@@bodoorgeest - I suppose the real question is: do you want to change people, or not. Is your goal progress, or comeuppance? By showing them some empathy and understanding, then helping them to undo such a mindset with patience and respect to the person, she is creating new allies, and giving people a chance to come out of the closet.
Or... we can keep shouting and denigrating everyone we disagree with, and reinforce their stereotypes of us, thus furthering the divide in this country.

You handled that perfectly. My husband is a high school teacher in rural Alabama, and has had to deal with students using hate speech about race, sexuality, and religion. He tells his kids everyone can be judged for something in their own lives, and how would they like it if someone decided to hate them for something they can do nothing about? Also, being that 99% of his class claims to be Christian, he also points out that Jesus said judge not, lest ye be judged (paraphrasing here). That usually gives them pause for thought and sometimes even starts meaningful discussions that lead to more openmindedness in some of the students.
You may not change the world, but you can change a few hearts and minds for the better, and that is a wonderful start.

In a public school, unless it's otherwise specified, Religion takes a back seat! By that, I mean that people have the right to believe whatever they want to, but once they step foot into a public school, they're not allowed to preach it and use their faith as a crutch for harassing others!

You CAN NOT change who you are on the inside. You CAN though suppress your feelings, give in to peer or church pressure and live a lie for the rest of your life. @Alexa @ImFromDriftwood -- One way you could've handled this is even more basic: "Don't insult or mistreat someone. Not if you think they are wrong, or too different, or if you dislike them. Treat them how you would want to be treated. Do not call someone names and try to pick a fight with them. It's not right. Don't do it." If the student complains the other student is gay, then you can get more specific. "Don't diss / harass / yell at / call names / beat up some kid, just 'cause you think he/she is gay." And verbal and physical harassment and profanity are punishable. I'd say calling a kid gay, queer, (any of those other words) would count as profanity and disrespect and trying to start a fight. -- And yes, this is particularly common for boys bullying boys, calling them gay, sissy, girly, questioning their manhood, etc. Big city or small town, anywhere in the US. Still common.

  • @broddr

Good work, but she missed an opportunity to point out that what is a “sin” is based on specific religious beliefs, and not everyone in the US has the same religion. And 20% of people respond “none” when surveyed about religion, so while they have a personal morality, they don’t believe in sin at all.

(2:13) I think a bit of assertive firmness is a good strategy, simply say something like; "No it is not; some religious people have that *opinion* and anyone is allowed to have that *opinion* as long as that *opinion* as long as they do not verbally use that opinion to hurt others and hurt their feelings, because hurting other and their feelings is not acceptable because no-one would want others to hurt them or their feelings. I however do not have that *opinion* and if anyone else also does not have that *opinion* that is perfectly fine". [And maybe write it down, if I have reason to be paranoid about their responses, and ask the learners afterwards if they agree that that is *exactly* what I said].
If I were in her situation I would say say something along those lines and hope for the best that the school does not make it into a problem (if they are religious or traditional. And honestly what is wrong with that statement; what argument, what statement is genuinely going to have a problem with it; other than; "I am/we are intolerant bigots who think you are "pushing homosexuality" [reference; evidence of such a thing being possible required) on the children, we believe "gay" is unacceptable and now you need to be in lots of trouble". I honestly can't think of another argument reason for being in significant/meaningful trouble for such a comment.

I’m trying to convince our school guidance counselor to do a pride lesson (what it means, coming out struggles, pronouns, not using gay as an insult). I think it could really benefit our school, but A. All of the teachers in my school are heterosexual and married
    B. A lot of them don’t even care or think it’s an inappropriate topic
    C. I’m pretty sure some of them are homophobic
    D. They aren’t very educated on the subject, and there are some homophobic buttchunks of parents that would deem this as unnecessary and forcing gay culture upon children. Just because gay people have a little freedom to be who they are after multiple centuries.

Wait a minute in confused.. Isn't this a part of the curriculum? Like it's a part of the teachers profession to teach students that bullying or degrading someone based on religion, sexual orientation, gender etc. it's wrong and acctually illegal?

It is truly about time that a Teacher OR ANYONE else in. a situation where they oversee. children under sat 12 refrained fron discussing their sexuality .It is one thing to discuss Birds & Bees etc. As they apply to educating those in their class BUT not their personal sexual activities....Yes I do think that adolescents within the. appropriate subject , Biology for example should learn ALL.forms of procreation in a common sense way .Of course they will.smirk .I was in a Co Educational environment & we all but made our Biology Master ( first year teaching) bolt just by staring. unblinkingly !!! & nothing wrong with adolescents. learning about precautions .Transmitted diseases after all IF they have been taught history they have surely learnt about plagues & transmitted sexual disease. Nothing wrong with learning that some are born with chromosome problems & encouraged to.be BOTH kind & open minded exactly as toward a mentally deficient , cerebral palsy etc. But there should be NO.coercion in ANYNfirm & nowadays thete is. Many.I know are turning to Home Schooling & my circle is in NO.way has a .narrow perspectI've ......

She clearly does not understand the culture and. CHILDREN. She should’ve contacted parents. And you won’t be fired for being gay in Mississippi NOBODY CARESSSSS. No you can’t be an advocate because that’s what she’d get fired for, being in children business. That’s too personal. I hope she gets is for real because bullying is what she should’ve addressed. Always refer them to the counselor and administrators and PARENTS

I am so tired of people pushing their narcissistic obsession with their sexuality on me.
Maybe they should become responsible and adult,
She seems very shallow and annoying.
