I was born in 1982 so i like to tell my Vietnamese interlocutors "tôi là con chó". Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they wave their hands repeating "tuất! tuất!"
On an unrelated note, I really, really like the way Learn Vietnamese With Annie has turned along the years into the most insightful and interesting RUclips Channels to learn about Vietnam. But that's just how Scorpio people do things :D
Keep up the good work and greetings from Hanoi.
Cảm ơn anh nhiều nha!
I didn’t expect to get Rick Rolled while studying Vietnamese hahaha
Ha ha
There was a practice in older generations to have kids named after their zodiac. In my family, my great-grandmother was named Mão (northern name variant of Southern mẹo) and her sister was named Hợi
Very Interessant.
Thanks dear. 😊👍
I think that the reason why rabbit is changed to cat is that "Meo" is similar to the pronunciation of "卯" in Vietnamese
Pretty apparent, not to mention that they didn't have that many rabbits back in the day down south.
Rick rolled by Annie, what’s the world coming to? 😅 (How do you say “Rick rolled” in Vietnamese?)
This was fascinating. I knew basically about Chinese zodiacs but had no idea that people took it so seriously. Personally I find people here who pigeonhole others according to their zodiac sign infinitely annoying. 😬😜 Once I was at a party and a woman showed up who was an “expert” on the zodiac, and everyone had their pigeonhole. I found it kind of annoying, and it didn’t help that she talked like a loud chicken… Anyway, we talked for a while and she asked what my sign was. I said, “well, you really seem to know about this, so I’m going to let you guess.”
She was up for the challenge, and after a long analysis, said, “I think you’re an Aquarius!”
“That’s amazing,” I said. “How did you do that?!”
She answered, “Oh, you were so easy. The way you answered questions, your attitude, your manner, even your complexion, is so typical for Aquarius! What’s your birthday?”
“October 6,” I said.
“But…but…you’re not Aquarius, you’re a Liiibra!!!”
I played dumb and said, “Really? I never really paid attention to it, I always thought I was an Aquarius. Are you sure? Maybe I’m right on the edge?”
Well, oopsie! 😅 She didn’t talk to me the rest of the night. :-)
Thanks for the very enlightening video, Anne! People back home are aware of zodiac animals, but not everyone does know the difference between the calendar new year and the lunar new year, when the switch to another zodiac animal actually happens. So I've believed that my sign was a cat, until I learned that it is actually a tiger, because I was born in January, before the lunar new year. Not that it has affected my life in any way 😄
10:18 You just were "Rickrolled" !!! 😂👍
Extremely interesting topic and clarified a few things on the difference between Chinese and Vietnamese beliefs. As a late January baby I do prefer the simplified VN version of just using the year.
My partner and I are mẹo và tuất so it doesn't look like there is any positive or negatives for that.
Happy new year!!!
I would be interesting and useful to see more videos about culture like that
Does Vietnam's culture have any beliefs in the practice of magic either dark/black magic vs. light/white magic?
I'm just curious because right now in CA there is a Philipino man accused of murdering his wife and the Prosecution team claims this man used "spells" to try and keep his wife from leaving him (divorce) before she disappeared.
Can you do a video on the supernatural in Vietnamese culture? Do most Vietnamese believe in spirits & ghosts? How about superstitious beliefs?
Thank you very much for your fun and very educational videos.
Thank your for your great suggestion! I’ll think about it!
did you just watch the video by that chapter?! I literally watched it before this
@ Lee Anderson.
'That Chapter?' I'll have to check it out. No I was refering to the current Larry Millete case in CA.
Most ppl in Asia (East, Southeast, South) believe in ghosts & spirits, & black magic is used casually by a LOT of people, especially prominent businessmen who crave material gain. You'd be surprised.
Hello, I do not believe majority of the U.S. follows any regard of the Zodiac affecting lives or relationships. This should be different by the time I post this but at least 30% followed the influence of astrology and anything else related to the Zodiac system.
I do not intend to insult anyone that follows astrology but it looks like something more for fun.
Following the Zodiac to determine which person is compatible with another is like moving parts of an assembly line and people are not these "things". People have factors including skills independent of birth.
My opinion is too many great opportunities are missed.
nice
I heard that D in Vietnamese actually pronounced as Y in english young, year...
That’s true for Southern accents! In Northern accents D is pronounced like a Z.
My wife's parents never asked me...directly. Tôi tuồi Mùi, vợ tôi tuồi hợi. I hope that works!
Wow it’s one of those tam hợp groups!
@@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie Thanks! Great lesson! I've taken three classes but you have the most interesting lessons, so I owe you some money.
Ox is changed to water buffalo
good video though, appreciate your efforts
I guess not everyone follows the zodiac so closely, does religion play any part as to who follows the zodiac ?
Vietnamese SOCIETY follows it, it doesn't matter whether you believe in it or not. Even if you were Catholic in Vietnam/ Japan/ Korea/ China, you'd know what your own sign is if people asked you, & you'd be obligated to divulge. Also, you can't lie about your age (unless you have Asian skin & look 12 years younger) because when you say your sign people will automatically calculate your birth year by your looks/ behaviour.
@@Jumpoable thanks for helping me with this , I have experienced people calculating my age by my sign. I did wonder if catholic community follow it closely. It's very interesting.
10:46 Ox should be "con bò"
it's actually the water buffalo (trâu) in the Vietnamese zodiac, so the English should be changed
I am tuổi Tý, looking for ladies with compatible zodiac.
A Vietnamese girl that I really really like asked me what my Vietnamese zodiac animal was. I said that I was an OX (I had just found out by chance as a Christian church had these displayed by chance months before the Vietnamese New Year). I asked her what was hers and she said very sweetly that she was a PIG. Why do you think that she asked me? Was it because she wanted to see if we are a good match or not? As per the mythology, we are only an average match but I would always go out of my way to make her feel that we are the best match ever if she gives me a chance.
