YES ! I was wanting the horns to come back too, and some superb sailing footage to go with it. Like the good ol' days. of last year ; ) Thank you Florian! And your description of the sleep/less phase was spot on. Craving just to sleep. Those power naps are amazing, how you can fall so quickly into what feels like dreaming ( maybe it's half hallucination!) and recharge. Great show
Your analysis of sleep during passages for single handed sailing is spot on. I typically set my alarm for 15-20 minutes, get up scan the horizon check AIS, if I have the radar on I’ll check that. Then back to sleep for 15-20. If I’m far enough offshore, out of the shipping areas, I’ll extend my sleep time to 1-2 hours. When I do this I’ll have my radar on as another warning.
Amazing intro! 3 minutes of incredible footage, horns and the coffee thing. "Because you can!". And probably against the ortodoxyof YT that demands everything to be fast. You won a fan. Well done!
Conrad is an example of a situation where the sailor is the weakest link. Best wishes to all these extraordinary sailors. I hope all stay safe and well
This is so great! Your knowledge and experience, combined with a very professionally delivered presentation has just made Sea Wolf my go to, for this race. Big thanks from the California coast.
Excellent report, really interesting regarding psychology of sleep.. an area thats perhaps the most important factor.. relatively simple decisions, actions taking on another form. So i'm gathering this race for the most part is purely about power naps "micro rests". What a profound challenge these 40 people take on.
First of all, YES to the horns. Though the intro is a bit long, I can zip ahead, so no problem. Secondly, as OCTeahead on RUclips, I fully approve of your switch from coffee to tea! Some sailing questions: 1) Did Clarisse lose her big genniker overboard, or just drop it in the water and recover it? 2) Can you give a rundown one boat per day - it’s history of owners, names, races, etc? 3) Is Weores sailing dead into the wind to the east of Madere? How can he do that? 4) What's the story on Xu's low speed? Now some VG tracker questions: 1) When I click on a boat, their path appears, but I can’t figure out how to get rid if it. 2) What time is it on the tracker? Is it the time that appears as “Report on...” on each skipper report along the left edge, or is it the time that appears along the bottom where we can “re-watch” the entire race at various speeds? 3) How are you drawing on the tracker?
Low wind in the 3 or 4 following days is good for the non foiling boats. Maybe going to the coast of Africa is best option, sailing always in some wind at the expense of making more miles because the next waypoint is the most eastern coast of Brazil. It would be interesting seeing a split, half of the fleet going southwest and the other half going southeast. But most probably they are not going to split because it's risky to abandon the route that the first boats are sailing at.
Thanks again for a great video! Watching it +/- +12 hours compared to their position in your video. And indeed the leader pack seems to go straight for the possibly less windy route, but closer to where you want to end up. However Jean le Cam and maybe also Conrad Colman are way more east and might be opting for the other route. Interesting to follow!
yeh liked it. watched the first 2:40 again for the horns and the rig sailing...so much fun, with you for the duration of race. cheers from california north coastal
I am a firefighter and not a sailor at all but came across this race 2 editions ago when Alex Thompson was racing Hugo Boss. I love this race!! And I have been following it on Sea Wolves, which is excellent coverage. But today’s intro was wicked!!! Love the long shots of the boats ripping. Thanks for that!! One comment, can you please add captions when the skippers are talking to the camera as it’s sometimes very hard to understand what they are saying and the CC on RUclips cannot seem to do it.
Could you summarize how much outside help the skippers get in routing? Do they have access to all the online weather apps? Do they have access to more, like an onshore weather coach?
The skippers are allowed technical advice for fixing broken equipment. That is it. If they moor to a dock, they are out; if they get navigation advice, they are out; if they receive food or equipment from someone else, they are out.
Horns tell us “The HUNT Is ON !!” I appreciate the inside the boat views, Pip in a Spag Bowl of rope; as well as the route planning and weather analysis.
Super looong horns! Finally a top of a maaaaast over 10 seconds mast from BV drone!!! Someone will raise the camera and film top from the deck or cockpit soooon?
Epic episode! Great intro. Really gives a baptism into the power and speed. Great insights on the sleep. And loved the tactical logic for route planning. You are now defiantly on full form. Keep it up. The Scottish Seawolves send their regards. We have a growing WhatsApp group discussing the race. Names in Honour of your channel. Vendee Globe Seawolves group. Keep it up!
I think if any wanted to go east and risk it they would've gybed off already as that would've been faster with the left shift coming, so I reckon they're all going west. Would be nice to see someone risk it though, could be a crucial decision
The opening sequence with the horns was great. I also enjoyed the analysis of the sailors' mental state during the race. Question: Is there a different "category" for foilers and non-foiling sailboats?
Putting a lot of faith (and pressure) on the official weather partner, PredictWind service. Will see how it shakes out. Science and faith, odd bedfellows.
Re: Sleep. NASA has determined that the optimum time for napping is 26 minutes. That amount of sleep is the most effective for improving fatigue and cognitive abilities when long periods of sleep are not possible. The work was done by assessing various cognitive abilities in astronauts on the space station. Interesting comparing the problems of long distance sailors and how the demands on them are similar to those on astronauts.
Nice job on finding this data. It does seem counter-intuitive however to compare 2 highly stressful situations. The astronauts are literally micromanaged minute by minute with Big Brother operating them remotely. Not so in the Vendee. Furthermore the Vendee is like the Astronauts doing a perpetual Launch or Re-entry sequence with all the noise, dynamic bouncing around and chaos that they bring. There is no off switch for the Sailors. And they are self managed....... I know which is easier and which is tougher. NASA would not agree.... Vendee is more akin to constant battle fatigue. YMMV.
Of course what do I know but I would be tempted to go south now, stay east of those islands where the green persists and turn west in the better pressure south of the islands. You should be at the dead spot in more like 50 hours, no? Even though you said bad idea!
Beginner question: How does the tracker determin who is first? Is it the one who is most south, or the one who has gone the furthest distance in a straight line from the start? or does it have to do with how far along you are along the ideal route (red lines)?
join us in the chat during the show, or let us know in the comments what you think the better course is?

