Love frog legs. Used to gig them as a kid in big local ponds, along with catching snapping turtles to eat. I'm glad you made that video, because most of us out here in the country don't know about removing that white nerve. I remember as a kid the first time we talked mom into fixing a mess of frog legs we just rolled them in flour like you would chicken with salt and pepper and she's frying away in the kitchen and we heard her scream. I went and said what's going on she said that damn thing jumped 2 ft out of the pan, up even my eyeballs. I just laughed and said yeah right because at the time we didn't know they do that. Went back in the living room, not 2 minutes later she screamed again and said get in here. She was holding the lid on the skillet and you can hear them trying to bounce against the lid. She said I'm not frying these damn things you are... And that day I became a cook. LOL. Seriously I remember one time I was at Kroger's and saw a package of frog legs that was 2 lb and it cost $44 and this was many years ago like 15 or 20. Those things are going for $22 a pound back then. Yes they kind of tastes like chicken but there are a whole lot better. I would think if you could put a little bit of Tabasco sauce or Frank's Red Hot on them, they would be really good grilled as well. We ran out of ideas to do shrimp one time and just put Tabasco sauce on them about three or four drops and they came out great. Love you buddy thanks for the videos and hello from East Tennessee, Sevierville, out near Smoky Mountain knife works.
Now, I’m a city girl, but I went to college in Alabama and had the opportunity to try frog legs. The idea of eating them..took a min to get over what I was about to try lol Man o man…that was some good eating lol 😂 I went back for seconds lol 😂 I half expected you to make some gravy in that skillet like you did with that squirrel in Journal of the Yurt series. One of my FAVORITE series! I’ve watched your videos for YEARS and I love all that I’ve learned over the years. Can’t wait to go frog hunting and cooking up some fresh frog legs lol Thank you for your many years of content. 🙏🏾
Howdy, Brother! This is the first time I've ever hear about removing those nerves. Big "D" is forever teach'n and preach'n! As always, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Drive-on, Cowboy!! 🤠
One thing is for sure if someone is to watch your video they will learn I have learned something on every video I've ever watched thank you for passing on the knowledge
I like mine sauteed in clarified garlic butter served with lemon wedges and hushpuppies. A cloth or some paper towels works good for skinning. In Tennessee a small game hunting license is required. You're making my mouth water!
Hey Dave! Yet another great video. I found your channel on about video 5 and have been watching ever since because you have a way of teaching that is both educational and fun. I grew up in southern WV where I was always outside running around the woods, hunting, fishing, camping, etc, spent 20 years in the Army, and still manage to learn things from you. Keep up the great work.
Another Great video Dave!! I grew up on fried frog legs and Momma cooking them every Saturday night! My Pop and Uncles went out every Friday night and caught coolers full of them here in Florida, back in the 60s and 70s! I am anxious to see your review on that water jug unit!
If I’m not mistaken Dave did a video many years ago on frog gigging. Where he shows how to make a gig from a sapling. And a pole for a gig and attached the gig with bank line
It's nice to see your video, I haven't done frogs in a long time, but we also use the front legs and the backs. There's not much meat but it's good meat
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventures through the woods forgive me sometimes the jokes are funnier when they stay in my head but I can't eat frog legs ... because they make me jumpy
Really miss the cooking videos, Dave! They're some of my favorites. I would love to see more videos about wild edibles and maybe a refresh of your amazing series on Trees and their uses.
Hi my brother Dave Canterbury!! Another outstanding video my wife and I appreciate everything you, your family and friends do for us. We love doing business with you and self-reliance outfitters, however, we sure hope you’re getting your cooking tips from Matt!!, Black Hat Bushcraft!!🤣😂. Sending a little humor your way brother!!👍🏿💯❤️😂
There I was. Just sitting in the cool water waiting for a nice juicy bug to go by when all of a sudden there was a bright light in my eyes. I thought maybe it was the Second Coming. Then BAM! There was a sharp pain like I have never felt before, then, no more bright light. Having never cooked frog legs before the knowledge about the nerves is handy insight. I like the idea about the Cheez-its as breading.
Not had gator or frog legs yet, but I'm still here. Just saying the word squirrel makes my mouth water. Thanks for the tutorial Dave. Always good information.
At 7:30 in the video, you reminded me of what I often did as a grade school kid: I would crush my bag of Fritos corn chips before consuming them! 😁😆 While I've never eaten frog legs, I have to think that the pulverized corn chips would also make a fine "breading" mixture. Perhaps I will yet get an opportunity to test my hypothesis before the Grim Reaper arrives to cancel all options. We do have a few lakes in far western Washington State that support Bullfrog populations.
For the "hard to find" Power button on the Sandy Cats battery, you could put a white dot on it with some of Iris' nail polish. Get you visual and textural cues to make life a little easier.
Also check the regs regarding gigs. My state, (Indiana) doesn't let you use those big "fish gigs". Gigs can't be more than 3" wide with a single row of tines.
I am Florida born, and never did the prep that you did, but I will take more care in my prep for sure. I can't afford your gear, but what I do have is sufficient for me. I wish I could afford to take your classes.
When I was a kid in early 60’s, we had a guy that lived across the street, whom we called, Uncle Ricky. He was a body builder before it was a huge sport and spend a lot of time in Honey Island Swamp.( thinking back- I now believe he was a Nam Vet). Any way, he would show us kids different creatures from the swamp. He once, brought back a medium sized gator and wrestled it out in the yard. The point; he brought back a bull frog once that was easily 10 to 12 inches long in the sitting position. When stretched out the legs, it doubled in size and the legs were comparable to a chicken leg. Actually, that wasn’t the only frog. Where have all the large frogs gone!? I don’t go in that swamp anymore. I was almost shot twice by idiots that shoot at anything that moves. Appreciate Dave. How’s it going with the new skillet?
Now I'm hungry!! LOL I miss having fresh from the pond frogs!! One of those things I miss having lost the ability to do. Muscular Dystrophy doesn't let me go as much as I used to!! But, I am still going!!
You really do even carry the kitchen sink in that rig, lol. Nice setup sir. Nothing like watching hillbilly version of julia childs, now i really need to go froggin. Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I used to enjoy frog gigging but nowadays the alligators have gotten too numerous and aggressive and still have the moccasins to contend with . Though the really big bullfrogs are fun .
Also me and my cousin used to sit in the opposite side pond and wait for frogs to jump out on the other during the day and pop em with a BB gun. We would get about 10 legs a piece then come home and cook em . Good times and delicious eats.
I have the same scorpion tattoo on my left hand , it's 30 years old . I have met 1 other while driving a taxi . Crazy coincidence . Always enjoy your videos
🎉😂 this is Kewel as a kid growing up in the 70's in Northern Massachusetts i usta go Frogging all the time. We'd catch-em live put a colored Bread tie on their front leg so we Kno how many times we cought it, 1st time White, 2nd blue, 3rd yellow & 4th Red. Depending on the Size it was 1 leg for Sm. to med. Both LG. Bullfrogs, we'd tie a stick to the legs 🦵 with some wire dip em in some water then Salt & put in open Fire 🔥 cook & eat. Mostly during the day, Night time if we were River Camping. As for gear a Modified cubscout pack Needle nose pliers, knife, assorted condiments ( Salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, ) fishing line, 3'-4' long Y-branch, for Bullfrogs a knotted stick like a Lilac branch wicked well to stun them . Worked well on Snakes too. I learn something New everyday, tks for Sharing Sir. Now @ 55 looking back my Childhood was Awesome! Hav a Gr8 Day Mr. Canterbury 😊
Damn dude fresh hair cut and beard trimmed. Dave, you look cleaner than the Board of Health!! LOL. Reallly digging this gigging video Dave. ATB. Mike from Chicago!!
Thanks for another video Brother Dave. My grandfather loved gigging frogs and he always kept the backs of the big ones for extra meat, to have with the legs. Thanks for the tip regarding the removal of the nerve. Some folks can’t stand them jumping around in the pan. /G\
Good to know. The frogs have all but disappeared from my river😢. Near Memphis I met a man that speared big catfish from the bank. Those big fish cruise the surface along the bank about sundown. His fish spear pole was 20’ long.
I caught more frogs by dangling a 2 inch mister twister with a 1/16 oz jig head in front of their faces at night with my fishing pole than I did with a frog gig. Being a lazy kid helped too. Lol
I used to go with my daddy all the time when I was kid frog gigging. I remember it well don’t remember seeing very many snakes when I was kid he said take frog again when I was about 16 I think I got about 25 yards close to to Lake. And I saw about five or six snakes on the way there. I finally told him daddy. I love you but there’s too many snakes out here. I’ll be waiting in the car.

