My music teacher refused to let me and my boyfriend work in pairs during the lesson. We asked him why and he said I will tell u afterwards. So after the lesson he said that he felt uncomfortable because we’re gay. I told him that we’re not out to anyone yet so don’t mention it to the class and the next week he said in front of the entire class “Ben and Conner you two can not work together. I told you last week!” Then everyone looked at us and he said “does anyone feel comfortable swapping partners. Preferably a girl so I know nothing is going to happen between them”. I was so mad that I stormed out the class and when he came to talk to me he said “It’s not my fault your gay. I’m just trying to protect the other students”. He’s the worst teacher ever. I think all homophobic people just need a little sense in there lives! I’m 14, what did he expect me to do!?

Hydrochloric Acid That's not how luck works, babe. Tell your own story, don't discredit someone else's. This attitude of "someone else has it worse, so I should suck it up and stick it out" is how bigotry grows and spreads. I rebuke that toxic shit.

ruealgie Well, yes you are. I went through some hard stuff in my life, and a big part of my healing when I was in therapy were the thoughts that I wasn’t the only person to have gone through it and that other people had it worse than I did. I found it very helpful to look at what was good in my life, how good I actually did have compared to some other people, in spite of what I was going through. It didn’t make me feel superior, but it made me count my blessings.

Both are examples of highly unprofessional behaviour. The primary skills of a counsellor are Accurate Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard (akin to loving kindness) and Congruence (akin to self awareness). The first counsellor would appear to be lacking in all three skills but having an abundance of petty hatred.

mark anderson Buzz off and leave those who are part of the LGBTQ Community alone! We are not mentally ill at all since we are clearly not in any type of asylum and have to given equal rights as human beings. The only one who’s anywhere close to “mentally ill” is you for not sitting down, talking with someone in the LGBTQ Community, and getting to know them before you judge them. In the Bible I believe it says something like “Let those who have not sinned be the ones to cast the first stone.” I am a young openly gay man and I know this because I also attend church. Please don’t assume that you know everything about life for everyone, because you clearly don’t.

All the counseling, therapeutic, psychological, and psychiatric associations agree that sexual orientation is not changeable. This is part of their ethical code. Therefore, any counselor that tells you what this one did should be reported to their professional association and the association will take away their credentials. Imagine how much damage this "counselor" has done through the years.

Professional counsellors (and I am one of them) must set aside their own values when counselling others. It is never about what the counsellor approves of or not. It is always about the clients and from their own perspective. It is unprofessional to impose directly or indirectly one's views on the often vulnerable people who come to us to seek help.
I would have asked Nephi what it feels like to be himself. I would have been interested to know about the strengths and challenges in his life. The main focus initially would have been "who is Nephi?" and from his own perspective, untainted by the pressures of others. The counselling room is supposed to be a safe space....

The guy from the video was getting therapy because he was trying to wrestle with the feelings he was having because he had to hide his truth about being gay. Basically he was just needed someone to help him gain the confidence to talk openly about it, not try to make himself straight. I hope my reply does not sound snarky I do not mean to attack or critize, just inform. Thank you and have a great day/night.

I’m so glad that younger gays have such better opportunities today, and have such a higher chance for acceptance.
It’s not “easy” for anyone. But it just makes me think of my own youth. I’m 43 now I’m 2020. Growing up where there’s was not a single gay character on TV. And only a couple of gay-themed movies. Which were either straight actors playing gay, or they were low budget B-movies. And that was it. And nobody was free to be open and honest with others unless they were in a bigger city, or just had unusually accepting families and friends.
I’ve had a lot of difficulty trying to mediate between Christians and gays. Being a Christian gay person, I feel hated by BOTH sides because of the other. Anyone professing to be a Christian should truly be someone whom gays could RUN to for love, safety, and support. But sadly, that is the opposite of what we have. Christians today are NOT doing what God told them to do, which was LOVE unconditionally, and offer comfort and help to ANYONE in need. In need of anything. Period. It has made me feel “not good enough” for the Christians, and not good enough for the LGBTQ+ community. But, I digress.lol. Just wanted to add my thoughts and love to this video, and I hope everyone is eventually able to openly live their truth. 😘🙏🏼

