If our modern world collapses, which it will if the powers that be get their way, you sir have provided a wealth of knowledge over the years to empower humans for survival. Bloody good effort mate, God bless you and your family.
👍👍👍 So nice to see this movement back towards 'traditional' gear'. Yes, it's not conducive to long distance hiking and the ulta-light backpacking fraternity will react in horror at the thought of lugging such gear with them. That said, the 'old stuff', with the requisite TLC, can almost last one forever. I have a canvas A-Frame 'Pup Tent bought back in the early 70's that is still perfectly useable. Yes, with galvanised steel support and ridge poles, not a distance backpacking tent, but it has been humped some distance from the vehicle to the selected camp sites and, treatment with 'Nu Proof Canvas Dressing' when required, has kept the cloth waterproof and rot-free. It's had plenty use .. me and then later the kids .. especially my daughter who, even from a young age, loved 'garden camp' sleepovers, accompanied by a Pit Bull and Jack Russell (that and close proximity to our bedroom window, 'security' well taken care of 😁). It now resides in a bedroom cupboard top shelf waiting for the next generation to come along. Also, supporting one's specifically local manufacturers (NOT to be confused with importers / re-branders / distributors) is, wherever possible, is a noble cause. Often, locals cannot compete price-wise with Eastern 'Sweatshops' and mass-production but hey, they also have to put food on the table. To steal from the Movie 'Field of Dreams' .. 'Produce a good quality, reasonsbly-priced product with good delivery and after sales service' .. and .. "they will come" 😊. A good share and am looking forward to more. Until then, take care ..
Had my Aussie made Driza bone coat for over 30 years. A little bit tighter fitting than it was back then but still in great nick for the treatment it use to get. Getting old and soft and avoid camping in winding cold raining weather these days.
The watchcoat looks interesting. For an tarp id rather just have an 8x8 or 9x9 instead of mating thing together and ill take a dedicated sleeping bag or quilt. The only issue with this oilcloth is weight. I live out west in an mountain valley and like the trad gear but hauling it up terrain and eleveation changes is a tough duty.
That overcoat looks like it'd be nice just around the homestead. I'd have to put on a few buttons so there was no need for a sash, but other than that.... It'd be nice to have something that's plenty roomy, able to slip on over a coat and not feel jammed up.
@Dave Canterbury, I absolutely 💯 love oil cloth! I can't wait to see the foresters quilt! I need an under quilt and over quilt! And that oilskin I believe is 💯 the way to go! Long lasting, durable, multipurpose! That's definitely a win!
I can see using the shotgun sleeve as the "mitten" for your shooting hand. The support hand has a mitt on it and your shooting hand has a liner glove on at the ready under the oilcloth sleeve.
I need me some tentsmith gear. I love the bedroll idea. I live in the rainforest of SE Alaska. It’s not too wet really, my area only averages 10 feet (that’s not a typo) of rain a year. It’s hard to keep your sleep system dry when sleeping under a tarp. I usually resort to an emergency blanket, but that’s loud and disruptive. I’ve got some good pondering to do. Thanks for the idea and video!
all right you finally got me . with the poncho and liner i can give up the military ponchos which are getting harder and more expensive to find. if i can afford it im in.
I got a hole in my 9x9 the first year I had it and was devastated. Luckily it hasn’t gotten any more holes and the original sewed up really good and has held for a couple years now. Super sturdy and reliable shelter! And now I want a 6x8 😂
I definitely need to trade my lightweight nylon tarp for quality oilcloth. After a couple of nights of wind-flapping and clammy ceilings/walls, I’m thinking the extra weight and packing bulk would be worth it. Way more adaptable as well. A nylon taffeta bedroll would be pretty awful. Great info as always.
Dude, I have to ask you a question. Now, I know you are a bushcraft guy and a survival guy, but if you were a glamping guy, what would that look like stuffed into the back of an suv? Like, glamping combined with bushcraft and survival, lol! I bet you would have some interesting ways to do that.
Oilcloth overalls would be cool. Like some Frog togs but heavy duty. Good video. Just needs the old school music...Feeling gooooood...back in the woods.
The treatment to make your own oil cloth is dirt cheap. You can turn basically any sheet into an oil cloth tarp. It's just equal parts paraffin wax and mineral oil by weight, melt slowly in a big coffee can and mix together. Then you just iron it into the cloth. You can't over treat it, you will just iron out the wax.
Costly but then again, we’re talking quality stuff and could possibly save your life and keep you dry give you shelter. That bedroll set up is fantastic as well
Just finished the drying of an oilcloth sack. 1 old cotton pillowcase, 1:3/4 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, 8 grommets, and a cinch cord. Aint pretty but its functional.
I have been thinking about swapping out my current tarp for maybe Oilcloth but undecided because I was also considering a Gum blanket both options seem they would be close in weight and both equally durable maybe someone could throw out some pros.& cons ?
Dave you are such a sell out! I mean who would make such grate content and education material for free and post it on RUclips for free. Throwing great well tested gear brands out there like that. We all know you are in it for the product placements that give you back penny’s on the dollar. Getting rich off all that free content. Hahahaha Love your channel and philosophy.
I have had and used Tentsmith products for years. I have the watch coat. You did not mention the Tentsmith Tarp Tent. I guess you no longer carry it. I like it better than just a tarp.
Fantastic gear, but way out of my budget. The tarp and bed roll system is amazing. All you need is a haversack. But it's still not good for long distances. Unless you've got a horse. So the lk35 paired with a lavvu is still unbeatable in my opinion for durability and manoeuvring over distances. Or for short day trips the romainan bread bag with the canvas tent/cloke. Both affordable and bomb proof
Dang I like that poncho! I was thinking the other day that those military ponchos should be made like a tent smiths 😂 though I thought it would be awesome to maybe integrate a wool blanket like those oilskin tarp wool blanket hybrid things.

