I still can’t believe that the Academy Awards snubbed this song of a nomination for the Best Original Song Oscar. This song is definitely the most defining song of the film and one of the first ones many think of when they think Little Mermaid songs and set a new standard to many of the Disney Princesses’ later “I Want” songs.

Ariel may have wanted to be where the people are, but it's safe to say she made us want to be part of her world.
With Howard's lyrics, Alan's composition, Jodi's vocals and Glen's animation; a masterpiece was made and made Ariel feel like a real person and everytime she reaches out of her cavern, I always try to reach for her hand.
    Ariel is my hero.
If I had a time machine to the part where Jeff Katzenberg considered cutting out the song, I would LITERALLY slap the lunacy out of him.

I dunno. The whole reason Ariel loved the human world is because humans are so innovative while merpeople express creativity mainly through music. I feel like the merpeople world isn't that desirable.

    • @hunterolaughlin

Then again, this wouldn’t be the last time Katzenberg nearly ruined a film with his executive interference. I mean, he nearly had Toy Story and computer animation as an animation medium canned with the infamous Black Friday Reel.
“If I had a nickel for every time Jeffrey Katzenberg nearly ruined a classic Disney animated film with his interference, I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.”

``The Little Mermaid'' is a masterpiece that changed Disney history, and was a huge success because it incorporated a musical style into animation.
Jodi Benson's singing ability on "Part of Your World" was truly amazing.
The 10 years starting in 1989 was a golden age, when masterpieces such as ``Beauty and the Beast,'' ``Aladdin,'' and ``The Lion King'' were born. Not only did the series produce a series of hits, but it also received high praise and numerous awards.
``The Little Mermaid'' was a work that ushered in this era, also known as the ``Disney Renaissance.''

I can't express with words, how much Part of your World is my favorite Disney song ever made and keep Ariel as my favorite Disney character, all thanks to the combine efforts of Howard Ashman, Alan Menken, Glen keane, Jodi Benson, John Musker and Ron Clements, and the talented artists, animators and musicians that works this incredible scene, from the magnificent visuals, all Ariel joyful and sadness expressions that where literally made IMPOSSIBLE to replicate on live action, the multiple layers of Passion you can felt on all parts that makes this song......Ashman passionate feelings for this song that go deeper many could assume when he wrote the lyrics been a gay person back in a time period that crucified you for been queer, Glen who's inspirations for design Ariel go deeper as he was inspired by the love of his life his wife, the animators who used Alyssa Milano as life action references for Ariel movements and some expressions, and the incredible direction of Musker and Clements who wanted to prove themselves to Disney so some day in the future Disney greenlight their own passion project....TREASURE PLANET, as I mentioned, so many layers that goes deep to make this song as important and powerful as it is, something really was not made to be translated to live action.

You mean misunderstood as in how everyone keeps saying it’s about her wanting a man.
Yet this song is clearly about her expressing how much she wants to become part of the human world. And it’s only after saving Eric does she want love.
She already has a longing for the world above before Eric and based on the size of her collection I’d say long long before Eric.
Eric is kinda the driving force which does help her take the plunge and dares to become human.
But he’s just like the icing on the cake really.
To become part of the world above was what came first love came second.
It’s a film which is all about her wanting more out of life.
Yet people generally overlook Ariel’s wants and dreams and they focus solely on the love aspect.

This was the first time I saw Haley act out that reaching scene and let me just say. I HATE IT! Like what the eff is she doing?! she look like she is a frigging zombie trying to aggressively grab someone to snack on their brain! It is really too bad though, that Disney didnt even bother to try for either style with Wish. I'll admit, when I was 3 years old, I fell in love with Ariel because of Part of Your World because of how I felt for her being a trapped individual and she was also pretty. Too bad I outgrew her when I turned 6 because I got into more boy appropriate stuff like video games, superheroes, ect and because of Disney for marketing the princesses as shallow girly barbie dolls, damsels, and romantics in the 2000s.

  • @theadaptationstationmaster

I can't understand why people say this is the best song because it doesn't actually make a good case for what the character wants. The only specific reasons Ariel gives for wanting to be a human and live on land is that "legs are required for jumping, dancing" and she bets that on land "they don't reprimand their daughters." Both these things are untrue. The movie shows plenty of sea creatures dancing, including Ariel herself in this very scene, and there are plenty of human daughters who get reprimanded. (Hey, sometimes they deserve it. 😉) The song sounds pretty but it gives no convincing reason to root for Ariel to get what she wants. I'm sorry but Sebastian clearly makes the better case with "Under the Sea."

I’m not well acquainted with the chord progression of Halle’s version of POYW vs the original. But if the Wikipedia article is accurate, the song is only raised by 1 semitone on the lower register and by 2 semitones on the upper register (and entire octave would be going up from C4 to C5). So, Halle’s version seems to be catering more to her range than it is completing change the song to incorporate more of her vocal abilities. That comes down more so to vocal direction.
So, I don’t believe taking the song up in key was done with the intention of affecting the audience’s reception of the piece. I think it was more so byproduct of altering the song to better suit Halle’s naturally higher vocal range.

Which I suppose that if they followed the actual Hans Christian Andersen's book, this song would not make any sense at all because of here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: When a mermaid turns fifteen, she is permitted to swim to the surface for the first time to catch a glimpse of the world above. When the 6 mermaids become old enough, each of them visits the upper world one at a time every year. As each returns, the Little Mermaid listens longingly to their various descriptions of the world inhabited by human beings.

Alan Menkan was in charge of the music of this movie like he was in the OG. Clearly he had ideas for her character since it’s a reimagined film but delivery and execution is questionable. But overall I still enjoyed the film and Halle’s performance.

    It’s good cuz it’s gay.
    I’m not joking.
The composers were gay and framed it as such. It’s still relatable, but they were writing from their struggle and passion.
I think it was Ashman who literally died from AIDs during post production before release in ‘89.
