As a Dublin based rock guitarist, I can't tell you how cool this episode is and what it means to have Lizzy and Phil's legacy still appreciated and fondly remembered around the world. Thankyou, Tim for your continually great content! 🙏
Phil and every member of Thin Lizzy...are fucking LEGENDARY.
Don’t forget Eric Bell (played on Whiskey in the Jar), very underrated guitarist, who’s still playing
Bell was the guitarist for the first 3 albums. 'Whiskey' was a non-album single.
Those first few "Bell" albums have some real gems. I love the long version of the Rocker with the solo, Or Vagabond of the Western World
@@stiofan1 his solo on "the hero and the madman" is a top 10 solo for me
Just saw Eric Bell play a couple months ago at a Phil Lynott tribute in Dublin (with Brian Downey). A fantastic experience. Eric is getting pretty old and had to be guided through the crowd onto the stage, but he lit the place up with his playing. Go check hm out while you still can!
Eric's solo on The Rocker is EPIC!!🤘🤘
Along with Phil’s songwriting, the magic of Thin Lizzy (IMO) was the impeccable feel, pocket, and swing of Brian Downey. With all due respect to Robbo, Scott, Gary, Sykes, Eric Bell, and Snowy White, it didn’t really matter who was playing guitar as long as Phil was telling his stories and Downey was making our hands clap and toes tap.
Incredible drummer. Would be a buzz to play with him!
Yes that's the key to their success. Eventually you realise it's often the drummer that brought a lot of classic rock music to life. Giving it some "swing", and taken the whole band away from mathematically timed 1234. This inspires the musicians around them. A few other notable examples of this kind of huge influence, and sadly underrated contribution, were Ian Paice and certainly Bill Ward.
Downey KILLS it on Bad Reputation!🤘
That bar fight story ticks me off. What a wanker.
@@louiebee6745- He kills it on so many Lizzy songs! Massacre, Sitamoia, Emerald, Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed, Johnny, Opium Trail… basically everything he ever played on! Downey’s drumming was so crucial to Thin Lizzy, he should’ve had co-writing credit on everything, IMO. I still marvel watching videos at the way he looks so casual as he’s just crushing it, giving a clinic on technique, feel and timing. I think he’s one of the greatest rock drummers ever and his fills can absolutely make a song!
Tim - I believe that F in the The Boys Are Back is actually a Dm7.
Met Gary Moore two weeks after Phil Lynott died, in the street in my home town, Reading, England the same town John Sykes is from and know members of his family.
Lizzy are one of my very favourite bands of all time, saw them live a fair few times.
Live and dangerous for me is one of the very best live albums ever.
Tim has the greatest "I'm having fun" face when he plays.
Jailbreak is a desert island record for sure- I remember hearing that record when it came out in 76 around the same time as 2112- that summer was all about the new music and the stories in the songs- for Jailbreak, it seemed that every single track was gold- we would play the entire album start to finish without skipping any tracks. It's a moment in time that the music holds up. Phil is a legend! Thanks Tim Pierce :)
Lizzy were never quite as big or as loved in the USA as they were in Europe and here in the UK. There's a whole generation of men like me who, if you say 'Thin Lizzy', get a distant look in their eye.
"Tell me the legends of long ago, when the kings and queens would dance in the realm of the Black Rose"
Black Rose was IMO their greatest record...no shade to Robbo, but Gary Moore really killed it on that record...and he pushed Gorham to be better. I didn't know that the lead/solo in Waiting for An Alibi was actually Scott playing! Of course both the guys harmonized on the back half of it. But listening to some of the lead playing on the title track...transcendent!
The same way with Rory, he is still regarded in Europe. I heard a version of Phil and Rory playing “Philby”. Rory and Phil would try to drink each other under the table. Lol.
Brian Downey was just ridiculous with his pocket and feel on so many these as well. Just such crazy good players with incredible groove.
