I feel like one of the best skills to being a good interior designer is having a STRONG work ethic. Too many times in my program, I would see a new class of truly gifted students coming in and only see half of them coming back the following year. The turn over rate was high because the program was harder than they anticipated once they got past their first year design classes. I never had any natural artistic abilities, so I was the worst at hand sketching in my class. I was a slow space planner and learning the softwares was a HUGE learning curve for me. The hard part wasnt learning all of those things..... it was the amount of work and hours we had to put into our projects in order to succeed. That was my only skill.... I was a hard ass worker and the rest I was able to learn. I was the only one from my class that eneded up graduating. Even now at my job, I work the most insane hours sometimes. Its so important to understand that interior design is so so so much more than decorating a room. Its being an artist and a problem solver at the same time. Its knowing how to switch from designing to production and balancing the two at the same. Its multiple trades combined into one profession and with that comes a lot of responsibility and pressure. I love love love LOVE this profession and truly believe that there is a space for everyone, anyone can learn it... Just mentally prepare yourself for what it brings.
I do miss the most important skill of an interior designer! The most important skill is communication! It is more important than all the other skills you mention in your video. Listen how they live and like to live, listen what their colors are, and make a space their home or office. And without good communication skills you can not explain your ideas and make the client "see" their future environment.
I absolutely agree! It’s actually the most important aspect before the design process even begins, to ensure that the space meets the clients expectations.
Totally what I was thinking; communication. You are basically the therapist of every client. There is a lot of psychology involved in this field and you have to learn a lot of emotional intelligence.
I really liked your way of translating thoughts into words and graphic illustrations. As an architect i also believe that every space we create should have its own mood and story.
I am a ceramic artist career changing to interior design and could not agree more with your first comment re hand sketching as it is currently so useful in my art career and I can see the potential for interior design. In fact all your thoughts are so sensible but not so obvious to the uninitiated!
You’re right, unfortunately we sometimes forget the power of hand sketching since we have been switching to computer generated drawings, but it is still the most effective way to generate the best design ideas. Cheers✨
Oh WOW! I love this video! I have learned so much! I know this is what I want to do - I wanted to become an architect my whole childhood but this year, after some consideration (and experience) I realised maybe it wasn't for me, so I thought of the next best thing: an interior designer! I knowa I have a passion to work with spaces and play around with functionality, design, colour and aesthetics. It always came to me. I'm not sure why, but taking physics in college has actually _helped_ me in building skills to learn what is realistic, what is not. What is functional, what isn't. But youve just earned a new subber!! Tysm 🥰🥰💗💗💗
Wow I love to hear how people discover the interior design career. I hope you enjoy being in the field, in my opinion it’s such an awesome job and there is a lot of reward when transforming spaces. Good luck✨✨✨
Thank you ma , this is actually the second time I'm seeing your video and I'm so engrossed with interior design and I want to really know More about it
I’m a senior this yr and I have thought about interior design as a career for a long time but I don’t know if I’m creative enough so I’m kinda scared:/ I need to apply for uni soon as well
Have you checked my video on creativity? It may help you answer some questions and concerns that most designers have. In a nutshell everything you can learn if you practice well enough, so if interior design is your dream and you commit to it, anyone can succeed. My video is here: ruclips.net/video/vtFpD8hUueg/видео.html
very helpful and informative video. You bring up great points that are very direct and hands on. I helped design a house renovation as a real estate agent and I absolutely love design. I live on Pinterest. The trickiest thing about designing on this project was collaborating with other designers and the general contractor who was also overseeing the whole design. The other hard challenge was designing a tight or small space because you have fewer options and you need to really think about everything that's going to give you the best functionality and usage of the space. A few inches can change a design and also being very detailed so your plumbers or electricians are placing pipes and electric where you need it to come up with the best design outcome.
You are the most fabulous ytber on youtube I've never seen before . I highly appreciate your effortness to spread these knowledge to everyone who involve in interior design such as me . Interior design would be my future career so hope you create more helpful content like this . Huge love :>>
Love the video! Andrea, do you (or anyone else) have suggestions on where to get training on these skills? I’m a late bloomer who left my job in education and want to peruse my passion for design. Without going back to college for a degree, how can I get a more ‘concise’ level of education and experience to get myself started in this field. Any recommendations from you or your RUclips community would be greatly appreciated!