I have the 8 x 8. It's a great tarp! I'd love some more Tentsmiths gear. Thanks for the video, Dave! 👍
Excellent! I really enjoyed the bit about the bedroll. Thanks!
👍👍👍

I have a camp stove just like yours. Got it from my Grandmother. It is older then me and I am 65.
What a great system! So versatile. Love it! Thanks Dave!!!!
Years ago, I had a Tentsmith Baker Tent with all the fixings. I am a fan of Tentsmiths.
Dude!!! that foresters quilt is needed!!!!!!!!
that looks like excellent kit options. the toughest part will be which piece i am going to buy. thanks for all the R & D you put into your products.
Excellent stuff, ESPECIALLY THAT BEDROLL SYSTEM! That’s fantastic!
As soon as I saw Tentsmiths I knew I couldn’t afford it
Wow Dave, that is some incredible gear. What a good video.
Always excellent information and well done videos. Thanks very much.
I have been drooling over the original watchcoat since they first came out!!
I really like that watchcoat. The tips and demo on the bedroll was very helpful. Thanks
Holy shit..!! That Forester's quilt looks legit..!!!

I really like the new way you drop your content and direct these videos. Very easy to watch and consistent!
Great versatile gear. Thanks Dave

Awesome gear! I really want that watch coat. Thanks for the video and for sharing these gear ideas with us.

Great overview of your oil cloth product line. It will definitely help me make an informed decision about which items to purchase.
This gear/kit review was a very good one, Dave!
Love our 10x10 Tentsmiths tarp.
I'm liking that foresters quilt, wondering how well it will work with my watch coat.
Love the oil cloth products Dave!
However I have seen you now in a few videos that you have that vest on.
Can you give any description or links to it?
all right you finally got me . with the poncho and liner i can give up the military ponchos which are getting harder and more expensive to find. if i can afford it im in.
Huge fan of oilcloth.
Awesome overview.
Very cool Dave keep up the good work.