Robertson/Gorham combo was the best IMO. 'Emerald' and 'Still In Love With You' my favourites from that era. Wish I'd seen them live.
Agreed - best combo, although Tim missed the amazing Snowy White in his list of Lizzy guitarists, who is also one of my all time favourite players :)
Moore is my fave guitarist of all time, and yeah... Robbo/Gorham is the combo
I saw them first in Rochdale in 1975 then London 1978 magical
I was always a fan of the Snowy White/Scott Gorham era, too.
'Still in love with you' was played by Gary Moore, on the album 'Nightlife'. It also had guest vocals from Frankie Miller....
Saw them twice in 77 and 78. Even got a white label version of Parisian Walkways from Gary while queuing outside the Hammersmith Odeon.
Live and Dangerous still the best live album ever (up there with Frampton!)
Great to finally see a American RUclips channel talking about Thin Lizzy, well done Tim👌👌
Hi Tim. Having had the pleasure of playing with my good friend Philip Lynott and the other band members both as a solo artist and with Thin Lizzy I think it worth mentioning another friend of mine and great guitarist - Eric Bell - who was in the original Thin Lizzy when they were just a three-piece. Lizzy tuned down a half step - (mostly) - when they became a twin guitar band. I've always played what you're calling an F chord as a Dm7, as did Scott Gorham who I played with in Lizzy whenever I "guested" with them. It's great to see you giving Lizzy some credit! RIP Philip.
The imagination of the chordal interplay in “The Boys…” - the voicing, and the dual lead guitar, has always made this one of my favorite rock songs.
Great to see some Thin Lizzy love here. I also was late to the game, only dug into their catalog deep in the 2000s and they became one of my favorite bands ever. My favorite album ended up being "Fighting," the one before they broke out big with Jailbreak. They should have already been huge. Night Life was great, too, the one that got the classic duel-guitar lineup together.
Live and Dangerous is definitely one of my all-time favorite live records ever! And I think the live version of "Jailbreak" is better than the recorded version on the album Jailbreak.
The BBC session?
They’re both great but I think you’re right, although it’s very very very close
The same is true for many of their live versions, Still in Love with you is the best example of the live version surpassing the studio. imo.
As mentioned earlier - do not forget Eric Bell: TL's first guitarist back when they were a "power trio " - the guitar work on The Rocker is immense. The video that went with the song was great also - basic but fitted the song perfectly.
Met him as a teenage gatecrasher at a gig in 81… Billy Idol was acting cool, Noddy Holder told me to f*xk off…Phil sat me down with his girlfriend, went to the bar to get the beers in and bought the beer all night and we had the craic until late… Awesome chap!
Probably the most underrated band of all time, should have been huge.
They were just not in north america
@@jonholland6067 Phil is dead for over 35 years, so it's not TL. ButI get it. The music is great. But Gorham should not have called it TL. It's Black Star Riders now isn't it?
Watching Tim fill with joy while playing makes me a little happy. Not much else besides dogs can do that. Thanks Tim!
Thin Lizzy were the best ever. Saw them live the 5 last years until their breakup in 83…..fantastic every time.
Super cool solo over verse 2, Tim 😊 love your channel
Tim, it is a joy to watch you having fun playing and making tribute to this classic band. You forgot to mention Eric Bell who was very important for the band's earliest incarnation. Later Thin Lizzy featured Snowy White (Known for being a touring member of Pink Floyd). On a side note : Brian Downey is the swingiest of all rock drummers.
This was excellent Tim. We ‘Lizzy fans appreciate this video. And for another treat folks- listen to the live recording of The Rocker from their “Life/Live” album recorded in 1983. At the end of the song , Phil introduces the band and it’s like a Thin Lizzy reunion. He mentions Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, John Sykes, Brian Robertson & Gary Moore. Can you imagine seeing all those guys on one stage??? Wow!
