I was 14 and that summer my mom encouraged me to find some work, so I called the San Diego Tribune and found out our paperboy was giving up his route. The first Sunday mourning I went to his house and was folding papers in his living room while his mom slept in her bedroom next to us. He put on the Doors and I was surprised his mom didn’t come in to admonish us. That was 1968 and with part of my first months profit, I bought the Doors album. Still love their music to this day. The musicianship and poetry of their words was exceptional.

I think Light My Fire is the best introduction to Doors. It was their first hit song and the first song where many of us ever heard of Doors. Also, you did a good job of picking studio version (long, album, version too, not the shorter version that was played on AM radio). Doors got real crazy on stage, particularly lead singer, Jim Morrison. So live songs aren't recommended to newbies of Doors. I suggest you stick to studio versions of their extensive and very good catalog.

I so agree! Knowing a bit of history of what was happening in America in the mid 60's - Dr. Martin Luther King lead the famous civil rights march in Alabama from Selma to Montgomery, The Voting Rights Act, guaranteeing African Americans the right to vote became law, the Vietnam War was getting a lot worse & we were losing so many troops. In response, the Anti-War movement grew. Experimentation with drugs grew. The whole culture of hippies and peace & free love to which much of the music reflected these subjects.
I shared with Rico and Crys before they listened to it who some of the top singers & bands were during that time - The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beach Boys, & Pink Floyd - so they could mentally fit in The Doors.
Wow, so sorry I wrote you a novel! I just found you comment right on target. Thanks Keetah! ✌️ ☮️ 😂😂😂

People have said its a deep rabbit hole to go down, and they could not be more right. I have books of the Doors, of Jim, books of Jims poetry, posters, albums, european releases, japan releases. I have a large collection. Have had since I was a teenager in the mid 1980's. Their music has always been a huge part of my life. Many great songs. Jim was certainly a trip though. Very deep rabbit hole. My favourite song is THE END. It was featured in the vietnam war movie Apocalypse Now. The song is 11 minutes plus and a complete trip and a half. Highly recommended.

I love the carnival sound of Ray's organ; it's like a merry-go-round, spinning you around and around. Very much a 60's stoner epic. The Doors were unique, with a sound completely their own. Fun fact: most of their first and second albums came from an acid trip that Morrison had one night. He saw "a whole concert in my head", songs complete with lyrics, and when he later got together with Ray Manzarek to form a band, he came prepared with a whole sheaf of amazingly beautiful, surreal songs that vibrated with the energy of Morrison's trip, his time singing in the Acid Space. (This song is not Morrison's, however; it was written by the guitarist Robbie Krieger.)

Jim Morrison called the Lizard King, died at the age of 27 and became part of the club of celebrities who died at that age. Today his tomb is the second most visited in France, with the Eifel tower being the number one tourist attraction

I'll throw "Peace Frog" into your pile of suggestions for Doors songs. Somehow, it doesn't look like many people are mentioning "Break On Through", even though that was either their biggest or 2nd-biggest hit (with this being the other one.)

THE DOORS, "LIGHT MY FIRE". 1967 First Hit SONG. The start of the first band, that I thought was way ahead of it's time. VOCALS : Jim Morrison, GUITAREST: Robbie Robertson, KEYBOARDIST: Ray Manzarek, DRUMS: John Densmore. More... "RIDERS ON THE STORM", "ROADHOUSE BLUES", "L.A. WOMAN", "BACK DOOR MAN ", "BREAK ON THRU TO THE OTHER SIDE", "WHEN THE MUSIC 'S OVER", "CRYSTAL SHIP".

Correction: Guitarist: Robby Krieger for Doors. Robby Robertson with The Band, another great guitarist, song writer and influential band.

This got a lot of radio play so I got a bit burned out on it. But after not hearing it for a
couple decades, I can really appreciate it now. The keyboards in this steal the show.
