In this video, I take a look at a topic that I am asked about quite often which is using the Line 6 Helix as a midi interface. In this video I show in detail some of the ways that we can utilize the amazing midi functions the Helix is capable while controlling a REVV G20 head via midi. I really hope you enjoy this video and that you find it useful in setting up your Helix as a midi controller.
As always, thanks so much for watching...

Many thanks, Jason. I've been hesitant about using my DAW to control the Helix playing to tracks live, simply because I'd rather just focus more on my vocals and guitar. Even though you didn't necessarily cover that specifically, this helps clear up some of the mystery and I'm less intimidated about it. Your the best out there and we're grateful to have you.

This is such a powerful asset having your helix presets change your amp channels on ANY amp pretty much when using 4 cable method and using the voodoo labs control switcher for example on an amp that doesn't have MIDI capabilities. Absolute game changer for convenience and removing the default amp channel footswitch out of the equation. A must have for those that don't use the amp modeling much and want less toe tapping.

Rumor has it that the HX Stomp will have Control Center when 3.0 firmware is released. Can't wait.
You should do a video on when to use Control Center vs. when to use a separate MIDI controller.

I figured out with midi a way to be able to change up to128 (if need) separate presets on the tonex, using the HX stomp as the controller, with different effects on each of the HX stomps presets, its great. Using a controller to change presets on the stomp and the stomp changing presets on the tonex

7:00 this helped me realize how to get over the problem I'm having. I actually changed the global channel in order to keep my one unit from changing the preset on the other. I only want it to change snapshots etc. maybe I'll change it in the future so that all the program changes match, but not now. thanks!
note: by having the global channel not matching I can still choose the correct channel from each midi cc. as the video points out, you can choose the correct global channel and then you don't have to change it on the patch.

Hi Jason, great video. Have you tried using the Line 6 Helix Controller as a midi controller for plugins such as neural dsp or amplitude5? I've seen videos of people using the line6 FBV3 for this, but just curious to know if it can be done with the helix controller connected straight to the computer via usb..

I recently swapped my board-full of "boutique" 😝 Strymon pedals for a Helix floor unit. Like you, I am a Morningstar Engineering fan and used the MC8 to control my board. I watched your video re using the Morningstar for creating waveforms. Is that all you use it for in the Helix environment? I am trying to determine if it's time to leave my MC8 behind and use the Helix as a midi controller, but I'm reluctant to do so given how phenomenally flexible the MC8 is, especially for controlling the Beat Buddy. Would you mind sharing if, how and when you use your MC8/6 with the Helix, or point me to another resource of yours that addresses this? Thanks! Bill

It IS cool that it is so simple. And that's great for when you just need to change one setting in a device. But analogous to snapshots in Helix, what if you wanted to send a series of midi commands to a device (or more than one device) when you click a button? With snapshots in Helix you can change a large number of settings with one click. I don't think you can send more than one midi command with a click, correct?

  • @RandyKeelingJr

Hey Jason, I know this is an older video but hopefully you can help. Is it possible to make use of the helix floor to control an external looper pedal (e.g. a boss RC-5, 500, 600, etc.) in a way similar to how the internal looper is controlled? What I mean by this might be easiest understood in terms of the existing internal looper. With that looper, you can click a single block and it 'opens' a new window where the switches can control looper functions like start, stop, rev, 1/2 time, etc. Your effects and amps are still there running in the background but if you want to control them you have to exit the looper 'window'.
I would like to be able to do something similar for an external pedal via midi (in my case a RC-500). And there are a LOT of things that can be controlled (memory up/down, rhythm start/stop, all start, all stop... etc.) But I don't want to give up my that many switches on my 'board'. I don't need to see the looper controls all the time, just when I need them. Basically, I would like to be able to pop over to the looper controls, start track 1 or increment a memory location, stop a rhythm pattern, whatever I have to do, and then pop back over to my board... all without interrupting my ability to use the effects and amps on the main board.
To be honest, I'm trying to avoid buying and running an external midi controller (like the MorningStar).
Any ideas or am I being a little vague?
    Thanks

Hi Jason, quick question. On the HX Effects is it possible to change the presets and snapshots with the Voodoo Labs Ground Control Pro? I want to use my GCP in conjunction with the GCX and have the HX Effects presets change with the bank up and down buttons then the 1-4 buttons on the GCP change the snapshots. I have asked in both forums but no one seems to have an answer...any idea?
    Thanks

    • @richardmckenney9434

Afaik you really can’t program it that way but I defer to option If you have not figured it out yet program the HX Effects as a device for the GCP to control, and in your GCP patches you like say patch 2 tell the GCP to send a midis message to the HX Effects to recall preset 5 & when you call up patches 10 or whatever have it have the HX effects recall patch 100.

Great video, Jason. I have the Helix LT and just got the new Boss Rc-500 looper which has midi in/out, as well as a Novation Launchkey 25 with midi out. Is there a specific way you would incorporate these into a Helix LT rig for a versatile multi-track, multi-instrumental (including a mic ) live looping / streaming / recording setup? I've also got 10ch Yamaha MG10XU and 4ch Mackie 402VLZ4 mixers to help patch this together. Also, would you suggest using the Helix LT or the Yamaha mixer as the recording interface to my Mac (Logic and Ableton)? Sorry for all the questions - learning...
