Speaking as a singer/songwriter, this D55 knocked me off my feet. Sold.
I own a D55. If you haven’t tried one I strongly suggest strumming one of these beauties. The bass resonates your soul.
Wow that D55 sounds stunning. Didn’t think it would wipe the floor with the Martin but I kinda think it does
Every time I hear a D55 on youtube it blows me away. So powerful. Wow.
I would definitely go with the D-55. sounds much better than the Martin.
Man, the Guild sounded amazing! Although, Quinton playing the D-28 @ the end to me I could really hear that warm yet articulate mellow Martin tone that wins me over every time!
Another killer vid, thanks gentleman.
That Guild sounds great! I think I might prefer it to the sound of the Martin, which of course also sounds great.
I am totally blind and both guitars sound very similar to my ear. I am for which one has more bass. I prefer the hd28 over the d28 because of the more bass. I'd have to get my hands on a guild and actually play it and listen to someone else play it to really make up my mind. I've got a d18 that I absolutely love. If I had more money, I'd purchase a martin hd28 to go with it. I did play one hd28 once and it sounded amazing. Thanks Quinton and Paul for another great comparison.
I have both, and the D-55 is just a LITTLE better. But both are AMAZING. I have yet to get a J-200.
That D55 has some beef!
When he first hit that 55 it sounded like thunder. D55 all the way.
I have owned and played extensively a Martin J-41, Martin D-28, Martin D-42 custom (adirondack/Amazon rosewood), Martin 000-42 custom (Swiss spruce/Madagascar rosewood), Taylor 810 Brazilian, Taylor 814ce, and Taylor 914ce with an Engleman spruce top. You might tell I have been searching for a heart of gold. I just recently played a Guild D-40 and Guild D-55. Both have blown me away relative to my $14,000 Martin D-42 custom. I do not work for Guild, but if you need a heart of gold in tone, sweetness and volume, and do not wish to spend the money I have spent over the years in guitars, you will not waste your time with the Guild D-40 or D-55. The only reason I do not own one is because of their smaller width at the nut. When I contacted Guild USA and asked the company if it could consider making such guitars with wider necks, it did not express any interest. I think this is regrettable because Martin did pick up on this players' need 2 our 3 years ago and finally started building more guitars with a wider neck.
Interesting to hear the differences and the best applications for each.
When you play an acoustic guitar outdoors, the bottom can really seem to dissipate. You get a real "stringy" sound.
Bring it to room, being IN to a space, even if you play near a wall, you hear the whole potential of the guitar. The strings, wood and the air.
That's kind of the contrast I'm hearing here.
Thank you, I have waited long for this comparison. The sound of a D-28 is well known, so it is great to hear how another guitar relates to it. The D-55 is on my list. I am actually looking for a step up for my 40 year old K.Yairi dreadnaught (spruce/laminated mahogany) which I mainly use for fingerstyle in open D tuning. For this purpose, I am looking for a boomy sound with great sustain and overtones. It looks like the D-55 would fit. Sometimes you see people play this guitar fingerstyle on RUclips.
I think the Martin sounds good but compared to the D55 a little thin , the D55 has a fuller sound
Big difference. Thank you, this answered my question. I would definitely choose the big full sounding Guild. One more step.. I'd like to hear the Guild compared to a Gibson dreadnaught.
They're really close to my ear..I love Martin but the Guild has the boominess I love.. If I strolled in with enough in my bank acount and had to choose.. I would be Team Guild today.
I think they said the Martin was non scalloped. I’ve a Martin D custom Adirondack with Indian rosewood and it’s non scalloped. It’s lovely but my D-28 sitka with Indian rosewood is scalloped and it’s definitely got more boom on the lows
@@chrismccannIRL It would have made more sense for them to use an HD-28 for this video
@@davefan16 yeah exactly. They should’ve compared it to the scalloped version to rule out that one difference. It’s a big enough difference to be honest
@@chrismccannIRL I owned a D28 for a few months and ended up selling it towards an HD. The difference is night and day.
@@davefan16 yeah I can sort of understand that. Oddly though if you are more into fingerstyle or a lighter strummer the non scalloped works slightly better. I’m lucky you have both but the scalloped D28 definitely gives more punch
What D55 should compare with is D41
Just curious - does each guitar have the same string composition type? For example, do they both have 92/8's or 80/20's?
