    I feel this era was heavily overshadowed by Group B. Don't get me wrong, I love Group B as much as the next guy (The Sport Quattro and The RS200 being two of my all time favourite cars should be a good indication of that) But when looking back on days of rallying past people just tend to overlook the late eighties and early 90s. There were some awesome cars here, like the Lancer Evo, the Impreza 555, the Celica GT-Four, the Escort RS Cosworth and of course the Delta HF Integrale. And then there were the drivers, Mcrae, Makkinen, Sainz, Kankkunen etc. And of course you can't overlook the much-improved safety standards. There's a reason Group B was banned, and Group A fixed that.

    Toyota's golden years. Really wish they kept making Celica GT4s

    • @smac919
      @smac919 4 года назад +21

      They were also ingeniously cheating in those golden years with those Celicas and got caught in 95 lol. The WRC had restrictor donuts that would go in the intakes to reduce airflow.. The way Toyota cheated was they made it so when you tighten the hose clamp for the restrictor, it pushed inward, making air bypass the restrictor gaining +50hp and whenever the WRC would go to check the cars, they would loosen the hose clamp, moving the restrictor back into place, and when they open it, all seems correct. The only reason Toyota was caught was from a snitch.. they probably would have gotten away with it all if it werent for that. It's crazy that Colin McRae was keeping up and even beating the cheating Celicas.

      Don't talk silly, the ST185 GTfour was scrutineered and deemed legal by FIA scrutineers after EACH race between 1992 to 1995. Even in December 1995 Kankkunen himself said that the ST205 of the official season was very different from the one he tested in December 1994. He said that, when he did the test (with both 185 and 205), he noticed them very Similar, but the 205, despite being lighter, was very nervous compared to the 185 and lacked of "final speed", which evidently Toyota took care of "solving" even at the cost of cheating. The ST185 was not disqualified from that season BECAUSE IT WAS LEGAL and its last WRC victory in the safari rally of 1995 was not taken away from it.

    • @AntonyWarmbold
      @AntonyWarmbold 4 года назад +1

      Some people at the high end of the sport were convinced or very suspicious about Toyota's cheating with that car, but nobody at FIA knew where to look and how to catch them. The difficulty was catching them red handed because they did not cheat all the time. The cars were always legal at the start and finish, it was during the rally at specific moments that things happened. In those days service was all over the place and it was possible to "work" on a car without FIA seeing it.

    • @nigel561
      @nigel561 4 года назад +8

      @@AntonyWarmbold Sorry, but you have no idea. Since group B scandals (like Audi's swaps between stages, Lancia's misterious hiden nitrogen in rollcages, Peugeot's "complete overhaul services", etc), FIA adopted rigurous measures for car scrutineers and change the rules for ever. After that, all cars were scrutineed UNTIL THE LAST NUT, another change was that all Teams had to work in the car without any restriction for Official Scrutineers (only for other teams gossipers). That was exactly the reason for Toyota to make a perfectly hidden cheating device inside the CT20b of the ST205 GTfour, that only could have been seen by someone very skilled, due to a little fracture in the restrictor plate (most ingenious device ever). After the cheat was discovered, FIA paralized Toyota's rallyes activities and went to TTE workshop to review ST185 and ST165 models and its connection with the CT20b (Lancia was the first interested in ban Toyota's tittles, due to the lack of sales of delta and other models ). FIA saw that CT26 (of the 1st and 2nd gen) couldn't receive that device because turbo spool was slower than ct20b, it has less pressure capacity and it would recquire a complete modification of the lub system and even of the exhaust manifold, to achieve an interesting amount of power (even today), which would be very easy to see and to ban. That is the reason of why FIA decided to keep Toyota's titles and all the victorys of ST165 and ST185 GTFours, even the last at Safari rally of 1995 (with the same engine as the 93 season).
