    Nvidia's first Shield device was a good showcase of the Tegra 4 processor, but was limited as a dedicated gaming device. We test the new Shield Tablet and wireless controller, and show off its gaming and productivity features. We also evaluate the stylus, Nvidia's new Grid Beta, and Shield's built-in Twitch streaming capabilities. This ends up being one of the better Android tablets we've tested.

      J.W van Wijngaarden yeah, Norm knows a bit about photo and Will knows a bit about.....I don't really know, actually. But that's about it and the rest is just parroting what they have read and what they are seeing.

    • @esaedvik
      @esaedvik 10 лет назад +4

      J.W van Wijngaarden How does this come to light? I don't see anything wrong with their facts and I'm very versed in mobile tech, photography and gaming, which are on the table here.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 10 лет назад +6

      Esa Edvik Actually, there's a lot of things wrong with what they say here. I'm not going to dissect the entire video, but here's some that's certainly 'wrong'. The stylus with rubber tip good for painting? Heck no! For that you need accuracy of a single point, like a ballpoint. Other tablets have superior solutions there. The stylus here is obviously meant for note taking. As for the Shield itself and it's specs, it's super obvious Will takes advantage of every opportunity to compare this to Apple's iPad only to talk it down. Will is never really interested in Android devices. He mindlessly claims no other Android tablets have had speakers on the front, when in reality hundreds of tablets have speakers on the front, some even on both sides to provide for a superior audio experience when watching videos in landscape mode. This is not something 'a few cheap tablets did' Norm. I also think Norm should have been a bit more critical about the viewing angles, because honestly for a tablet this small that's supposed to support up to 4 players on a couch it's quite horrible. Aside from that, the 'power saving' stuff throttling down the processor and cores is a useless feature. The cost of performance is too large. Brings me to the next thing, 30 fps is NOT a good frame rate. From 60 fps and up you'll get smooth gameplay. I do get that the streaming is probably limited to 24fps or 30fps, but they should have complaint about that as well. With Steam streaming, the 30 fps streaming when a game runs far over 30 fps results in a rather choppy experience that's anything but smooth. The Shield here is no different as it's capped to 30fps streaming as well. I personally like a power button that's deeper, so you don't accidentally turn it on in a bag. Finally the Surface Pro 3 is perfectly capable without the keyboard accessory. Yes, for typing, you'll want the keyboard, but it's not necessary that much unless you insist on using it as a pure laptop. Then of course it needs the keyboard cover. But in such a case it's well worth the money (or in fact a purchase of a different Wifi keyboard and mouse for LESS money).

    • @esaedvik
      @esaedvik 10 лет назад

      PHeMoX You're mostly nitpicking about opinions.
      There's no way they've tested EVERY Android tablet to know of any of them have front-facing speakers, and who even remembers stuff like that from 5000 different tablets?
      The stylys is fine for sketching, but yes, it's no Galaxy Note.
      Using Windows 8 without a keyboard is effin awful. The OSK is so horrible, I can't even describe. It's not even content aware, you have to manually open it almost every time you need to type something. I don't see Surface being any different with that than a Dell Venue 11 Pro I've got.
      30 FPS is fine for _most_ people. I don't get 30 FPS in most old games even on my desktop, let alone any new one.
      Will is there to ask the "hard-hitting" questions, hence deliberately "judgemental", he's not being a dick. He's contributing to the video, otherwise it'd be a presentation. iPads are popular, hence the comparisons.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX 10 лет назад +1

