apparently named their newborn after the company.
Me: Hey there's a replacement for the Wheego!
Robert: Nothing can replace the Wheego
That was an entertaining, well-edited, well-written, well-performed video. Congratulations. You got me to spend almost 20 minutes of my life watching a video about a car that’s as exciting as lint. Thus proving hijinx in hypercars isn’t the only means to success. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad I found your channel a few years ago, starting with the homemade truck camper. For the first minute of that, I thought boring, and then your sense of humour kicked in. I've watched every single one of your vids.
12:17 that’s a good one. XD also JEEZE that flashlight was hilarious
Personally I welcome this look. So many car makers feel the need to make their electric cars to stand out, which just has the effect of making the car look obnoxious... I feel its one of those "they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should" moments.
I saw one of these the other day!
Glad that you're finally doing a video on this majestic eco beast
Also, my MINI has gutter rails over the doors too, heh

The little things you do when editing the videos makes them very entertaining, I love to spend time trying to figure out exactly how you spliced clips together. Combined with your writing style, these videos are all awesome. And that car sounds very cool on paper, but ends up like a store brand sorta car. Very bland, but still functional.

1:49 Pininfarina - I can believe it. I had a 2005 Suzuki Forenza which was also designed by Pininfarina (but a rebadged Daewoo/Chevy/Buick/etc based on the market). Very very similar mirrors and headlights.
One of these came up for sale in my area a while back and the seller wanted like $5,000, which is laughable after seeing this video
The big 3 at the time stopped you getting one.... they still control what you buy...
I own (and very much like) a first gen Hyundai Ioniq (introduced 2016, mine is was built early 2019). Some noteworthy differences:
- My displayed range is about 200km with a 27 kWh battery.
I've heard of it. From what I understand it's just a cheap Chinese car that is based on a 90s Mitsubishi. Oh with a gutless electric powertrain.
I heard about it by watching the related videos on his wheego series

was it? u can find mitsu obviously supplied the original engines but theres not much on the platform, based on the company though seems like they're owned by chang'an who was in a joint venture with suzuki, if they yoinked the platform its probably from them, but to my knowledge the main cars they licensed to chang'an (and also automakers) are the cultus, alto, and carry, this one seems not like any of them in particular