Tim - so crazy you posted this. I've been on a huge Thin Lizzy kick all this year, rediscovering a bunch of overlooked songs from their catalog. Man - they were quite an outfit! Black Rose, Cowboy Song, Downtown Sundown, Southbound are just a few of my faves. Thanks so much for giving them props!
Thanks so much for the comment, I am discovering so much good music from them!
Loved Emerald
'Border Line' is one of my favorites.
A Favorite band since back in the day. Met Damon Johnson super talent and super human being good guy. Listened to Richie Havens play acoustic (guild) version of boys are back in town in the 80’s. Great great musicians. Cowboy Song my personal favorite.
My first and second gigs was seeing Thin Lizzy at The Odeon, Birmingham .. China Town tour then the Renegade tour .. brilliant ! Snowy White and Scott Gorham ..
One thing I think is important to mention about Thin Lizzy is that they were infinitely better live. For example, compare the studio version of Still in Love With You to the version from Live and Dangerous. Scott Gorham’s guitar solo at the end makes me cry even 30 years later
Gary Moore played on the studio version of Still In Love With You. I agree, though, that the live version is better. Brian Robertson copied Moore's solo almost note for note but it sounds very soulful.
@@Q247247 I really like Scott Gorham's solo on the live version, but for me Gary Moore's second solo on the studio version is incredible, probably the best solo on an album that is crammed full of great solos.
Thin Lizzy, specially live, unbelievable fantastic. These Twin guitar arrangements are amazing.
The "Live and Dangerous" Album is, in my opinion, one of the best on the Planet.
The two albums with Snowy White - Chinatown and Renegade - are often overlooked but have some of Lizzy’s best material imho.
Phils phrasing on the vocals was amazing. Not many cover bands get that right when they play Lizzy stuff.
Anybody see Midge Ure playing for Lizzy?
Me
Isn’t Lizzy the coolest underrated band of the 70s ? 😎
Also Man, a bluesy progressive band from Wales
"Underrated" is overrated.
They were one of my 3 favourite bands back in the day. I saw them 5 times from 1977-83👀
I hope Tim plays Emerald.
Lizzy is one of the coolest bands ever, of any era, but it’s hard to see them as underrated when Phil Lynott died in 1986, yet here we all are, expressing our love and respect for the music they made forty to fifty years ago!
Absolutely. I thought they were just way huge at the time. Loved the twin guitar harmonies!!!!
Hell yeah!! I was going down the rabbit hole of Thin Lizzy a couple of months ago. Must have been nostalgia but I used to have the album Thunder and Lighting. Such a powerhouse is Thin Lizzy with so many remarkable musicians and what a voice indeed. Phil has a beautiful delivery and tone. So effortless while surrounded by intensity and organised chaos . If only those who are deceased from this band could be here for the accolades they so justly deserve.
Thanks for this, Tim. Check out the whole "Black Rose" album. My favorite. Furious playing by Moore and Gorham. Also, "Wild One", a great track. So many classics by a band that never got the attention they deserved. "The Sun Goes Down" is a late period Lizzy gem.
Totally agree - John Sykes guitar on that song is astounding
Scott played the solo on The Sun Goes Down.
Wild One is to me one of the best rock songs since the music began. Definitely in my top 50.
“The Sun Goes Down” is a brilliant, amazing tune. But it hits so deep, it’s almost painful to listen to, as if Phil subconsciously knew his own fate.
The “Johnny the Fox” album was really good, too.
got to see lizzy in philly in 1978ish? hitch hiked about 100 miles to go, caught a ride back to the area I lived in new jersey and only had to walk about 7 miles home. great memories of a great show.....
Easily one of the best bands ever. So many epic songs, spanning different styles and genres.
Life long Thin Lizzy fan..Great seeing you giving them some love, breaking down the song and giving the old Tim Pierce treatment....
Great video, you are such a fantastic musician, Tim!! Thank you very much! Please let us not forget Eric Bell, who is a great guitar player as well. I love Thin Lizzy!!