      Esa Edvik True, but isn't the point of a review to give a useful opinion next to a more objective overview of features and specs? There's a lot of stuff they say out of pure bias and assumption and that really has very little to do with them having reviewed other Android devices. And I do remember stuff from other tablets and I don't think I've seen 5000. More something like 250.
      Far too often I happen to disagree with their views on products. That in itself is fine, I take whatever value there is in their video and am satisfied. But Will being judgemental is not faked, nor deliberate. It's his personality and it shows in EVERYTHING he does on the show. But my comment wasn't about just Will and I really do understand the idea of asking Norm questions. If you pay close attention to my previous comment, you'll see I actually would have liked them to be a bit more critical about a few key points. Instead, Will asks questions that lack a real ground. It's like buckshot, all over the place, but never really hitting anything substantial. The constant need to compare this to the iPad makes very little sense. Yes, it's popular and yes it's good. But this device obviously is meant for entirely different purposes. The iPad can't do streaming, has no capacitive stylus and honestly is very much not a device capable of serious productivity. And nope it doesn't have a keyboard included either. Honestly, I don't really understand his everlasting need to compare whatever Android to iPads or iPhones. It makes no sense.
      And no, 30 fps is really not good enough. If you do not get 60 fps on your setup, then with all due respect you most likely do not really know what you're missing out on. The fluidity of 60 fps is superior in so many ways, it's not even debatable. I also disagree with your statement that Windows 8 is awful without a keyboard, because most of the interface stuff is gesture and touch based. Yes, anything that requires extensive typing will eventually make you want a keyboard. I'm not disagreeing there. But stating the keyboard cover is a necessity for general purpose use of the Surface Pro 3 tablet really is simply untrue. It can very much be just a tablet as well.

    To get the best game streaming out of either Shield (I own and LOVE my portable) you need the following:
    1) A GTX 650 or higher (MUST be GTX) on your host PC.
    2) The host PC "should" be hardwired to the 5ghz router for best results.
    If your host PC is using a little USB wifi dongle to connect to the router, you're going to have a bad time.
    The Shield should be the only of the 2 on wifi. Host PC = Hardwired. Shield = Wifi.
    The better your ISP...the...well....better.
    Don't pay 30 bucks a month for 20mbps down, 10mbps up, then use a crappy Comcast router and wifi dongles then complain your game streaming sucks.

    I have this tablet without a controller and I'm loving it. It's a great casual game, video, and eBook consuming device. I even tried using the stylus in Calculus class today to take notes in Evernote, and it was at least half decent. The palm rejection sometimes doesn't work and you have to lift the stylus higher than you would with a pencil on paper, but other than those quirks and my bad hand writing, I found the stylus to be useful. I'll love it even more once I get the controller.

    The main reason I would get this device is for emulation. There is an emulator for just about every game system. I can imagine hooking the shield tablet to my 50 inch ultra hd tv and playing mario kart 64 with 4 of my friends simultaneously with wireless controllers. Ps1, psp, super Nintendo, sega dreamcast, gameboy, its a retro game dream. But why the nvidia shield tablet? Because its got the new k1 processor and the convenience of console mode. I'm not so much for the streaming tho. I just hope nvidia keeps this thing updated.

  • @FirstLast-pm8bw

    Dear NVIDIA, please bring us a SHIELD PHONE with a 7 inch screen and minimal bezels. The world is waiting for the first phone to fully replace a PC. With the exception of gaming on ultra settings, we are already there with tablets. The SHIELD TABLET is one of of those tablets. But what makes this tablet one of a kind is the small size. The SHIELD TABLET is not far from a size that could used as a phone, but is just a little bit to big (especially since it has "tablet bezels"). To just make it a little bit smaller and ad phone functions, would be a huge milestone. It would make it the first PHONE that people confidently could replace a PC with!
    And if the ambition is to make a replacement for PCs. You might also want to consider completing it with a PC standard set of ports. For example a full sized hdmi port, full sized USB port (beyond the standard micro USB) and maybe even be so groundbreaking (probably overkill) as to ad an ethernet port.
    Also, I wish that you would update the SHIELD Controller by making it smaller, change the android buttons on it to look like Android 5.0 Lollipop interface buttons (triangle, circle and square), give the option of bluetooth connectivity and givit it the abiliy to hold the SHIELD device, in which ever preposition that may be (on, in, over?).
    I know you can do it NVIDIA, because you were so close with the SHIELD TABLET!
    If anyone who reads this agree, please give me a thumbs up and maybe even leave a comment about what you think NVIDIA could or should do with this concept!

    I'm sure you guys know this now, but anyways there is PC support available for the SHIELD controller through GeForce Experience. I'm still debating with myself whether the SHIELD controller is worth purchasing over a third party controller such as an Xbox 360 controller even though I own a SHIELD tablet. In the end I might just save $40 and buy an Xbox 360 controller, which is compatible with most tablets and PCs.