Some people take online courses on design to see if they really like it. In some schools there are also Certificate programs that last for 10-12 months, and they teach you fundamentals of design
hii....have u made a video about how ur journey like how it started and all the steps that u took as a student and the courses u took and the college u went to and stuff like that because i would love to get to know and follow all the steps...
Oh okay I'm still at high school but it's my last year.. in my country the education of interior design in universities is not pretty good.. so people keep telling me that I have to study interior decoration not interior design, but I really love interior design so so much since I was a child.. & I don't know much about interior decoration, what do you think of this?! ++ thanks It was a very useful video
I don’t know where you are from, but in general interior design will give you more job opportunities because most interior designers are also decorators while interior decorators cannot do the job of interior designers, I would advice you to do what you truly love because that is what you will be the best at.
Many parts of this video you said like that a room or bathroom has to be people convenience way.but i have heard its a part of architectural design.so am i have any misconception??i mean to say a interior designer has to work just background design of any places or outside. But i didn’t understand why u said it i have to be good in selection of actually where a room should be
I’ve recently taken interest in interior design BUT I really don’t know the first thing let alone have skill. I was known for great art as a child but as an adult the total opposite! I assumed that if you do a degree, you would learn the skills you need to be a successful interior designer…?
Hi Andrea. Nice video. I'm planning to start a degree in Interior design. Before that can you recommend me some online sources to improve my basic knowledge of interior design? It'd be nice.
Hi, I haven’t personally take any online course so I would be able to recommend from experience but I hear a lot about theinteriordesigninstitute, they offer online courses for interior design in various countries, you could check that out!
Is creativity something that can be developed/grown? Because I like to think I'm creative but I know it's not the greatest, and I want to know if it's possible to grow my creativity into something more.
I would recommend you to follow designers on social media, buy books (great way to learn), read interior design blogs, watch interior design shows, get inspired from magazines (dezeen is a great online resource), invest in learning about the programs designers use (sketchup is my favorite one). Those are some options that will help you gain knowledge in the field. Additionally going to school for interior design is also a great way to learn the theorical side of interior design. Hope that helps✨
Do you pass on the design to an architect to sign off the building compliance? This is the only thing I’m concerned about, I know nothing about building standards, and to be honest that bores me even thinking about it 😢
Hi, that depends on the local building codes of your city. Here in Vancouver, Canada, as of today you need an architect to sign off building permits if the project is greater than 600m2, (typically this applies to commercial projects and larger residential homes) also this varies from province to province, and also other countries may have different regulations. Hope that answers your question. Cheers
That is a great question!! With degree you would learn more things for sure, but having a diploma can still get you a job (at least in countries such as US, Canada, some counties in Europe). Hope that answers your question ✨
Im curious do interior designer can make 3D model of the house? Or they will hire other people to do the 3D house design? I've been confused i want to be doing the 3D design but i don't know if the interior designer do that pls help me im planning to be 3D designer for the house and i don't know what career do that
Yes, I would say most interior designers know how to do 3D modeling, but not all design programs teach you about 3D modeling, it depends on the school. If they don’t teach you, you have to self learn or take additional courses
Hello . I'm an architecture graduate and I want to work with you. Can you please let me know if there are any openings for someone with drafting, photo editing and model making skills? Can you please make a video for job vacancy and for interns who can search on specific website . I am from india , can i apply in your country as intern
Hi, I will try to make one video about jobs soon, I am not sure about the internships but what I have seen here in Canada is that companies typically hire interns who studied in Canada, but you could apply anyways, and submit your portfolio, however you need to get a job permit to be able to work here as a foreigner.

Yes, school will prepare you with technical skills, and knowledge skills. I strongly believe in formal education in the field of design
How do you gain the confidence to sketch in front of a client? I have bad anxiety. 😅❤
By doing it many times, practice is key
