    YIKES!! Great job but way over my head as to how much you you get out of this Helix. It is a amazing tool for sure. Thank you Larry. Hope to drive down to Iowa in 2022 to catch a show. I love Iowa!

      Hey Michael! The HELIX is a real beast of a unit. I'm fairly technical and at first it was a little bit intimidating even for me. Luckily, I've been a LINE 6 guy for quite a few years, so it was just learning all of the new features compared to the POD500HD I had before. I'd just watch a bunch of videos and keep messing around with it and most importantly, have fun! And I would love to have you down to Iowa sometime! If you ever do stop down around Cedar Rapids area please let me know! I love meeting new musician friends!!!

    Hey Larry - great video. Can you expand on the Dashboard light wave file trigger? How did you do that?

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  Год назад

      Oh, that's a tough one that could probably use it's very own video all on it's own, but I'll try to get you pointed in the right direction. So, I use Cubase for my DAW, which I have a "Song" set up with all of my WAVE file triggers. The hardest part is getting your DAW set up to accept midi commands from the Line 6 HELIX. So, I believe at the time I had 3 different recordings (WAVE FILES) that were all set up one after the other, similar to having 3 songs one after the other. I had each of them on their "Own Track" so I could adjust the volume for each of the Wave Files independently. Then I had to create "Markers" for each of the songs/wave files so that I could direct the "start point" for each of the Wave Files. Here's the really hard part, you have to go into the DAW midi settings and create all of the different commands for each of the Songs/Wave Files. (CUBASE has a MIDI matrix that you can go in and set up all of the commands, that was the hardest part... I would assume most other DAW's have a similar feature.) This drove me BAT SHIT CRAZY trying to figure out, BUT once you do the midi information stays within the "Song" and all you need to do is create the new "Marker" for each new Wave File you import. Within Cubase I always created a "STOP" command so that my DAW didn't continue to "PLAY", which if not stopped could continue onto the next "WAVE FILE/SONG". Plus, if you playing to backing tracks, which we had one song that were doing that with, it allows you to stop the backing tracks if you happen to get off beat of the click track. (Click ON or OFF is one of the midi parameters you can set up within your DAW MIDI MATRIX) So, we used to play Paradise By the Dashboard Lights, where I recorded myself doing the vocal play by play baseball thing during the song. When we got to that particular point in the song I had a "SNAPSHOT/CONTROLLER" footswitch set up to activate the Start of the Wave File with "NO Click Track". I also set up a "STOP" command to stop CUBASE at the end so it wouldn't continue to keep playing. (I put about 2 or 3 minutes between each Wave File/Song in case I didn't hit the STOP footswitch fast enough.) Then, we used to have one song with backing tracks where I wanted to the Click Track "ON" so we could keep in time with the backing tracks. Dang, I really should make a video on this in the future! Let me know if this helps in any way? Curious if this made sense at all??? It was probably the hardest midi programming/setup that I've ever done in my life!

    In your upper path at 3:23, why are your last 2 effects bumped down a lane instead of in the top lane? I see this often with people's presets and I'm wondering if I'm missing something important. Thanks for the video!

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  2 года назад

      I'm running what is called the "4 Cable Method", which I'm going to do a video about here in the next month. What that does is allow me to place my effects either "pre or post" Amp/Distortion. I also run a mono signal (my top lane) directly to my Friedman Runt 20 that I can control separately from my (bottom lane), which is my "Stereo Direct Signal" that I send directly to Front of House. (So, if I only want delay/reverb to be routed to my direct signal and NOT to my Friedman amp, I can accomplish that. ) My sound tech runs 3 faders for my guitar mix for Front of House mix. He has a hard left and right true stereo direct signal (amp sims) and then a mono (panned center) mic'd Friedman guitar amp signal that he blends together. For my situation my direct signal adds stereo dimension and my amp source provides the 'sizzle' in the mix and is also the slider that my sound tech uses to boost my leads when needed. So, that's why there's a top and bottom lane for my particular set up. I hope that made sense?

    what and how are you plugging you helix into to control the lighting?

    • @DRKMusicRocks

      I'm running traditional midi din out of my Helix into a Midi Router where it breaks out into USB signal that I then connect to my MacBook by USB 2.0. I currently utilize the Enttec DMXis (it's no longer produced - so I'm going to need to migrate to a new USB DMX interface). That DMXis connects to my MacBook via USB 2.0 as well. I utilize the HELIX midi control and program to change DMX channels on the software on my MacBook. It can be a little overwhelming to set up and program, but once you figure it all out it is a beautiful think. I hope that help???

    Did you ever try to get this working with QLC+? I recently invested in some lights and I also have the Helix and was going to do what you do and control them with the Helix snapshots. I got the lights working with the Enttec Open DMX USB inside QLC+ but for some reason cannot get the Helix to respond to the scene buttons.

    • @bballgod237
      @bballgod237 2 года назад

      I ended up getting this to work. I guess QLC doesn't associate the specific preset/snapshot when you click "auto detect" unless you first assign the MIDI CC# in the Helix Command Center. I also found that I am going to need to use Solo Frames within QLC or else when I flip snapshots the previous lighting scene doesn't turn off. Is this somthing similar that you ran into with DMXIS or is it more intuitive and simpler?

    • @LarrytheMusicGuy
      @LarrytheMusicGuy  2 года назад

      I am unfortunately not familiar with QLC+. Make sure you have the midi channel and bank information set up correctly on the HELIX. If I recall correctly, some of my midi equipment needed to have the "bank info" set to "1" versus "0" setting. Midi sometimes doesn't speak the exact same language. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'd be curious to know if that was the issue.

      @@LarrytheMusicGuy Sorry to keep bothering you for help on here, but I have eventually switched over to a different program called Lightkey as it seems easier to use. I have everything working but the only remaining problem I have is that when flipping back and forth between snapshots it does not turn off the previous lighting preset/cue. So if I have snapshot 1 turn on All Blue and snapshot 2 turn on All Red, if I hit 1 and then 2 both All Red and All Blue are on...then if I go back to snapshot 1 it turns All Blue off and leaves All Red on until I hit snapshot 2 again. Did you have to configure your snapshots a certain way or mess with any special action settings for the MIDI controller within DMXIS?

      @@bballgod237 hmmm…that’s weird how it’s layering lighting scenes on top of each other. I’ve got to work on some midi related programming myself here this weekend, so I’ll look around the menus to see if I can find where there might be a parameter to change that might help resolve your issue. Question for you, are you sending out midi information on a specific midi channel, or sending as a “base” midi command. If not via specific midi channel, that might be your issue. Also, since I’m running multiple midi equipment signals, I have ran into some midi crosstalk issues. I ended up buying an iConnectivity Mio 4 Midi Router so I could mask channels and resolve those cross talk issues. That may be something you may need to look into if running multiple midi channel commands. Let me know about how your midi channel configuration is running and I’ll see if I can help you out.

      @@LarrytheMusicGuy You know what I actually ended up finally figuring it out! In both QLC+ and Lightkey everything works now. I even have it sync'ed up to the BPM beat clock too. Part of my issue was you have to have the cue buttons within a "frame" so it only chooses one scene at a time. Seems like it might be easier with DMXIS that you can assign a scene itself as a MIDI command instead of a live cue button. Thanks again for all your help, seriously I never would've been able to figure this out without your videos and you chiming in on my comments!