I really like the watch coat with a large hood. I like it a lot better than the poncho.
Nice products dave
You rock Dave
Thanks for Your teaching.
Awesome bunch of gear
Super informative video! Thanks sir
Ty Dave..
Many people have used and love tent smiths cool video as always dave!
Good stuff Dave.
Good vid. Thats a handy peace of kit.
Great knowledge thank you for sharing 👍

Great video!!! Forgot about the gun sleeve.
Zahn is my favorite part.
Outstanding!
awesome gear, love the functionality
Great now I have to buy more stuff !
I'm too wimpy to carry that heavy tarp but wow, the watch coat, poncho, quilt those things look incredible!
Hi Dave , how well does that watchcoat block the wind ?
Dude, I have to ask you a question. Now, I know you are a bushcraft guy and a survival guy, but if you were a glamping guy, what would that look like stuffed into the back of an suv? Like, glamping combined with bushcraft and survival, lol! I bet you would have some interesting ways to do that.

I don't think you've made a bad video yet! Great video Dave!

What about using carabiners instead of wood toggles on the bed roll ?carabiners won’t loosen up and fall out
Those oilskins products look great! But I can’t bring myself to buy clothing coated in flammable oil.
Good stuff. I think the Poncho would be Ideal.
Great video as alway
Tip of the hat sir!
Dave, where did you get that Tiger Stripe jacket ? It looks sweet !
Equipment made and design by woodsmen for woodsmen.Great stuff.
Awesome, thinking about a Belmont blanket here soon
Thanks for a great video. I'll have to look into the oilcloth products. Durability would offset price in my opinion.
Costly but then again, we’re talking quality stuff and could possibly save your life and keep you dry give you shelter.
That bedroll set up is fantastic as well
I can't wait to start investing in oil cloth gear! The watch coat looks a bit like gandolf from Lord of the Rings.
Just finished the drying of an oilcloth sack. 1 old cotton pillowcase, 1:3/4 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, 8 grommets, and a cinch cord. Aint pretty but its functional.
I'm going to buy it all!

Poncho ties....make them elastic for a bit more movement.
How resilient to tears is the thinner outter 'rainsuit' (oversized jacket and pants long enough to protect the slacks underneath)?
What tiger strip jacket you wearing?
Great video thank you
Dave is the King
I'm not familiar with oil cloth...how robust is it? How well does it repel water and does it need to be recoated as it wears down? And how?
About a sash like the voyager ceinture fléché

I have a watch coat without the hood iam going to get the hooded one.
I have had and used Tentsmith products for years. I have the watch coat. You did not mention the Tentsmith Tarp Tent. I guess you no longer carry it. I like it better than just a tarp.
Would the watch coat with a hood still be considered a slicker?
I would day yes
Fantastic gear, but way out of my budget.

Both affordable and bomb proof
Does the poncho also work in conjunction with the Swagman Roll? (In terms of toggle attachements and length etc)
Yes buddy
Watch coat reminds me of having to tie a judo gee, with hood
How do I go about entering your school for survival?
Go to Selfrelianceoutfitters.com and select training tab for information on courses
Thanks Dave
@Davidcanterbury Any plans on restocking the 6x8 shelter half tarp
It’s on our site just click the link in the description box
survival of civil war situation that's about to start in Texas please ?
Nice.
Similarities to what the Mongolians are using for centuries. We know it works. Cheers DC from Australia.
Love the watch coat but can’t spend that much
Oil cloth is way better than pvc or plastic raincovers, they dont rip as easy and and more breathable..col products!
Ooo is that a new single shot meat in the pot?!
As the little guy on Laugh In used to say "Verry Interesssting"
Cool...
27:24 I enjoyed the video but at about the last 1/4 of the video the sound went down to a whisper.
Wax canvas/ oil cloth, you just can’t go wrong for the money….
Dang I like that poncho! I was thinking the other day that those military ponchos should be made like a tent smiths 😂 though I thought it would be awesome to maybe integrate a wool blanket like those oilskin tarp wool blanket hybrid things.
