- This version of the Lord's prayer was recorded and released in 1974. This is another one of those songs I remembered from childhood and everyone else thought I was nuts! Antway, here it is with some info about the singer.
I am one of the very few non-Christians who fell in love immediately with this song when I first heard it in 1974. Her voice was like an angel singing from paradise. I would play the record again and again until it got damaged! I then spent the next 40 years hunting down this song, visiting hundreds of CD and cassette shops but to no avail. Finally, thanks to RUclips, I found this song online in 2007! I am still listening to it, it never bores.....
I'm right there with you!
I've had this tune rolling around in my head since '74. I sing it to myself in times of meditation and prayer. I finally had to search for it and so thankful I did. Love!
I can't believe I found this song! It has been in my head for fifty years. I was starting to think I made it up in my head as a child bc nobody else said they had heard of it. My search request was so specific, I thought there was no way.... But here we are. Especially after reading all the comments, I am amazed at how a "simple" tune impacted so many. God is great!
A beautiful, uplifting, spirit-filled song that the radio stations all played back in the day without being worried about social stigma. Aaah, the good ol' days. Where does one find meaning in social musical media now ?
So true about this wonderful song, but sadly I also agree about the social media aspect..
LOVE THIS HYMN. SHE SANG SO BEAUTIFUL. I HEARD IT BACK IN THE `70S AND NOW I GET TO HEAR IT AGAIN. LOVE IT. JUST FILLS YOUR HEART WITH LOVE AND JOY FOR OUR LORD AND SAVIOR.
I love this song....well done and still relevant almost 40 years later.
Will be relevant until the end of time! God love you!
@@FrankKunkel My thoughts, exactly.
I remember hearing this song playing on the radio when I was a little kid back in the 1970s. I still remember the chorus and the string section that has been playing in my brain for over nearly 50 years! Anytime I hear or say the Lord's prayer this song always pops up in my head! I've even asked people my age and older if they remember hearing this on the radio! Nope! I knew I wasn't going crazy…
What a wonderful song all these years later
OMg!! My teacher used to play this during free time! Lutheran school. 💙💙💙
Great song 🎵 brings me back to the late 70's. We need to hear this song on the radio now in 2021. God bless everyone ❣🙏✝️🎄Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night ❣🍂🍁🐿🦋🐦🎈🙂😊
Been looking for this song for years!!! So happy to hear it again!! I never forgot it and used it to teach the Our Father to my kids. I look forward to a day when another faith based song can reach the Top Ten.
Heard this as a child and never forgot it ! Love it so much!
I thought I was nuts remembering this, LOL!! I specifically just looked for it, and found it here. I knew the tune by heart and could hear her singing it, but never thought I'd find it...thanks!! And God bless
I've been looking for it for a couple days now. I've been searching The Carpenters albums, cos since it came out, for reasonable means, it does sound like something they'd have done during their "Top of the World," and "Only Yesterday," days.
We had a radio on 24/7 in our house and several out buildings and horse barns at that time. They were all tuned to the same current popular top 100 or so station and I heard it MANY reps per day. Had never heard the prayer before the song... LOVED IT and I was an agnostic 8 year old in 1974. There is nothing in this song that wouldn't agree to my current " I believe Jesus was on Earth - I believe in Evolution - I believe in Metaphysics - I believe in magnetism or mental connections between people/animal/things - I do NOT believe in any coincidence" state of being. Thanks for finding it so I can prove to my lapsed Catholic husband of 32 years (he was forced to attend Catholic church weekly until leaving parents house...) that the song existed. He never heard this beautiful version in his strict Catholic home.
I love this song!! I couldn't recite the Lord's Prayer before my "lil sis" played this for me [decades ago]!! plan on sharing this with one of my beloved ressies 👭💗
My aunt had this 45 & it's how I learned the Lord's Prayer way back then, also. Setting lessons to music, like School House Rock works.
THANK YOU for posting this. I thought I was the only one who remembered this song! NOBODY knew what I was talking about!!! I tried googling and just found oodles of christian rock
Same here!
I loved this song since teens.
