Dave I hope all the good things in life happen to you and yours...you have brought out my love of carving and creating...I've made several slingbows, deer antler and broken file knives, pack frames and so much more...lately ive made 11 canes for veterans and family, supervisors and friends...all for free...I've made many things in my life including bongs n pipes when I was a young moron. but you brought my ninjaneering back. I work hard and poor and it killed me for a long time but because I've been crafting again the past few years my mood has done a complete turn around. I give away all my crafts and ive made more than a handful of hard men tear up handing them a surprise cane made just for them. I'm a simple man and get squirrly writing this...I owe a lot to you sir and never thanked you. so Dave thank you for giving my life back and even though I can't afford any merch I've told so many people about your channel and why I smile now...
Just a tip, the 3/8" ammo for slingshots can actually be stored in older damaged sections of slingshot tubes, its a good way to keep them from being loose in a pouch or pack and they wont clink against stuff and scratch anything up, you just force one after another into the tube until you have filled it, its a good way to keep loose ammo from getting spilled. It also makes them more compact, just tie the ends or use tape or string to close the ends.

But because I've watched many of your videos I've been able to teach my friends how to survive and hunt. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. That is a good complete kit. You can live pretty well around the water. We do right now. Too many people think that they can live off of larger game. They are not always around. Plus, once you start moving around an area in the woods, the larger game goes someplace else. Fish are always there. Especially panfish. The water is the first place I think of when I want food. Thanks for a great video.
Excellent . I have a food procurement kit in my utilities dry sack that consists of a fishing PVC tube with tackle, a pair of rat traps, 2 frog gigs and netting + a net needle. A slingshot is in my future for sure.
Good stuff, as always, Dave. I have a very similar kit. Found an old FG takedown bow like that at a yard sale a few years ago, bought it for 2 dollars, it tested at 42 lbs. and shoots great.
Howdy Young'n! Back in the 50's, I had made a simple "survivel" kit, everything fit into an old enamel coffee cup. Everybody thought I was paranoid, stupid etc, but most everything I needed to last a few days was in there, except a sleeping bag. I just stuck it in my pocket, a little tight fitting, but it worked😁
You know I'm not that suprised, but probably still wouldn't have thought of it having never used one (wetlands are drying out around here, long drought, development, cities abusing them, no amphibians left b/c of crop and mosquito spray, no snakes).
I love it on those rare occasions when I discover a series of vids with just good, effective, we'll thought out, an extremely valuable information. his vids aren't just a sales pitch an his advice is practical and field tested. when I find a channel like this it's almost therapeutic to watch an learn from. keep the vids coming... love the vids sir!! thank you
Thanks for the many suggestions, Dave. Wheels on a bow are quite durable, but not necessary and add weight and take up room. I have an old compound that I believe came with two sherpas to help carry it. Are the takedown arrows made to different spine? Correct flex of the arrow on release makes a difference in accuracy. Seems a person's chances of getting a meal would be better by going for shallow water carp rather than land game, from my experiences, so the fishing reel seems valuable. And too, in a real situation, it would be hard to have too many arrows. They can permanently disappear in a back yard, even moreso in the field - even with a lot of effort evaluating and looking. Thanks again for all the information- packed videos.
You have a gift Dave, I must give you that. Ive learned so much from watching you. I must say this, from your teachings, I posses in my arsenal many of the items you discuss. Was at the store one time and I grabbed a few sling shots, momma said why in the hell you getting those, and I said because Dave has them so they must be important. I'm pretty good with a sling shot now. Funny I have a metal box full of guns and ammo but my favorite things are all my traps, gear and my EDC side knife.
Dave I took a length of pic pipe and glued a cap on on end then mounted it to the side of my bucket and put my bow in that and slip another cap on top to store my bow out away from the eliments! For my trecking lpack I sewed up a leather pouch to slide it in with a flip over tie down flap!
Learn something new from a lot of your videos. Today it was Steel Rat Traps. I had no idea they existed. Will have to look into them and possibly gradually replace the standard wooden rat traps I use now. (and btw people they work great for squirrel especially when baited with peanut butter). ,Never was all that good with a bow so will stick with the "sling bow" and save some space in my pack. I actually do better with it than a conventional bow. Also can use it for bow fishing and a couple of sets of extra bands weigh practically nothing. I would include a few "yo-yo" in my fishing kit. Quicker to set than making "spring" type fishing set ups. Set a few of those out....a few rat traps out and allows me time to scout an area and/or see if I can procure game by hunting while gathering any edibles that might be in the area.
Great video. Great ideas on tools to have that can save a life in an emergency. Some of the tools are new to me and I have no clue where to acquire them. I.e. Figure four dead fall trap. Fishing ring. .

Really good and thought provoking video, Dave. I really had not thought about the trapping aspects of such a kit before, but now believe it should be included. One question, though. With your take-down arrows ( which, by the way, I think are a brilliant inclusion to the kit as they allow for so much versatility ) couldn't those also be used with your sling shot, provided you had the right type, to gather smaller game at shorter ranges if you were without a bow? Good morning Dave.... As usual this old hillbilly thinks you video was great. Your videos are required watching for my grandkids. Back in the day this was "Way of Life" knowledge for us. Hunting and gathering was not about sport, but about not starving.... lol. Not so much today when these skills have become a hobby. Every time I took a walk with Grandpa, Dad or Uncle Bill it was a learning expierence. God has gifted you as a teacher..... thanks so much for passing these life skills on.... BTW - I have seen $300 knives that were throw away knives because they were of no long term use. Pretty handles often break when used.... and blades that dull with one use... well, lets just say they don't do the job. I have given all of my Cold Steel knives away for the previously mentioned reasons except for their throwing knife which my grandkids and I play with....
Great video dave :) personally i carry a small foldable fishing rod wich i just strap onto the outside of my pack, and a light airgun with just enough power to take a rabbit, ofcourse i cannot always take those with me so ill be looking at some of your options in the future for a light carry
I would definitely add one or two dozen YoYo fishing reels. For the size/weight they are one of the most effective food gathering tools available. With even the most basic game knowledge you could keep yourself in small game and fish with next to no effort. Between the YoYo traps, a pack fishing kit, and a .22LR pistol or take down rifle with 100 rounds of ammo, you wouldn't need any of that other stuff on the table. Not sure why you included the caveat about non-firearm, because I don't go into the woods without one, and haven't since I was about 13 years old. The time a snapping turtle snapped the tip off a Buck knife when I went to dispatch it while fishing was the last time I even went fishing without a firearm. Semper Fi