Definitely support the shout out for EB. It may be the case that Whiskey in the Jar is not so well known in the US but here in the UK it stands shoulder to shoulder with The Boys Are Back In Town. Now I really must go and learn the rest of the solo!!
The greatest to ever do it! ‘Still In Love With You’, the live version 🙌
Johnny the Fox LP is my favorite. So many great tunes. Also had a Hoodoo Rhythm Devils reference in the lyrics!
I’m with you. I love that album. “Borderline” is still such an amazing song. You can feel the heartache in it.
Thanks a million for this one Tim! Life long Thin Lizzy fan and it is great when a fantastic player like yourself acknowledges their worth. Glad you found them. Cheers! And I dig your channel. I take weekly in person lessons and if I ever stop I will surely consider your masterclasses! Btw, my guitar playing friends all dig your channel too.
Thin Lizzy were, and always will be my all time favourite band. They had everything that is required to become a 'classic' band. Brilliant songwriting, beautiful unique vocal delivery, brilliant guitarists who complemented each others playing style, and a metronome-like drummer. They couldn't fail! That is why it remains a mystery as to why they weren't massive worldwide. Thanks Tim for doing this feature.
Love Thin Izzy! My old favorite was "Johnny" unusual but unique. Just like Phil. Sad he died so young 😢. He lived like a rock star ⭐✨. Partied till late, was known to be up 4 am ready to do it again non stop.. RIP
As usual your sound is completely amazing on this. I’m a huge Lizzie fan and you played wonderfully along with them! Love your work!
for as well known as thin lizzy is, they’re still a massively underrated band. one of the best for sure
Oh man, I couldn't click fast enough when I saw that this was about Thin Lizzy.. Man, that brings back some memories.. I was crazy about Phil too.. What a writer and what a great band.. They do sound better than any of todays bands.. The two guitar thing was so amazing back then especially! I never got to see them, but they never got to play a lot because of all the problems and Phil being a troubled man sadly.. John Sykes was my favorite, but I love all of the guitarists they had! Just great guitar players!
The song suicide is one of my favorites to play as well.. What great stuff.. Thanks Tim, from Tim!
Met all the boys when threy toured in 2009 with 3 of ther originals and Viv Campbell on lead. Great guys!
Used to play “Boys Are Back In Town” in a cover band back in the 80’s. Never got tired of it!
Another amazingly informational video with you incredible playing. I continue to learn so much from you! Thank you🙏!
I did this song every night.... seven nights a week....for a year straight in a Bar called B.Js in beautiful down town Apache Junction...I still love playing that song and I was amazed at the whole structure of this Master Piece of a song !!!! ❤❤❤
Apache junction Arizona the club called BJ's
Lizzy absolutely changed how I play guitar and listen to music. This was a treat! Robbo is very possibly my favorite guitarist of all time, and you really nailed some of his isms here, Tim! Thanks for another great video!
Gorham/Robertson combination was so tasty... so signature. The harmonized guitar in rock had been done before, and has been done after, but never quite as effectively and seminal as this.
It was great to see you give kudos to Steve Maase. Steve definitely influenced a lot of us ABQ kids, and quite a few of us went on with that knowledge to teach countless others. When I left Luchetti's to start touring, Steve moved into the lesson studio I was using and continued teaching there for years.
Black Rose with Moore on guitar is great stuff. My first Lizzy was the Chinatown album, featuring Snowy White alongside Scott. Still two of my all time rock favourites
Cowboy Song was the anthem of my teenage years. So sad how Phil imploded on himself. In my opinion, one of the most underrated of songwriters as well as musicians
LOVE LOVE LOVE Thin Lizzy! Bell, Gorham, Robbo, GARY MOORE, JOHN SYKES! Even Snowy White. Tim, you need to check out Black Rose and Thunder and Lightning.
all that pretty chord work disguised in HEAVY rock tunes. for the longest time i thought the early gtr on 'dancing in the moonlight' was a horn section. then when the horn section DOES come in the gtr just compliments it so well instead of just doubling the line. boy i love thin lizzy
So cool. I'm from Louisville and I never knew my city helped break Thin Lizzy. Great history Tim and really great playing....🎸😎
I learned every song on Live and Dangerous as a wide eyed 16 year old and along with Gary Moore and John Sykes..they defined the possibilities and joy of the Pentatonic scale..and Phil Lynott’s songwriting and Brian Downey’s sense of swing..HUGE influences!!