D-55 best sound,
I Love this Guitar
Commenting on these two specific guitars, I found myself gravitating toward the D-28. I liked the punch (standard shifted bracing) and tone. It was very clear that Quinton said it had more qualities that you would need to appreciate in person. The D-55 had more of a scooped midrange. I'd love to try a D-55 and see how that feels and sounds. Of course, I'd want both if I could afford them.
They both sound great. A question for Quinton - how much difference does the 1/16 inch in nut width make?
Guild! Yay!
No articulation I’m the D55, the big boom overrides the mids and trebles , the d28 was so balanced and allowed every string to shine , Martin wins by a country mile so sweet and punchy sounding , be interesting to hear an HD 35 v the D55 , be closer In sound to each other I think
Both wonderful. I think the Guild sounds full and rich and would accompany a singer really well. The focused Martin tone would probably mix with other instruments better. For looks, the Martin has a nice, golden soundboard but overall the Guild just looks so classy.
I like guild
There's a pretty significant price difference between Martin D28 and the Guild D55. However, the Gibson Hummingbird is more closely priced to the Guild. I would love to hear that comparison. :)
I hate people who think "dreadnought. Strum." Literally every great fingerpicker I can think of plays a Dreadnought.
Tommy Emmanuel OM
Shore is beating er ain't he
I'd like to know how old are the strings on each. That could definitely effect the tone when doing a comparison. 🎶🎶😎
Should be relatively the same cause otherwise a comparison would not make that much sense. I'd say.
Excellent point... Strings, here, could make a major diff.
Compared to the Guild the Martin sounds ordinary... The Guild vibrates your whole body...!
If you wanna hear how good d55, just listen symphaty by goo goo dolls. Killer sound !!!
For me, EMC2's comment: "that warm yet articulate mellow Martin tone that wins me over every time", SIMPLY NAILS IT! Another excellent demo.
Both guitars are fantastic. Once of each, please...
If you carefully listen taking a bit of focus off the boom from the Guild, you will see that the Martin offers more clarity. The bass on the Guild, while impressive does obscure everything else when compared to the martin's.
It seems every time I hear comparisons of higher end rosewood and spruce Dreds / jumbos, blindfolded or not, I pick the D55. They are so beautiful to listen to see and play. I love Martins, Gibsons, and most Taylors too, but It’s Guild for me. Just one guy’s opinion. I know sound and appearance are completely subjective.
They're all just different flavors when you get up to this level.
It how you approach the guitar in the srumming
Is it pretty crappy of RUclips to put a Sweetwater add before your video - LOL?
Big Guild guitar fan. Sadly D-55 DOES NOT have 1 3/4 nut option. Went with 2008 Martin D-28 Marquis (1 3/4" nut & 2 5/16' at the saddle). I also prefer the Marquis' Adirondack top.
Both are great guitars but I'll take the D-28 anyday and twice on Sundays ... Nothing beats a Martin IMO.
Sounds non-biased!
If you have the extra time and skills or know someone who does' for $350.00 Yamaha FG-330.... enlarge the sound hole 3.00mm shy of the first Rosette and put on a set of EB 12's-
aluminum bronze strings.... I have both guitars shown in the video.... never would have thought a $350.00 guitar with laminated back and sides/spruce top and about 30 minutes of work would sound better than a Martin.
Much louder/better string to string definition on the highs and especially on the lows.
I've always liked the looks of the Guild F-55 or D-55 but the D-28 sounds more broken-in and the D-55 a little more brittle in IMHO. Also, the D-28 has a 1 3/4 " nut and the D-55 a 1 11/16 inch nut width. 1 3/4" is considered standard today on higher-end guitars.
Also the GUILD has a more Radiused Fretboard than the MARTIN, 12in v 16in.🙂🙂🙂
I have A 1980 D-28 and it's the only martin guitar I've ever had I love ,The Guild kills this martin But I choose Taylor over any of of them ,That's why I have seven Taylor guitars ,I got rid of all my martins except that 1980 D-28.
