Are You Lonesome Tonight? Al Jolson & Elvis Presley Duet

  • So many don't know that Elvis' version of ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT was heavily based on Al Jolson's recording on it from 1948. It's said that Elvis recorded this song because his mother loved Jolson's version so much.
Anyway, attempts have been made over the years to combine both recordings for a Jolson/Elvis duet, but due to both versions being in different keys, many said it was impossible.
Well, thanks to some of these new AI programs that allow you to separate vocals from recordings, I was able to create my best attempt at combining them for a duet that FOR SURE would have happened if Jolson had lived into the TV era.
I had to pitch shift every aspect of these recordings to make them fit - Jolson's voice, Elvis' voice as well as the backing track. Also had to play with Jolson's vocals to help them "fit" Elvis' phrasing a bit more. I also added a bit of studio chatter at the beginning to make it feel more "real". Elvis' vocals are also a combination of 2 different takes of that song as well.

@@grouchosays interesting theory. Care to explain how you know its not Al?

@@nigeldreinerI was a professional musician for 50 years. I have devoted my life to listening to music, instruments and voices carefully. While I would never claim infallibility I am close. Second, I have been listening to Al since around 1958. I know the sound of his voice extremely well. That’s not his voice. Not enough schmaltz. Not nasal enough. Third, I have devoted my life to reading about the careers of iconic performers. I have never heard of a duet of Elvis and Al. Elvis and Sinatra yes. Elvis and AL no. Just my 2 cents.

@grouchosays well it absolutely is Al. His voice was just pitched up a key and Elvis was pitched down a key so they would match.

I have mused how sad it was Al Jolson had died before Presley became a star. I thought they would have done some duets together, as Al and Bing had before. I guess I was not the only one who thought so!

Pure magic. I could try to be more evaluative and suggest that Jolson's voice could have used a little volume to add to his natural warmth and depth of presentation. But this was simply magic for the few moments that it lasted as a performance and the great memory it leaves behind.,

This did not include the spoken part by each artist. those two were the same because Elvis used exactly the same lyrics and spoken past as Jolson's. However, this creation is absolute genious. Elvis also recorded "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" in the same manner as The Ink Spots.

Jolson worked harder than anyone perfecting his talent. Nothing phony about him. What you saw & heard is what you got like it or not. I’m 80 years old and his voice still brings chill bumps on my neck. There is none like Jolson and never will be. Everyone has their likes & dislikes, but a person with class keeps their criticism of others to themselves.
