    I'll never forget the streetlight regulations I saw while living in Tucson, AZ where the biggest local Dark Sky Lobby in North America exists. The lights point down away from the sky. Many are orange colored. And swaths of neighborhoods (even sketchy ones) were dark from a lack of streetlights, or had intermittent streetlights. And the Starparties at the UofA in the mall outside the Astrophysics Dept were next level - guys with big Astrophysics Brand Refracting Telescopes.

    • @urduib
      @urduib 14 дней назад +1

      Here in Denmark we started pointing down lights or shielding them over 10 years ago.
      This new study is VERY interesting. Turns out that lights pointing up kills insects in billions each night. They try to fly parallel to the light and since it´s a circle they adjust millions of times getting tired and burning out energy so they die. If you point the lights down, close to a flat surface like a wall or even the pole the lights are installed on, you will break their pattern and they can escape the death spiral (The pole need to be to the side of the light, not in the middle and designed the right way to break the light). I have the article in Danish somewhere, very important information if we want to preserve our insects and birds and fauna, Heck lets say NATURE itself.

    Mid rolls can still happen if RUclips is closed partway through the video. I'm not sure about the specifics for mobile but it's probably when the YT app gets fully closed (not just suspended). This happens to me for many videos and the ads play either when the video resumes or when the buffered video (from before closing) runs out. To users this looks like a mod-roll ad, but to YT it's playing the ad when it first fetched video data this session (last session was forgotten because the app closed or was OS terminated).

    Where I grew up in Australia the stars were and still are incredible there. I remember there used to be sodium lamps in areas that massively reduced light pollution cause they only emit a few wavelengths but they're not a thing anymore, maybe they used more electricity. But living in the city now there are very few stars visible. I always think how could people let this happen to our night sky. Humanity has always looked at the stars up until we decided electric lighting was more important. In the outback you always see satellites going over and now the starlink chains too, they are nothing for back yard enthusiasts like you barely see anything at all in the city by comparison, the international space station is fun to see too.

Could this idea of a relatively gentle contact (presumably due to closely matched relative movement) be applied to re-entry paths to reduce the descent speed through the atmosphere and the destructive heat generated, maybe reducing the need for technically challenging heat shields?

      @@frasercain A faint bit of the outer arm is all we can see up here in northern Sweden. Doesn't look like much even on long exposure photos.

    Being subscribed with RUclips Premium for years I don't see inserted ads. The question got me curious about your revenue split between ads and Premium viewers?

    Question for next week, did you hear about the space junk that landed in a Kenyan village this week, I believe it was a ring of some description around 8 foot in diameter. Wondered if you had any ideas which rocket it came from or who might own it?

    At 10:09 you can see the Benelux, I live in a very densely populated area, and people from the ISS have said several times that when they fly over us at night, there is a bright spot of light. And it is getting worse and worse, because our cities are growing closer together, with even more stray light as a result. Where I live, even the North Star is invisible, the only thing I can see clearly when the ISS passes, on a clear day. And I can also see the Big Dipper. So I live in a bad area for astronomy. But I am a radio amateur and can paint a picture using a parabolic antenna. Although that gives less romantic images.

    Dear Frasier: since the Apollo missions we have been monitoring the distance of the moon from the earth (it's orbit). Has the rate in which the moon is "running away" so to speak, has the sead of it's departure changed since it's formation? And what is the moons roach limit? How close to the earth could it have been when it was forming?

    If RUclips can start ads even if you disabled then they could as well show mid-roll ads whenever they want.