Yeah - terrible title SEO wise. laugh
I also remember hearing this song in spring 1974 while sitting in the car in the rain... and I don't recall ever hearing it again, but the tune remained with me, and I just discovered that it was a nun who sang it.
i heard the song again when at age of 56. I fell in love immediately and started to learn it on my acoustic guitar. Now it is a must song for me in the morning when i worship the Lord Jesus.
i was incarcerated as a young man ....i love this song,it allowed me to make it through all that crazy crap..cant believe its been that long ago
Haven't heard this in 36 years! Thankyou :)
I'm so glad I found this song! It brings me back to simpler days.
Oh my God i remembered hearing this song when i was a child in the car going out of state to reunite with my brothers and sister and grandparents, which by the way would be the last time i would see my grandparents they passed shortly after.i asked my mom if she remembered this song but she didn't. I thought it was a false memory until today.i found it,so thanks for putting it out there
Looking for this song for the past 40 years.....Got it......
OMGS!! Thank you soooo much. I knew I wasn't crazy. I asked everyone if this song really existed, I remember hearing it on the car radio when I was a little kid in the 70's. Yea!!
Listened to this song on 45 record over and over at about 12 years old. Sold my entire collection at a yard sale when I was 20 for $5. Boy do I wish I had them back.
I've had this song in my head for 2 days. Thank you so much for sharing. :-)
My mother in law loved hearing this! Thanks for posting!
I loved this when I was growing up.
I remember this from my childhood, loved it then and now.
All I can say is I remember this song so vividly, looked and searched, and have never found it...tysm. I feel like I just struck a gold mine.
Sister Janet Mead passed away this week, age 83. A sister till the end, she did a lot of work with the homeless in her area. RIP Sister Janet.
You are definitely not nuts. I first heard this one as Wright College Track and Field Team was on our way out of town for a track meet. You could tell everyone in the car were listening because no one made a a sound. Thanks for the post. GOD BLESS!!!
Heard this song in either 73 or 74 in southeast asia while on a medivac for a brother Marine in my helo. Never heard it again untill now.
Thank you so much for that information!! I was 7 yrs. old and I remember hearing it and loving it every time it played. I have often wondered about her. Little did I know that Jesus would take center stage in my life many, many years later. Tears are flowing, thank you!
I remember this song very well. Was probably in my first year of High school. Liked it quite a lot. Happy to see it here, and enjoyed hearing it again today. Thank you for posting it!
Wow was a teenager when this came out.so glad to hear it again
Me to!
thankyou for helping me remember this awesome song and my childhood that was so innocent.
Thank you for sharing this GEM! I thought I had imagined it until now. I loved this version as a child growing up in the 1970's.
I loved it when it first came out and I still love it today.
I remember this too! WOW! a blast from the past!
I remember this well. My girl was Catholic and I was not. This song bonded us, we broke up in 1976, too bad, but that's life. Still think of her when I hear this song,
Tears in my eyes just wonderful
I remember singing this song in the backseat of the car in the spring of 1974, In my 10yr old sensibility I heard and sang "Hama sama seesaw say" when the singer was actually saying "hallowed be thy name" oh the things you think you hear as a child, it's still a lovely song.
I have this song in my head a lot sometimes. I love it!
Sister Janet Mead performing The Lord's Prayer. The original video clip was recorded on the grounds of Saint Aloysius College in Adelaide, South Australia in 1973.
I haven't heard that since I was a little kid. Nice
I first heard this in 6th grade so glad to hear it again !
thank you so much i thought i was nuts too when i would ask people about it, but strangley i remember where i was the 1st time i heard this song at 4 years old. I did however hear it briefly on an episode of that 70's show. I never believed id find it thanks again.
There was another Singing nun in 1960's from Belgium. She was Jeanine Deckers, she sang "Dominique".....we had the record.....Her song is on RUclips.....
Haven't heard this since the 70's. Thanks for the upload.
I've been searching or it under Mama Cass or the Mamas and the Papas since it has such a similar sound, style and beat. So glad to hear it again.
I am 61 and I remember when this song came out, there was such a big ruckus, "Oh she should not do that, it is blasphemy" now listen to what is on the radio
In Connecticut, a really Catholic state with a huge polish population, AM radio stations played this endlessly when it came out. It was somewhat of a hit.
I have always loved this version
When I was 11 years old, we drove from Toronto (area) to the Boston area and back. On some radio station along the way, I remember that there were three songs on high rotation that made an impression. They were Seasons in Sun by Terry Jacks, Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede and this song. Like you, nobody else around me remembered it. I was thinking I might add this to a 70s playlist, but turns out -- I'm good.