Great show
The first sequence was breathtaking…. most beautiful, thanks a lot
Thank you so much. That intro is mindblowing, can‘t stop my tears running. It hits so deep in my heart, WOW 🤩.
:)
Classic entry with Horns , great sounds of boat sailing and Coffee. Cannot get better than that.
It was tea 🤷
Awesome footage thank you
I love the footage and the horns at the start. I'm really enjoying your coverage of the race so far.
thank you :)
An IMOCA at full chat never gets old. The power! The speed!

So interesting to hear your experience with sleep! Your insight and experience really helps understand the vg skippers! Thanks! ❤

Tea!
Thank you :)
Horns magnificent Florian! With Campari in hand !
Love the horns, prefer coffee though! Really appreciating the access to the full Vendee video footage -great work 😄😄
I love the horn and sailing Sound again. Lovely. 🎉
Geez, I loved that intro!!!
Conrad is an example of a situation where the sailor is the weakest link. Best wishes to all these extraordinary sailors. I hope all stay safe and well
So grateful for your detailed, comprehensive, daily updates, Florian!!!! So much fun. Thank you!
Thank you :)
Fantastic opening! MORE PLEASE!
Love the horns! Cheers!
Such an incredible prologue… pure delight…
:)
So good with the horns and what a video shoot. You are very good at how you cover this fantastic race ♥️
thank you

great opening sequence Florian
LOVED ITTTT THE HORNES ARE BACCCCKKK!!!! No words just sailing and horns!!! Thank youuuu
Awesome clips , great horn 🤙
Thank you for such excellent coverage and commentary bringing together the best bits from the boats and your experienced insights combined…
First of all, YES to the horns. Though the intro is a bit long, I can zip ahead, so no problem.

Some sailing questions:
1) Did Clarisse lose her big genniker overboard, or just drop it in the water and recover it?