That was pretty neat. Thanks for showing how to clean the frog and also for the top about the nerves. Great job of showing how it's done!
You've got the life Dave I'm so envious of you
Looks great Dave 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You sure did enjoy that meal! I bought the Woodsman cook set a month ago and can't wait to use it in the field. Love my SRO gear!

As kids we'd use the rest of the frog parts as fishing bait, especially its peepers were great bait. Get you some surf and turf. lol

Great video!! In Florida we get lots of good size frogs to cook up. Can you describe the water hose setup to the water can?
Dave, have you used a slingshot band in a frog gig? It works great.
Now I'm hungry!! LOL I miss having fresh from the pond frogs!! One of those things I miss having lost the ability to do. Muscular Dystrophy doesn't let me go as much as I used to!! But, I am still going!!

Cool.
Lost my mom recently (cancer), doing anything I can to hold an interest in life.
You have got to make a video on that portable water pump/ wash station! That’s a great mobile idea 💡
Man Dave, how can you stop at just 2 legs? I could eat a bucket load of frog legs! The backs have quite a bit of meat on them too!
The front legs and belly meat is also good on the bigger frogs 😊 love your content
I used to enjoy frog gigging but nowadays the alligators have gotten too numerous and aggressive and still have the moccasins to contend with . Though the really big bullfrogs are fun .
Dave your the shit brother, you absolutely have life figured out. The pathfinder way is the only way imo

Why is it that the upper torso of the frog is not usable?
Lack of meat