This is one of the best videos which you have made. I have two fishing kits, snares, 2 plastic rat traps, 5 figure 4 traps. I also have a slingshot which I got from Self Reliance Outfitters. I think the snares may be useful but it really requires more woodcraft knowledge than I have or can acquire. I like your rake down arrows. I have a pack of three. Except for fishing, most of my food acquisition will be by passive means such as the rat traps and figure fours. Please keep up the good work.

My bushman works better for me than most knives, chopping, butchering, made a self bow with mine. So I crapped slightly when you said throw away. My discontinued mini bushman is a treasure. But the price .... You are correct! Great video!

Great vid Dave- so many possibilities with these choices - makes alot of sense and practical when a firearm is out of ammo or lost - I noticed your choice of the cold steel bushman "throwaway" knife and implicated it as a possible spear - im wondering if the "spear" tip that you sell on your website wouldn't be a great thought too - or would it be too "specific" and not multipurpose enough ? and speaking of the spear tip and other "arrowhead" items what are your thoughts? I'm always learning from every vid - thanks much !!!

Kinda surprised you didn't mention the pocket hunter adapter for the slingshot after all the time you guys spent developing it and showing how effective it is.
Also, the number 1 meat gathering tool that you have not added to your kit (I understand why) is a .22lr rifle. Anything from a scoped takedown Ruger 1022 to a Henry Survival rifle. Invaluable.
I just watched your common man trapping video and I was wondering why nobody talks about changing the belt with a load bearing belt with pouches. I put a utility belt with on mine that moves the weight to my hips better than the original belt. I put a couple pouches on it. They are East German AK-47 pouches with the woodland rain camo. Just something I noticed.
Dave, what is your opinion of having a sling bow option rather than the longbow. I think it's easier to shoot and just as powerful given the right slingshot and rubber strands. Then the volume and weight of the bow could be used for more arrows and sling shot ammo.
Nice gear of all but one new item, the bow. I went through most comments but found nothing indicating where to find them. Dave mentioned his bow was 70 years old so I am guessing it may be impossible to build this gear set. Any affordable fiberglass take-down bows available?
This doesn't pertain much to this video but have you ever used dryer lint as tinder or if dry, surefire. A dime size piece of dryer lint will start fire super easy and burn for a few seconds, and it's absolutely free
So having never snared anything what could get trashed after one use with those snares. That cable looks pretty sturdy for something that just wraps right undo the neck.
I have all of this in some form in my kit except the rat traps. Id rather eat cadmium than rat, haha. Nice to see the Cuban yoyo get some exposure. I love mine. I put 50lb test spyder wire on it that had a 12 lb diameter size. I can catch the smallest to the largest fish.
I am surprised you added a bow rather than the "Pocket Hunter" adaptation for the sling-shot. I did a search for metal rat traps and could not find one, where would I find those at?

The bushman can help make the gig and figure 4 trap as well as other things, plus it's a spear. I bought one at such an unbelievable price.

Kinda surprised you didn't mention the pocket hunter adapter for the slingshot after all the time you guys spent developing it and showing how effective it is.
Also, the number 1 meat gathering tool that you have not added to your kit (I understand why) is a .22lr rifle. Anything from a scoped takedown Ruger 1022 to a Henry Survival rifle. Invaluable.
I just watched your common man trapping video and I was wondering why nobody talks about changing the belt with a load bearing belt with pouches.
I put a utility belt with on mine that moves the weight to my hips better than the original belt. I put a couple pouches on it. They are East German AK-47 pouches with the woodland rain camo.
Just something I noticed.
Dave, what is your opinion of having a sling bow option rather than the longbow. I think it's easier to shoot and just as powerful given the right slingshot and rubber strands. Then the volume and weight of the bow could be used for more arrows and sling shot ammo.

Nice gear of all but one new item, the bow. I went through most comments but found nothing indicating where to find them. Dave mentioned his bow was 70 years old so I am guessing it may be impossible to build this gear set. Any affordable fiberglass take-down bows available?
A Shemagh would do the same thing that the net rag you mentioned. There not that tightly woven.

This doesn't pertain much to this video but have you ever used dryer lint as tinder or if dry, surefire. A dime size piece of dryer lint will start fire super easy and burn for a few seconds, and it's absolutely free

So having never snared anything what could get trashed after one use with those snares. That cable looks pretty sturdy for something that just wraps right undo the neck.

I have all of this in some form in my kit except the rat traps. Id rather eat cadmium than rat, haha. Nice to see the Cuban yoyo get some exposure. I love mine. I put 50lb test spyder wire on it that had a 12 lb diameter size. I can catch the smallest to the largest fish.

so Dave. could you get with a manufacturer and produce new takedown bows like that Ben Pearson similar to what you did with your Survivor slingshot
I am surprised you added a bow rather than the "Pocket Hunter" adaptation for the sling-shot. I did a search for metal rat traps and could not find one, where would I find those at?