I remember hearing this song when I was going to a Catholic school (though I'm not an RC) in the 4th grade from a kid carrying a small cassette player. I'm 54 now and finally found it!
I love it.
Ahhhhhhh my childhood 45 on RUclips
And here we are at the culmination of this grand stage play.
Morley power fuzz-wah pedal....early 70's guitarist's delight! Fender also had a fuzz-wah pedal that was pretty crunchy.
i really love this song
Thank you! 💖
In der Tat schön und gelungen ... Ohrwurm ... Our Father ...
I'm so happy to have found this on RUclips! My mother has it on a CD, but it's lost somewhere in her room, and I could never remember the words. So yay! :)
The sermon next Sunday at the Sebring Church of the Brethren, Sebring FL is " The Lords Prayer" so I will be leading this song. Surely many will remember it from 1974
Fantastic 👍. ❤️
I have found a treasure here!
This was very good reading, but it left me asking myself, does she still love Jesus? A dumb question I answered. You can’t stop loving Him once you know Him!
I love this!
A classic! Wow!!!
You saved my sanity, too! :)
I remember this, just not that it was so hauntingly beautiful.
I remember this being sung by our choir at St. John's and hearing it on CBC radio in the 1970s. If there was sheet music for this. I would be interested.
Gallopingalligator I remeber it too. But the Radio version was slightly different. In the radio versionThe Lords prayer was recited quickly in a monastic Gregorian chant. And sister mead recited it quickly to herself in Vernacular. Which was the way you were supposted to Pray when the mass was in Latin. Then the Song kicked in. However Gallo (GOD BESS) I also though I would never hear this song Again . Dominus Vobiscum!
Hall-ew-wood be thy name!,
It wasnt smooth sailing for her back then but it did make a big impression on me 50 years ago
RIP sister Janet
Me too! And I was unable to find it, either
Amen
Sister Janet Mead...
I had this song in my head the other day. I loved this song as a child. Thanks for sharing it. Is Sister mead still alive? I heard she questioned her faith after this song Was she still a nun after.
You're right.... same here
jesus is wanting his royalty check
This is a great song, but wasn't Jeanne Deckers (Dominique) "The Singing Nun"? Or were there two of them?
Howard be thy name!!! :)
Someone should mash this up with Justify Mu Love and put it over the video 😛
fuzz and wah how could it not be a hir
Does anyone know if there is sheet music for this? I used to have some back in the 70s
MUST...CLAW...MY..EARS...OFF...
lurch321 thank you lurch for your kind and reflective message. it truly reflects the spirituality so beautifully represented by this pean of western civilization...truly.indeed your very enlightened response is exactly the kind of thing id expect from a lover of this type of music...
This could have been used in Jesus Christ Superstar or Hair....
And that is why the young will not be brainwashed. Religion does not spread the truth, never did, never will. I give religion about 200 years. One can have spiritually and goodness by having faith in yourself and living by the golden rule. Simple. I do have hope for the world because I have faith in our young people. I am I an atheist? Of course. Peace.

Well global racial equality for one, it should still be a big deal but to modern society we have no problem abusing the rest of the world obviously for nationalistic gains, MLK remarked on this as well. It ultimately had little to do with religion as it is a logic deduced by rational thought & empathy. Something we all feel & are capable of.
Christianity has been around over 2,000 years. Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Your idea of what is "good" may be in direct opposition to others think is "good."
What religion did Stalin use? Hitler was into the occult, having rejected his Christian background. Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr, Maximillian Kolbe, etc., brought real Christian charity into the world so be careful that you don't paint with a wide brush. The abolitionist movement was also Christian based. I can give many more examples. Elizabeth Seton and Kaherine Drexel founded schools for the education of the poor and minorities.
What do you mean by the morality MLK advocated?
Did this song bring in the youngin's? NO
Truth brings them in, not music
Charles Manson ha faith in himself and thought he was doing "good." Stalin, Mao, Hitler, etc, all thought they were doing good and "lived their dreams."
People writing about it doesn't mean it's in any way true y'know? You wouldn't need religious liberty or equality if there was no religion to begin with :P but sure, as long as it pointlessly exists I'm all for protecting any & all people. & Reason & logic ISN'T a part of christianity, that's not to say you can't APPLY reason & logic to it, but the holy books are the most illogical & unreasonable works of fiction ever made, as are the beliefs that the stories in them are real.
Amen
