This woman gets it. You're a shinning beacon of hope for both sides of the argument, getting the fact these kids may come from different backgrounds and is therefore respectful.
@@bodoorgeest - I suppose the real question is: do you want to change people, or not. Is your goal progress, or comeuppance? Or... we can keep shouting and denigrating everyone we disagree with, and reinforce their stereotypes of us, thus furthering the divide in this country.
You handled that perfectly. My husband is a high school teacher in rural Alabama, and has had to deal with students using hate speech about race, sexuality, and religion. He tells his kids everyone can be judged for something in their own lives, and how would they like it if someone decided to hate them for something they can do nothing about? Also, being that 99% of his class claims to be Christian, he also points out that Jesus said judge not, lest ye be judged (paraphrasing here). That usually gives them pause for thought and sometimes even starts meaningful discussions that lead to more openmindedness in some of the students. You may not change the world, but you can change a few hearts and minds for the better, and that is a wonderful start.
Your husband seems very familiar. Because I had a 8th grade history teacher exactly like him in Alabama. He was such a awesome guy and your husband is awesome too!
In a public school, unless it's otherwise specified, Religion takes a back seat! By that, I mean that people have the right to believe whatever they want to, but once they step foot into a public school, they're not allowed to preach it and use their faith as a crutch for harassing others!
To bad my class mates dont know that because allmost everyone in my class uses gay as a insult but when I say that that's a complement to me they say it's a sin and I'm going to hell .....
I love teachers like this. I had an amazing science teacher last year, he put a gay couple in a word problem and talked about gender identity when students asked about it. He also used bisexual as an example for the prefix “bi” and just little stuff like that made me feel so safe.
@Trevor Fluck shut the fuck up Jehovah Witness, you trynna tell everyone to join your little cult to shun kids for not believing in y'all's made up god

You CAN NOT change who you are on the inside. You CAN though suppress your feelings, give in to peer or church pressure and live a lie for the rest of your life. @Rob S Again, no scientific stats to back you up, just a conversion therapy program who fixes it to their benefit. @Rob S as I've said you keep telling yourself that. There is a whole wide world out there that proves that your beliefs are not what you claim they are and proves that your beliefs are not always true
@Alexa @ImFromDriftwood -- One way you could've handled this is even more basic: "Don't insult or mistreat someone. Not if you think they are wrong, or too different, or if you dislike them. Treat them how you would want to be treated. Do not call someone names and try to pick a fight with them. It's not right. Don't do it." If the student complains the other student is gay, then you can get more specific. "Don't diss / harass / yell at / call names / beat up some kid, just 'cause you think he/she is gay." And verbal and physical harassment and profanity are punishable. I'd say calling a kid gay, queer, (any of those other words) would count as profanity and disrespect and trying to start a fight. -- And yes, this is particularly common for boys bullying boys, calling them gay, sissy, girly, questioning their manhood, etc. Big city or small town, anywhere in the US. Still common.
Good work, but she missed an opportunity to point out that what is a “sin” is based on specific religious beliefs, and not everyone in the US has the same religion. I however do not have that *opinion* and if anyone else also does not have that *opinion* that is perfectly fine". [And maybe write it down, if I have reason to be paranoid about their responses, and ask the learners afterwards if they agree that that is *exactly* what I said]. If I were in her situation I would say say something along those lines and hope for the best that the school does not make it into a problem (if they are religious or traditional. And honestly what is wrong with that statement; what argument, what statement is genuinely going to have a problem with it; other than; "I am/we are intolerant bigots who think you are "pushing homosexuality" [reference; evidence of such a thing being possible required) on the children, we believe "gay" is unacceptable and now you need to be in lots of trouble". I honestly can't think of another argument reason for being in significant/meaningful trouble for such a comment.
+Peter Smythe Maybe I would word the statement slightly differently, maybe instead of; "No it's not", I would begin with; "I don't think it is and very many people also do not think it is a sin ...."
