This is the perhaps the pinnacle of knowledge from Dave about lightweight hammock camping. I have looked seriously at experimenting with hammock camping but I never arrive. The simplicity of rolling out a pre-stuffed bivy on a groundmat is just too convenient. If there are bugs I get in the bivy and pull a hat-shaped bug net over my head. If there is constant heavy rain I can rig a small tarp into a plough and put my head and gear under it. If it continues to rain I go home... Even 2 -3 nights on the ground with a bivy I can change my location in 2 mins. I suppose I am lazy, finding a nice site and rolling out a bivy gives me more time to enjoy nature.....perhaps I would think different if I was in the jungle, but in Sherwood Forest these days you can't even find a rabbit to crawl over your bivy
Brother, can you help out all us broke down Veterans with war disabilities by providing training for us and our physical limitations? You’ve always been an innovator so if anyone can help us, it’s you.
Excellent series - i have made changes in my kit, and practiced utilizing in the last "cold" rain thunderstorm we (MI) will probably have for awhile with warm weather blowing up, now to get ready for the HEAT, bugs, and humidity to take over - the "pre-bug" time is my favorite camping season -
I like the long videos, no apology needed haha. I spent about 6 hours in the woods today myself, getting ready to do a few day adventure similar to this maybe in the next few weeks
This is all a great idea. What I have done, largely following this video, was to sort of make a hybrid of this. Considering that I pack the majority of what is here, this is what I chose for a shelter option, for either hanging OR ground: I have a Dutchware Chameleon, with the bug net. Instead of an underquilt, I actually bought a Klymit inflatable hammock pad, made specifically for hammocks. This gives me the option of EITHER hanging from the hammock, OR going to ground. I carry a tyvek sheet at all times-which is used as a ground sheet for the pad if going to ground, or to step on under the hammock, as needed. As for the tarp, I have a Warbonnet mini fly, which, in truth, I have not yet tried out, but recently bought, and can be used in either situation. This way, its the best of both worlds.
Hammock for me 90% of the time. I’ve often thought about taking the bed out of my travel trailer and just hanging a hammock. I sleep great but the girlfriend hates sleeping on the floor with the dog. So thats a big NO.😂. In all truth the hammock is my first choice every time. Thanks Dave
Very nice setup Dave. I have a Onewind setup an a Alder stream canvas pack . Custom made by a women In Maine she is truly a master pack maker. Thanks for the great video Dave. Makes me want to get out an do some exploring.
Dave this was outstanding! I love the fact that you put your gear through its paces before you release it on your site, it shows that you care about your products and the quality of them! Great content my friend as always, so many ideas for me to play around with!!!
I love the hammock with net and tarp setup, it's so light and makes all the issues with the ground go away, don't care anymore if it's wet, rocky, cold, etc. Hanging the down insulator under the hammock is genius, I was using a heavy synthetic bag in the hammock cus mats didn't fit well but I can't wait to try this.
Excellent video, Dave. Ive been testing and tweaking gear for decades. I thought I had it sussed but this video has me questioning my hammock and tarp suspension systems. Back to the drawing board! I love the idea of Dyneema but it is nigh on impossible to get here in the UK. I look forward to it becoming as readily available as it is in the US.
Great video as usual Dave! I've been camping with the poles through a couple of 6mill bags that I've used for 4 years resting on tripods. Love it , very comfy . But at 64 yrs. Old, thinking about switching to a hammock system.
So odd thing to throw out i know but instead of a toggle or hook for hanging my bag for convenience, i carry at least one SOFT-W tourniquet on my left shoulder strap of my bag, pretty much ever bag. I use that on a tree or pole, not twisted tight just snug hooked in and it works great for me so far.
A very interesting look at a hammock/hiking loadout. Talking about waiting for gear: I'm eagerly waiting for your store to release the uneven/swivel tent pole sets you previewed in your heat management video! I hope it works with a decent-sized tarp rather than relying on a poncho.
Love this series dave. Really looking forward to any fishing videos you put out. You should do a shore lunch episode! Maybe a another "Sunfish lunchen"
Thank you for all the helpful information. It’s always helped. I’m sorry if I’m posting this to the wrong place. I’m 55 and have been interested in the woods and bush-crafting for about two years. I do follow several people, and most agree, you are one of if not the best. I have used your RUclips videos to get me started and teach new lessons. But nothing beats dirt time. One issue I seem to have is keeping things cold in the summer and warmer months when I’m out in the woods for a couple days. Would it be possible to get some advice on how you would do it please? Even if it’s a video. lol. Thank you for any help. I am working on my skills and fitness so I may take your classes. I would like to patch all of them.
All good stuff Big Dawg. I just added a Dutchware Anaconda to my hang. Now I can pack my under and top quilt with my Chameleon hammock in one stuff sack. I'm likin' it. +1 on the Helikon-Tex Swagman, that piece of gear is so versatile.
Wanted to let you know I found several Pathfinder products at Vance Outdoors shop the other day. First time I've ever seen them sold in a store. Rather cool!
WarBonnet Outdoors has straps with buckles for around $23 that will be way lighter than those double layer straps, and they slide to adjust. Been using mine for years and they've held up really well. Spliced a ducthware titanium hook onto the endless loops and they hook right onto the hammock.
Dave just want to add a little trick I found for the zipper of your hammock put a string on the inside zipper pins and I find it easier to close the zipper while laying in it
Wow...Listening to some "experts" on RUclips today, you'd think that using a hammock was such a time consuming back breaking hassle. Well, maybe is is hard for "them". You make it look like a piece of cake Dave.
Your pillow setup is the same idea and reason ill probably never retire my Marmot jacket. Sadly, they dont make it anymore, but it packs into its inside pocket to make a perfect pillow (for me).
nice vid. i found the befree filter works better on the 2L bag with no leaks. the cnoc bag i have did not seal well for me. also, i carried my FIRST 2L dirty bag in my shovel pocket , but somehow i poked a hole in it. now i carry it inside my pack or in a stuff sack.
Excellent video and excellent equipment that is light and practical... If you Mr. Dave could do something like "back to basic" Nessmuk style as you did before with classic equipment and of course with your famous belt pouch... You are a guru for us and thank you for your work and education... I have many of your products and I am very satisfied but I can't find the Pathfinder backpack anywhere in Europe do you have a plan to sell on this side of the ocean? A big greeting to you and all your followers... Greetings from Sweden
May I humbly suggest some Father Nomad glowing lanterns for zipper pulls. A welcome addition for when you gotta pee at night and the bugnet has other ideas.
I remember my Strupel-wafel kick a few years ago. They got some great versions out of Switzerland and Germany. I'm fortunate not to have gotten fat from my stroop-waffle addiction.
There will be a reboot version on CC’s channel next week in case you missed this one. 😂😂. He’s such a joke. Dave your pack and meals are great along with many other products. Thanks for offering knowledge. 👍🏻

Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! I don't comment very often, I have been enjoying this series. Thanks for all You Do! God Bless!

Been watching you since I was a kid Mr. Canterbury! Thank you so much for the knowledge you have spread!

Cool video. I have a Zoleo sat comm as backup for inreach.
Awesome video my friend
Great idea with the toggle threaded onto your pack hanger/utility cord. Delrin I assume? What dimensions?
Thanks Dave
Enjoyed the video , THANKS
In regards to the GPS tracker: practice using it in a safe or controlled place before using it in the bush!
Dave, Ty for the video…
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the FHF Gear Rifle sling with pack attachment system.
Excellent video and excellent equipment that is light and practical... I need to order the hammock and tarp looks pretty comfy lol
Some more night camping shots would have been cool. Great video
I need that pillow. Where did it come from?
May I humbly suggest some Father Nomad glowing lanterns for zipper pulls. A welcome addition for when you gotta pee at night and the bugnet has other ideas.
Need to see Dave do a section hike on the AT
so was there a part 3 as suggested? can't locate the vid if so.
Thanks for the video, should of used the pathfinder hammock ;)
For that tarp, is that 2 lines on the end of the tarp or one line that runs right through? How do you create that tensioner?
Just wondering why ur phasing out ur titanium lineup or have u mentioned that yet and I missed it. Thanx in advance!
No fire?
Or just got by with the stove?
Man I love series, Just wish you would do one using only PF gear. oh well.
Hey Dave, what are those little black bags that you have everything stored away in? Example: The food bag. Thanks!
Dyneema we sell them on our site
I remember my Strupel-wafel kick a few years ago. They got some great versions out of Switzerland and Germany. I'm fortunate not to have gotten fat from my stroop-waffle addiction.
What is the name of the hammock?
I enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Great video Dave! What's a buff?
Great content thanks !
You use to write the weights on the bags? A Paint pen?
What is that green dry bag you have all the sleep gear in?
What is a buff? you mentioned having a couple of buffs, or bucks, in your spare clothes kit. I have no idea what that is.
What material is the toggle made out of?
There will be a reboot version on CC’s channel next week in case you missed this one. 😂😂. He’s such a joke. Dave your pack and meals are great along with many other products. Thanks for offering knowledge. 👍🏻
Great video!...
Lol.. the ubiquitous junk drawer 😂
If you don't have a junk drawer, you're probably not a human.
Can ypu repack everything in the rain too?
Are these products you can link? Those overquilts look amazing