Massive Lizzy fan. Every album is great, and they have a ton of deep cuts that are spectacular. Very fun to play also! Bad Reputation might be my favourite.
Aloways loved thier music. Call them my favorite Rock Ballad Band. Have to convince my friends that are Mettalica fans - that Metalica loves this band. They just know The Boys are Back in Town.. So many more great songs!!! My Dedication
Thanks Tim. Well done = Merry Christmas!
My dad brought me up listening to classic rock, and we have always loved Thin Lizzy!🤩
I used to bring a cassette player to school just to listen to them, and when mp3 players became a thing I brought it with me everywhere, especially to hype myself up before school sports.. man those early days discovering music, being moved by the non-common chord progressions and playing around with time signatures introduced to me by classic rock are fond memories of mine
Thanks Tim. Happy Holidays
Brian Robertson is a massively underrated guitarist - there’s a bit of Schenker about him. Check out the album he did with Motörhead - Another Perfect day is for me, the best ‘head album (many would disagree) because of Robo’s melody and layering.
Thin Lizzy are the best rock band of all time! I spent so much of my youth listening to them. They had so many great guitarists in them, and the live album is just the best!
Thx Tim. You are one of my favourite guuitarplayers. It's all so tasteful and yes: you know your influences so well...
It’s only money baby.! One of my favorites back in the day.
"Still In Love With You" - incredible. And what a band.
One of my best friends and I got to see Lizzy live in Japan on Chinatown tour. Fantastic show. It is available on net and here on the tube too. The soundboard guy took us backstage after the show. We got to hang out with the band for a couple hours afterward. All very humble. No rock star BS. Autos all around and I got my photo snapped with Phil, his arm around me! Phil thanked us for being there. We chatted a long time with Brain about all sorts of things.
Thin Lizzy are the greatest band to every come out of Ireland. Great content as always Tim.
I so agree.
don't forget Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore though.....
Tim, once again, you take a song from my young(er) days that I never cared to listen to and give me reasons to like it or even love it.
I am a trumpet, French horn, bass player and that means I don't watch because of the gadgets, but because you are so fun to watch and listen to.
Thank you.
P.S. Tim I am teaching guitar to three (ages 10,12,13,) absolute beginners. Do you think your beginner videos are a good fit with three young girls with zero music or musical instrument knowledge.
Thanks again
My nickname comes from "Johnny the Fox meets Jimmy the Weed" 😉. Phil's voice was so warm, whatever hi sang.
And you know man, no one but Lizzy and Phil was going to do a song like that!
I did what you just did, about a year ago. I really went on a Thin Lizzy deep dive love fest last year, looking for anything they did, especially live. These cats were wayyyyy cool.
Tim, just saw your recent vid with Rick Beato. I thought I had subscribed to your channel, but realized I hadn’t.
Subscribed! You’re not only a supreme session guitarist, you’ve got a unique perspective and comfortable style.
Looking forward to watching more! 👍
It's Tim Lizzie! Just bought the Masterclass, love it.
O thank you so much tim you really nail it. Your commentary is only second to your playing. You are a treasure sir and thank you for sharing how your gifts with us.
Thin Lizzy is one of the greatest two guitar bands ever. Robertson and Gorham were the original dueling guitarists and were so inspiring. Two Les Paul wielding axemen that carved out some amazing melodies. Among others, I know stories that Dime used to blast TL in Pantera's dressing room before shows.