    Hey, guys, you said that the controller doesn't work with a PC but the FAQ's at the NVidia site clearly state that it will work with a PC using a USB cable: IS THE SHIELD CONTROLLER COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS?
    The SHIELD controller can be used as a wired game controller with Windows® 8 or Windows 7 PCs using the USB cable provided in the box.
    CAN THE SHIELD CONTROLLER WORK WIRELESSLY WITH WINDOWS?
    No. The SHIELD controller can only be used as a wired game controller with Windows® 8 or Windows 7 PCs.
    HOW DO I ENABLE PC SUPPORT? WHAT SOFTWARE OR DRIVERS ARE NEEDED?
    Windows drivers for the SHIELD controller are provided by GeForce Experience.

    ok The Nvidia Shield is just what us gamers needed i have compared it to the razer Tablet and only difference is that razer uses 8 gb ram and up to a 256gb ssd but otherwise the shield puts it to shame in CPU/GPU department and for anyone who thinks anything WINBLOWS Based is superior needs to recheck their info as Android Uses Linux and has been proven time and time again that Linux Based systems are far more superior then Winblows Systems, If Linux came out with a DirectX API Clone to where you can install any windows game (without emulation) to your linux system see how many people ditch windows at that point so from a Gamer/UNIX Users point of view the Nvidia Shield is a Blessing.

    • @DocHollidayGames

      You're right, it is wifi direct. I was assuming it to be bluetooth. Does there exist a universal wifi direct dongle for PCs, or is it usually a proprietary encrypted connection?

      Their in-depth reviews are one of the reasons I like Tested so much, most other publications don't nearly go in-depth enough for my taste. At the end of a Tested review I leave confident that I actually know everything about a product, which is never the case if I'm watching reviews from anyone else.

    I think a lot of people are going to have problems with game streaming technologies. Most people roll up to walmart or bestbuy and purchase the cheapest ass router possible because it "works." Routers are just like everything else, there are good ones and bad ones. I was not able to get above 7-8 mbps (out of ~55mbps total bandwidth in my area) on my circa 2007 wireless router. The old router only processed at about 400mhz... updated to a ~$200 quad core ASUS router with all the new wireless standards and I started realizing the max. bandwidth my connection had to offer. Another problem is the internal wiring on some homes. Crusty old unshielded coax in the house I am renting had me limited at ~22-25 mbps. Had to change that to shielded RG6 from outside all the way to my router to get full bandwidth.

      +Reasonably Reasonable Videos (I own a Shield Tablet) The Tablet comes preloaded with Portal 1 and Half-Life 2 (and ep.1). Remember these are console ports, so no mouse and keyboard controls, only a controller. you can use a wired xbox controller however, if you like that but the NVidia controller is pretty good.

      +Daniel Heeris hey im really wanna buy this and really close to it - but can u literally play all your games on stream? And can you for example go to your friends place, keep ur own pc turned on and connected and stream through there or isnt that possible?

    • @DanielHeeris
      @DanielHeeris 8 лет назад

      Mikael Larsson Yes and yes. If we disregard the Geforce Now service and just look at streaming from your home gaming PC to the tablet, you can do that over local network and over the internet. Becaue you are signed into the Geforce Experience software on the PC, and because you are signed in on the tablets NVidia Hub (the app that facilitates the streaming), you don't need to redirect ports or anything in your router. You just need to connect directly over local network once, basically paring the PC and the tablet, and then it works over the internet as well from then on. I tried it last week at a friends place and it worked impresivly well despite some latency warnings. Keep in mind it takes a very good connection on both ends. For best bandwidth in case your friend does not have dualband wifi, I carry a USB-OTG cable with me so I can hook the tablet up to ethernet vith a USB to Ethernet adapter. Both USB-OTG and ethernet is nativly support in Android.
      Happy holidays, God Jul :)

      Sean Overall i see... well i hope it gets announced soon.
      i own nexus 7 2012, didn't get the 2013 version, cuz i didn't see much of a point (even now the 2012 is kind of great), but i would consider taking the newer one.
      and with the rumors i have heard, it could be something really nice.
      i heard htc is making it, and it will have the k1 processor, but 64bit version.
      i really hope for front facing speakers, and if HTC is making it, it is a bit more likely to be that way.
