Your Dad is right these guys were banned from the Ed Sullivan show when they initially agreed to change the lyrics to this song but sang the original lyrics live anyway.. Lead singer Jim Morrison called himself the Lizard King and the band was well known for their drug influenced psychedelic music. He was a poet of the counterculture. Unfortunately Jim was a tragic member of the 27 club and left us far to soon

The Doors is a rabbit-hole, deep, dark and wide. "Light My Fire" is the entrance. This song exploded across the summer of '67 in a way I've seldom seen before or since, and permanently claimed the year as its own. It also pointed up the sharp distinction between FM radio (which played the entire song) and AM radio (which played the single version that had the instrumental solos cut out).
Getting into The Doors is one of those rite-of-passage things, which changes your perspective on nearly everything. You can kind of tell by looking at them which teenagers have found The Doors, and which have not. You'll find the Doors fans are much more interesting.

I'm pretty late to this party, but it goes beyond that....The Doors rarely used a bass player live, and only now and then in the studio. For the most part the bass parts are played by Ray on one keyboard with his left hand, at the same time he's playing the lead part on a different keyboard with his right. They weren't a band interested in overdubs much in the studio, so for the most part, what you hear on record is them laying down the bulk of the track live. Remarkable and somewhat under valued keyboard player.

It's so enjoying to see people listening to Light My Fire for the first time... it reminds you the feeling back in the days when you were about their age and had the same goosebumps

My hippie folks sure gave me the gift of music. Rays keyboard was one of my very first sound memories as a baby.

LA Woman is a great next song. Good as this one was, LA Woman is a masterpiece. Definitely have the lyrics _ready_ to view *after* you listen. Without spoiling it, the song has two meanings, and the principal one is not the direct one. Morrison was a gifted poet. There is LA the city that often burns in the hills, and there are its inhabitants who too often flame out... You'll love it.

It was standard practice in the early days of stereo sound to record instruments with one microphone on one "track" and then put into into either the left or right channel. It took a while for engineers to figure out how to use multiple microphones and balance the sound between left and right channels to position the instruments in the sound space. The distinct instrument on either left or right tells you it was recorded in the 1960's.

Check out their live performance of Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan show in 1967. Jim Morrison was nervous, I think, but this shows his natural charisma. He was the template for what became the notion of 'rock star'. ruclips.net/video/tEXlWgMOtqc/видео.html
Most notably, there is a backstory to this performance. They were asked to change the word 'higher' for the TV appearance. At the time, the word 'higher' was considered to have implications of drug use. The Doors either rebelled or forgot to change the lyrics and kept them as is. It's a whole story - lots of details which I won't go into here. But all available by googling.

Long ago I was in a band that played this song when it came out. Every time we played it the girls around your age would dance and sing along. They loved it! I'm happy to see that you did too.

an entire generation had the same reaction as you hearing him,, " that voice",, they were a one of a kind group from a one of a kind time in history. Their name was about going thru the Door to another type of perception, another reality if you will.

Four words: "When the Music's Over". Especially if it''s the version from "Absolutely Live", with Jim SCREAMING at the audience, lol.
