I've taken to riding a 7'5" Pyzel Padillac quad in everything from 2-10ft (hawaiian scale). If you have the technique to get step-ups going fast in smaller waves you can do bigger turns than on a shortboard. As Isaac says the only thing they don't do as well is really tight pocket surfing.
