Rock and Roll GOD! Had chills both shows! Lord Sutch was goofy/ comedy, maybe Alice got a tiny influence from him, but became WAY, WAY more....
Haha, better check that ticket stub again Ivan. Billion Dollar Babies tour ran in 73-74. I saw Welcome to My Nightmare in March '75 (my first concert, I was 11). Caught him again in '81 for Special Forces. Alice didn't tour in 1976 due to health concerns. Plans for the Go to Hell tour were scrapped and Alice resumed the Nightmare tour in 1977. It's ok though, I fully understand and empathise. There are large parts of the 70's and 80's that I'm still a bit fuzzy on too. For an awesome Alice site check out www.alicecooperechive.com . +QJo I'm pissed! I have been a fan of Alice Cooper since 1973 when I discovered that unique snake skin wallet of an album with all the pictures and the big dollar bill sitting on my brothers bed. I was only 6 years old at that time, but I would like to think I already had an eye for art and design and a sophisticated ear ahead of my years. My brother was 10 years older than me, so back then, way before the internet, this was my limited way of being introduced to adult music, other than top 40 radio. Back to why I'm pissed....I had no idea that kids of 9 and 11 were going to Alice Cooper concerts, let alone even allowed entrance! I think my head would have exploded if I was actually able to see him bite off the head of a chicken live!!! Hahaha! Seriously, I bought all his albums after that and listened to them along with some folk rock all the way thru high school when I started to outgrow Alice and began exploring prog-rock along with Mott, Bowie, and especially Lou Reed who then became my main idol. Now in the last few years I find myself sentimental for Alice again, and yet I realize that I never saw him in concert due to how young I was when I turned on to him. I know I can see him now, but I feel I may have missed that magic moment when I was enamored with him and even a bit frightened by him at the same time. They really need to invent that time machine already!
I know, right? I love Alice, but he always seems to imply that he and his band created shock rock, or the very idea of makeup and outfits for a rock n' roll band, and never appears to give anyone any credit for influencing HIM. Screamin' Jay Hawkins was doing "horror rock" with "I Put a Spell On You" way before Alice, but again, I've never heard Alice mention Screamin' Jay. And my biggest quandary is, who was first, Arthur Brown or Alice Cooper?! Because their makeup is almost IDENTICAL. So, without a doubt in my mind, one of them ripped off the other. I could never find a definite answer to that question. Both artists seemed to surface around the same time, and I've heard that they did know each other casually.
Black Death 1347 Well, Coop has said that he got the IMAGE and THEATRICALITY more from MOVIES and THEATER ( Vincent Price, Hammer, splatter, Grand Guigniol and stuff like that ) than from other rock acts, which I can believe. I just wonder why he stops with Manson Slipknot and Kiss. He actually had TWO different styles of make up. When he first began wearing it in the late 60's it was the beauty mark and big painted eyelashes that also kind of looked like little tarantula legs around his eyes ( ever seen that ? ). That was when the Alice persona was more androgynous. He then made his act and persona more horrorific and ghoulish and developed the make up style with the black greasepaint which became trademark and that he claims was based on the old image of the circus clown / freakshow barker.
Ian Findlay Yes, I know the tarantula legs makeup, but the design with the black greasepaint with the vertical lines down the center (his most famous face) is what I am baffled by, because if you check out pics of Arthur Brown (while his makeup wasn't always consistent, either), his design was practically identical. So I'm dying to know, who ripped off whose makeup? The first time I saw Arthur Brown's black and white "video" for his song "Fire" here on RUclips, I said, "Holy shit! Alice Cooper ripped that off!" If Alice came out a bit after Arthur, then Alice has a lot of 'splaining to do! I know the timeline is close. And again, Alice never seems to point to any MUSICAL ACTS as influences, which seems totally bizarre. Maybe that's why.
Black Death 1347 As for Screamin Jay, THAT guy was little more than a silly novelty act. Pretty gimmicky and funny and maybe sort of weird by 1950's standards. I've seen videos of his old tv performances, and he frankly reminded me allot more of Ricky Ricardo on that one episode of I Love Lucy when he got dressed up as a headhunter for a musical production number ( ever seen that ? ). But your right, his place in the evolution of rock theatricality shouldn't be overlooked either.
Ian Findlay Haha yeah, funny you mention that. I have the whole Lucy series on dvd, and I was just watching that episode again recently. Ricky is such an over-the-top nutball in that. I always liked that episode because Ricky's makeup is such a funny sight gag in itself, not to mention the fright-wig. Screamin' Jay for sure. However hokey, I could see a young Vince Furnier being impressed with it. Shit, I mean, Alice had a walking toothbrush onstage. I'd still like to hear a musical influence from him, and I think an answer to the Arthur Brown question could be a good place to start, at least visually.
Vince is a great guy, actually very smart and soft person. Unlike Gene, he makes his money by playing music and staging shows. Gene is a businessman and a larger than life image of himself, but you can't compare them. AC were there earlier and they, Vince first of all, were real freaks and pioneers the market and the audience weren't ready at all! Kiss were 'legal freaks' and they had more prepared audience and actually more investments, though they like to say they didn't. AC had been a failure before they became stars. You can't compare Ford and BMW so to say.