3) How are you drawing on the tracker?
to 1: Clarisse lost her big gennaker off the coast of Portugal
to 4: Xu sprained his ankle, so the poor sailor is quite handicapped.
Amazing shots of Bureau Vallee!
❤ the horns! Your coverage is superb, thanks so much!
Best channel!
Your commentary and discussion along with the awesome clips makes for wonderful coverage.
And the Intro again and again and again…..goosebumps 😍
:)
so glad to hear the clarion horns. you do good work sir!
Thank you

This is my second Vendee Globe and it is increasingly interesting to speculate with you on what all the skippers strategies will be!!
well done
yeh liked it. watched the first 2:40 again for the horns and the rig sailing...so much fun, with you for the duration of race. cheers from california north coastal
good to have you on board :)
Thank you for the horn!!! Reminds of my ancor point when everybody got covid-mad. Florian you are Superb!!!
your vivid micro-resting description reminds me exactly of this experience during military/officer training ❤ PS loved the horns & footage

Very interesting insights into sleeping, Florian, danke!
Excellent coverage

As far as I know it is completely forbidden to get any external advice about the routing...

intro melted me
Horns tell us “The HUNT Is ON !!” I appreciate the inside the boat views, Pip in a Spag Bowl of rope; as well as the route planning and weather analysis.
Great to hear again the starting hunting call sequence. . .
good show Florian. Thank you for the work you put into this.
Thanks for you support :)
great analysis of sleep depravation. Like a 5 year old having a nap at 4 PM, he'll be up till midnight, lol
People can’t understand how I sail for so long single handed , sailors are a special breed
SW…SWW…and keep going 💪😜 Solo sailing…no rest…it’s crazy! One day more of racing; Good job, man!
Wonderful opening video!!
Great opening. Inspired. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Superb opening. Mesmerising footage. Loved the French horns. Bravo.
thank you.
Nice to have the horns back.
Super looong horns! Finally a top of a maaaaast over 10 seconds mast from BV drone!!! Someone will raise the camera and film top from the deck or cockpit soooon?
The intro was epic!
Great Videos! It would be very interesting if you could do a series in which you briefly introduce all the participants.
Fantastic Episode
Now that's the intro that we're looking for FIVE STARS.
Thank you :)
Thank you Mr Wolf.
Thank you Dundee :) (fav movie)
So much fun! Reality in an unreal world 😂
You do a realy fantastic job, thank you very much !!!
Thank you
Awesome loved that!
That intro was incredible!
Cheers! I am drinking Kona coffee on my coffee farm in Hawaii.
amazing :)

Horn of Gondor
:)
Well done.
Excelent comments about sleep management , very well expose
I think if any wanted to go east and risk it they would've gybed off already as that would've been faster with the left shift coming, so I reckon they're all going west. Would be nice to see someone risk it though, could be a crucial decision
The only problem I have with the intro is the fact that it isn't from Vandee Globe ;) Otherwise great shots.
(It was shot just before the race)
Very nice!
When I was in the military, we would get smoke-breaks during training and I could get a Power Nap in 10 minutes and felt energized again. 🤣
Jean Le Cam turned South as soon as he passed Madère (again).
Isn't this where he separated from the fleet to take the lead during the last race ?
Interesting perspective on sleep.
Awesome Intro, Thank you
Beautiful openings scene!
good analysis Sea wolves….
you remind me of the french course; COFEE BREAK
Thank you for the updates!
Thanks! Andrew
Loved it, thank you!
extremely good explanation, as always
The opening sequence with the horns was great. I also enjoyed the analysis of the sailors' mental state during the race.
Question: Is there a different "category" for foilers and non-foiling sailboats?
no its one class
Beautiful introduction ❤
Thank you :)
Outstanding episode today. Keep it up
Thank you go west main on the port👍
Thanks for your nice analysis!
Putting a lot of faith (and pressure) on the official weather partner, PredictWind service. Will see how it shakes out. Science and faith, odd bedfellows.
I swing in solo sailing after the time I over sleep mostly in day 3 after that I’m good for a week or more with the power naps
Very good analyzes,bravo.

Ow my! That intro!! Awesome!!! great job my friend thanks for sharing with us
Very interesting strategic positioning analysis. Are the skippers getting input from their shore based teams?
no input allowed from teams at all. NO help!
Horns! Yes!
This is where Jean Le Cam will excel.
nice...I missed it. Horns and coffee, updates. Sea wolves. What else?
I love T ❤
Go West!