I am from East Kilbride, Robbo used to work in a kids clothes shop that doubled as a music store. I heard him play when I was walking by , I was 13 , it was 1971, it was Robbo he was 16 then, he was already way ahead of where I had heard locally, he was way ahead of anything I had seen live, in my locality, I was already into wishbone ash/ABB/Led Zep/ Yes / Moutain/Jethro Tull etc.
Wow...how fantastic to see that played again and nailed. FANTASTIC.
Great playing Tim, I've always loved those chords on The Boys are back in Town and your obvious enjoyment made it even better. You should team up with Scott Gorham who still flies the Thin Lizzy flag. There's still a lot of love out there for Lizzy and another one-off concert would be just the job. Phil Lynott was a such a towering presence on stage and did you know that there's a statue of him in Dublin !. My only slight disappointment with your film is that you didn't play Waiting for an Alibi. Maybe another time.
That LP looks and sounds absolutely amazing Tim. Played amazingly also 🔥
Soon as I get sum $ Tim,I'm getting the master class.I don't care if I have to pay full price.Been out of work 4 a year and a half taking care of my mother. She's is al;ot better.thanks for all the prayers.
You have a really great natural ability to add to what’s already great, thanks for sharing!
Cowboy Song is my favorite from that album!
Thin Lizzy songs like this take me back to a time. They are mood altering as well.
Saw them open air at Cardiff Castle in 1976 they supported 10cc, that was a fantastic summer for music, from that day I hungered for their guitar sound!
Story Tellers... Rick Springfield. He had a really great guitar player early on when he played live. Don't know what happened to him, think he was from somewhere in New Mexico.
That would be tim?
The original solo of Still in love with you from the Nightlife album with Robertson/Gorham was from an earlier demo with Gary Moore; Lynott insisted on keeping that version and transferred it to the multitrack so the rest of the band had to play to that, quite a feat and one of my favourite solos ever
Man your playing is so friggin sweet i love hearing you play
Solo on "Romeo and the Lonely Girl.".
Blasting!!!!!
So many Thin Lizzy songs fly under the radar and have so many awesome grooves and riffs… Waiting For An Alibi, Bad Reputation, Angel From The Coast, Ballad Of A Hard Man, Toughest Street In Town, Got To Give It Up, Opium Trail…
Less than a minute and you've made my day with your enthusiasm and expressions.
Awesome video on TL. I know my Guy Eric at Eric's Guitar Repair Swears by Jescar. I got the 57110 I Love it on my 83 Dan Smith Natural Strat 4 Bolt Floyd Rose. 😁
We covered some Lizzy in the early 80s. On Jailbreak I used the wah wah for the fills and coming out of the bridge I just stood on it. Great band and tons of fun to cover. I saw them open for Kansas with the original lineup. No disrespect to Kansas but they took no prisoners. Left it all out there. I’m really enjoying Tim’s channel.
Hi. This was cool. Lizzy´s my favorite band after The Beatles. Love every album, every song. Phil was such a great songwriter. A real poet. I just discovered your channel. Looks great.
I saw them at the Forum opening for Queen - One of the guitarists (I think Scott, I believe) was "Sick" that night, so Phil got an old mate to fill in that night: Gary Moore! I thought seeing Queen was going to be the highlight of the evening, but the surprise of Moore was a historic moment for me.
Lizzy has been the soundtrack to large part of my adult life. You just close your eyes and the storytelling takes you somewhere else... and so many less known gems.. ballad of a hard man, opium trail, the sun goes down, Johnny....
Thanks sooo much, Tim for the deep dive into Lizzy.
Lizzy has for decades been one of my very fave bands and their ‘Jailbreak’ album was actually the very first album I ever bought and the whole album still sounds fantastic today!
Phil and Sykes changed my life the same way Ozzy and Randy did. Thunder and lightning is an incredible album.
So is "Life". I still listen to it all the time.
My favorite Lizzy record
My all time favorite guitar song. Thanks!