D28 for me, D55 is the most J200 sounding guitar I’ve heard. Interesting show
Hm, to me the J200 is the most J200 sounding guitar I've heard but if you mean D Guitars or smaller, ok 😊
@@ClaptonDennis Absolutely, if you need that sound in a more compact size
They both sound gorgeous, but I will always be a Martin fan all the way!
And had your mind made up already?
D55 has that 12 strings’ ring on it plus the low boomy end…so so different from Martin…I got 4 Martins y 3 guilds a backpacker y a Martin solid koa concert siyukulele…y all solid mahogany tenor size
I think guild sounds brighter. Can you do hd28 vs d55? And maybe d40 vs d18
I’d like to hear the Songwriter and Advanced Jumbo included in this review.
The D55 is so underrated. I think this maybe my next acoustic guitar.
guild all the way. beefiest bass due to the long neck
Funny they mentioned HD28 vs D55. Those are the two I have and they really are different. I
Ja Es. Do you have an overall preference?
@@maxwellfan55 It varies. The HD28 is 30 years old and has attained that mellow, mature tone. I like it for when I am trying to learn Joe Pass stuff, for instance. The D55 is only two years old. It seemed to me to be similar to a Collings in the sense that it has a distinct treble to its high strings, that pairs well with the deep bass. I like it for rhythm stuff and solo acoustic stuff like Tommy Emmanual (at least his easier songs).
@@jaes7500 Thanks brother.
D55 was my first great guitar. A cannon.
Martin d28 for me. Both great guitars
D55
I got Martin fr backpacker ukulele GPC y Dread sizes y 2 Guilds …y solid wood piano y Korg etc classical guitars harmonicas electric too…iam kinda picky y iam kinda baritone tenor ish btw lol
I sing mainly y these dreads are a delight but my genre is varied (a semi baritone but can do medium high ranges y I ❤️ my tone duh )
Love both but for my money and style Martin wins.
I think the guild has a longer scale length.
Did that Guild just run over the D-28?
Guild: Strumming winner. Country, Front mic singer. Martin: Bluegrass, loud, clear single notes. Lead guitar.
The one guitar that I regret selling is my Guild D-55.
A Richie Havens guitar guild 55 RIP
Guild D55 soa mais brilhante como um banjo, mais percussivo, o Martin tem mais midrange, som tradicional do bluegrass , um pouco mais de corpo, Eu fico com os dois, maravilhosos . Se pudesse os teria sem pestanejar.
Hey! I own both!
Lucky you!
no u dont!!!
How do they compare in terms of playability?
They are both great to play. They are different. I bought the Martin last week.
The D-55 is full and bold, balance, articulate a great finger picker. The Martin is down a dirty and gives me that Martin muddied sound that we love.
@@barrybernau467 is it true the guild has a skinny neck and narrow nut width?? thats what I dont like about it...and yes Martin just has that classic sound
Both are as good as eachother, just different.
The Martin has way more presence. Then again, listening to a comparison like this on a computer is hardly a good test...
28 me
This guy bangs the crap out of a guitar. One way to test it I suppose. I think the Martin handles the hard strum better but I think the Guild is a sweeter sound.
I'd take my D28 any day of the week!
I’m glad that they make high end versions of the “lower end” guitars like the authentic series. I’m not really a fan of super ornate guitars. I’d prefer a beautifully aged toned 18 any day. No crazy inlays. Just wood and strings.
That's the one thing I don't like about the D55 and a lot of Guilds and Gibsons in general. People spend so much time arguing over which type of fretboard wood is the best and then they go out and play on a guitar that's 60% plastic inlay.
I liked the sound of the Guild better.
D55 sounds brash compared to the D28. More focus on the Martin
The D-55 sounds brassy to me. The D-28 sounds much deeper if that makes sense. I agree that the D-55 sounds close to a J-200.
The D-28 sounds much deeper, but the D-55 sounds like a Jumbo? Ok, maybe I get the word 'deep' wrong.
Beside 55 , 28 shows its slim sides
Martin.
Martin by a country mile, banjo killer!
You guys talk to much. Play the guitars lets us make our own conclusions
No belts next time!
Hoping no one noticed that :)
Uuu🥸
Of course, the D28 is better
Of course you had your mind made up in advance?
I'd say the Martin D-28 sounds better. Clearly.
Clearly being the operative
Martin is better
No comparison. D28