The counselor should have immediately been investigated and terminated by the university and also been reported to the appropriate state professional practice board for investigation and possible sanctioning. Some state legislators and governors especially in “trifecta states” (where both legislative bodies and the executive branch are controlled by the same party - and it’s not the one that begins with a d) have been quietly backtracking on holding up and fully enforcing professional standards and have threatened implicitly, and sometimes explicitly, other state offices and agencies that would normally do so in recent years. The professional standards boards must be held accountable and kept public and transparent and the GLBT community must be vigilant on this in all 50 states along with all of our allies. The same dynamic is also happening with women’s healthcare, contraception services, HIV care and state of the art STI/HIV prevention practice and health and mental health services for low income people. Even medical.schools have dropped basic clinical skill training in human sexuality and assessment of clinical interviewing skills related to best practices and standards of care in patient care delivery.

00:52 There are as many gay hating women as their are
gay hating men. Also, if you're planning on going to a therapist for
sexuality and/or coming out related concerns, ask up front if he (or she) is a
"person of faith." Some christian universities are focusing on PhD
programs in psychology. They want to counsel from a "christian
perspective." That's double-talk for wanting to push christian dogma in
what is supposed to be a field of science.

Thanks for your honest testimony; may I add that it has never necessarily due to a bad or violent family background iin my experience. At nearly 80, I can look back and objectively day that my family life and background were both normal for the '40's and '50's, yet I and my best friend (similar background) were gay. Looking back, no familial cause. Genetic? No history of homosexuality in either background. So little likelihood of familial causess in my case or my friend's. Please make that distinction: my parents ( unless genetically, over which they had no control) had no "blame"" in my homosexuality a

I don't think the counselor was "homophobic" I think people are confusing that with prejudice. Prejudice mean a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. The counselor had a lack of reasoning or understanding of a situation, falling onto the "Gay people come from violent homes" argument (a preconceived notion), which I highly doubt makes a person gay. There is nothing wrong or "broken" about a homosexual. From my perspective and honest opinion is that homosexuality is uncommon, and I use that word LITERALLY, the homosexual nature is just that....uncommon, but not something that is new *cough* Roman Empire *cough*. A man or womans sexual attraction to the same sex does not really interfere in any major way how they function in life. If you put 10 men in a line and asked to pick out which man is gay from the 10, chances are you would guess wrong. Sexual attraction is something that develops over time, there has been no clear consensus on it being genetic. I depends on how one is raised, whom they interact with, and if they spend more or less time with the same sex. I would have to say you are more likely to have homosexual drives if you spend more time with the same sex, bonding, talking or engaging then with the opposite sex (I need more evidence of this though).
The video should have been aptly named "Gay Student Stands up to Prejudice Counselor" not because the Counselor has some "deep hatred of gays" but more of a preconceived idea on whatever spoon feed bullshit he was given. Also shouting out hateful things at a Counselor whom may/may not have know that was he believed is a lie. It's also our duty & obligation to make sure misinformation isn't spread, it ends up demonizing those that have been lied to, making them trust people less (which is what you DON'T want) but it may potentially have consequences then someone believing a lie that may extend to the person being violent (which is what you also don't want either).
I put forth my opinion on the situation. I just think a lot of anger is misplaced & a lot of issues need to be resolved, and the word "homophobia" needs to stop being thrown around. It doesn't help either.

In your description, I did not hear homophobia as much as I heard ignorance. ANYBODY in a position of offering therapeutic advice and counsel should be about finding better help for their clients, if they find the order is too tall for them to handle alone.
Of course, the hope is that if he/she is to answer to their superiors to explain such an action, that those people will be equivalently humble, allowing for a greater probability of help for all involved, in this and a whole boatload of other issues we have, as a species on this planet.

Nephi! I wish you were up in Canada. We have gay marriage throughout the country. If you want rest from it all, come up to Toronto, especially during Pride Week. Our premier (of the province of Ontario) is a lesbian - and quite a dynamo. The misconceptions re: the gay still shock me. I can't believe it is 2015. We are all very different - but all equal. I came out to my parents when I was 16. As it happened, right at the same time I had suddenly lost a lot of weight on an already slim frame, so my father called a psychiatrist and basically said while you're at it. So the conversation between me and the psychiatrist was this: Psychiatrist: So I understand that you are gay. Me: Yes. Psychiatrist: Do you have any problem with that? Me: No. Psychiatrist: OK, let's talk about your weight. This was in 1976, when such a reaction was by no means guaranteed or even very likely. I was fortunate.
