I really miss these excursions!! 614 was the absolute pinnacle of steam!! There is a damn good chance I was riding or chasing along side you back then!! Nothing like blowing down RT 17 hoping not to get pulled over!
Tremendous footage!!! Your footage of the connecting rods and drive wheels from rt.17 in Sloatsburg, NY where the trackage goes upgrade and is within 20-25ft. is phenominal. Absolutely fantastic!!!
Its great to see this video again after i lost it for 7 years after 2013, im happy to watch it again, my favorite american steam locomotive

What amazes me is the fact that all those moving parts were pounded out by hand. Those who molded the steel were artists.
I am glad that I had a chance to ride behind C&O 614. I would like to see this engine run again someday.
What is it that makes trains tug at the heart strings. these steamers bring back my childhood. They have the loneliest sound I ever heard, yet even at 66 give me a yearning to wander as I did as a youngster. Even the modern diesels of today have the same effect. Thanks to all who put these wonderful videos here.
What really impressed me was how clean the stack was- which is either an indication of some pretty level track or a one heck of a skilled fireman!
Rode the same trip on 10-12-97 ( the weekend before this). Flew in from the west coast specifically for this.
I was in one of those caravans chasing the 614...not on this day, however. Also rode the train to Port Jervis. Ate a meal in the diner as we went over Moodna Viaduct. Awesome memories...can't believe it's been 17 years!!

Great to see the 614 in action, it was one of many that ran about that time. NKP759, SP 4449, UP 844(4) and several Vermont Steamtown 4-6-2 double headers along with the action on the EBT, DR&GW. Many wonderful memories were brought back watching this. Sure miss those Steam excursions.

There is a turntable in Port Jervis. It's all that remains of the Erie RR complex that was once there.
If I remember correctly, it was restored (at least in part) because of these trips (and the promise of future ones).
The restored electric motors were not yet installed for the first trips in October of '96 and a bulldozer actually pulled the turntable to turn the engine.

This was on the west side of the Hudson River. 614 ran these trips for three years on the former Erie RR mainline, now New Jersey Transit / Metro North.

This is an impressive and wonderful example of a steam locomotive, the C&O 614 is an impressive sight to observe in action and I am disappointed that this engine is no longer in service anymore. I would really like to see the 614 be rebuilt/restored and returned to operation in the future, the C&O rr had an attractive class of 12 Lima built 4-8-4 type locomotives.

It's a shame CSX doesn't allow steam to run on their tracks anymore... If there is enough interest to get her running again she'll have to run on a scenic tourist railroad. 614 is currently on display in Clifton Forge Virginia.

Eggomania86 It’s too big for any scenic tourist line. Like take Strasburg for example. It’s just too big and long. It could however run along side 425 on its excursions or run excursions instead of 425 every so often. Where 113 and 425 run is one of the only places I could think of that would run it

I don't know, you may be right. They used a number of different whistles on these trips including a Reading 6-chime and a N&W hooter.

@parim31 I filmed it all myself. This was roughly a 200-mile roundtrip, so you could usually catch the train 3-4 times in each direction (especially with stops).
I moved to Orange County in November 1 1998 the last day the C&O 614 ran.
The closeup at 4:00 made me drool a little. Fantastic vid!

C&O 614 was the last commercially produced steam passenger locomotive in the United States, and it incorporated all the latest improvements such as all roller bearings on everything, Baker valve hear, and mechanical lubrication. The use of nickle steel was widespread as well. It was close to N&W Class Js in features, but not equal in performance due to several factors, not the least of which being the lower steam pressure. Some criticized the use of the steam injector, calling it a "poor man's feedwater heater" but Roland's tests confirmed it was effective.

@NJTCOMET No, 2101 was damaged in a roundhouse fire in Kenutcky in 1979 and never ran again. It was cosmetically restored as American Freedom Train #1 and traded for 614 which then ran in the early 80's on Chessie. 2101 is now at the B&O RR Museum in Baltimore MD. 2124 is the Reading T1 at Steamtown. 2102 is in Port Clinton PA and has not run since 1991 on the Reading and Northern. 2100, the last Reading T1, is in Washington state where it ran briefly after being badly converted to oil firing.
This sounds much better than 261! That one is an ATSF 6 chime and this one here is a Boston and Maine 6 chime.

C&O 614 is like a “Streamlined Kanawha,” although she’s a 4-8-4 northern types and the Kanawha’s are modified 2-8-4 berks.

The 614 is resting at the C&O center in clifton forge va, and has been repainted in green for the greenbriar hotel

That is a strong engine. The hill between Ramsey and Ridgewood was not joke even for diesel.
@typebangin incorrect, that engine is EX Reading 2101, a T1, not C&O 614, 2101 is at The Steam Town National Historic Site on display but is currently undergoing asbestos removal. Reading 2102 used to be used by the BM&R on occasions from Temple to Hamburg, she still might be up in Temple somewhere, to bad that program shutdown :(
